That is, efface what has come from me, as a person dragging his skirt effaces the traces on the sand or dust he walks over.

a man has not kept alive his companion's love with anything like dragging his skirt over his faults—مَا ٱسْتَبْقَى رَجُلٌ وُدَّ صَاحِبِهِ بِمِثْلِ مَا سَحَبَ الذَّيْلَ عَلَى مَعَايِبِهِ

When the yokes (shall be) round their necks, and the chains; they shall be dragged along-

54:48

يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ

The Day they will be dragged through the Fire on their faces, (they will hear:) "Taste ye the touch of Hell!"

, (S, A, Msb, K,) aor. سَحَبَ , (Msb, K,) inf. n. سَحْبٌ , (Msb, TA,) He dragged it, or drew it along, (S, A, Msb, K,) namely, his ذَيْل [or skirt], (S,) or a thing, such as a garment &c., (TA,) upon the ground. (Msb, K, TA.) One says of a woman, تَسْحَبُ ذَيْلَهَا [She drags, or draws along, her skirt upon the ground]. (TA.) And سَحَبَتِ الرِيحُ التُّرَابَ [The wind drew along the dust upon the ground]. (TA.) [Hence,] سَحَبَتِ الرِّيَاحُ أَذْيَالَهَا [The winds dragged their skirts upon the ground; i. e., blew so as to efface the traces upon the ground]. (A: in the TA, الرِّيحُ .) And مَا ٱسْتَبْقَى رَجُلٌ وُدَّ صَاحِبِهِ بِمِثْلِ مَا سَحَبَ الذَّيْلَ عَلَى مَعَايِبِهِ [A man has not preserved, or kept alive, the love, or affection, of his companion with anything that is in its effect like his dragging the skirt over his vices, or faults]. (A, TA.) [Hence like wise, as will be shown by what next follows,] سَحَبَ , aor. سَحَبَ , (K, TA,) inf. n. as above, (S, TA,) means also He ate and drank vehemently. (S, K, TA.)

In the S and K it is termed a plural of سَحَابَةٌ, as also سُحُبٌ and سَحَائِبُ; but according to As it is [correctly] a collective noun, used alike as masculine and feminine, singular and plural.

سَحَابَةٌ is its ism waḥda; سُحُبٌ is the plural of سَحَابٌ or of سَحَابَةٌ, and may be the plural of either of these; سَحَائِبُ is the plural of سَحَابَةٌ without restriction, and of سَحَابٌ when used as feminine.

It means clouds [or a collection of clouds], and clouds from which the rain comes: so called because they are drawn along in the air; or because they draw one another along; or because the winds draw them along; or because they draw along their fringes. See art. حبو.

It is He Who doth show you the lightning, by way both of fear and of hope: It is He Who doth raise up the clouds, heavy with (fertilising) rain!

27:88

وَتَرَى ٱلْجِبَالَ تَحْسَبُهَا جَامِدَةً وَهِىَ تَمُرُّ مَرَّ ٱلسَّحَابِ ۚ صُنْعَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَتْقَنَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَفْعَلُونَ

Thou seest the mountains and thinkest them firmly fixed: but they shall pass away as the clouds pass away: (such is) the artistry of Allah, who disposes of all things in perfect order: for he is well acquainted with all that ye do.

30:48

ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى يُرْسِلُ ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ فَتُثِيرُ سَحَابًا فَيَبْسُطُهُۥ فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ يَشَآءُ وَيَجْعَلُهُۥ كِسَفًا فَتَرَى ٱلْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَـٰلِهِۦ ۖ فَإِذَآ أَصَابَ بِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِۦٓ إِذَا هُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

It is Allah Who sends the Winds, and they raise the Clouds: then does He spread them in the sky as He wills, and break them into fragments, until thou seest rain-drops issue from the midst thereof: then when He has made them reach such of his servants as He wills behold, they do rejoice!-

35:9

وَٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَرْسَلَ ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ فَتُثِيرُ سَحَابًا فَسُقْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ بَلَدٍ مَّيِّتٍ فَأَحْيَيْنَا بِهِ ٱلْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلنُّشُورُ

It is Allah Who sends forth the Winds, so that they raise up the Clouds, and We drive them to a land that is dead, and revive the earth therewith after its death: even so (will be) the Resurrection!

52:44

وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ كِسْفًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ سَاقِطًا يَقُولُوا۟ سَحَابٌ مَّرْكُومٌ

Were they to see a piece of the sky falling (on them), they would (only) say: "Clouds gathered in heaps!"
