6 senses · 4 main

Core sense — imprisoned; the record of the deeds of the wicked; anything hard; lastinggenerated

1

See سِجْنٌ.

1.1

In the Qur'ān 83:7: a certain place in which is the record [of the deeds] of the wicked; or, as I 'Ab says, in which are their registers.

AO says it is of the measure فِعِّيلٌ from السِّجْنُ, like الفِسِّيقُ from الفِسْقُ.

Or a certain valley in Hell; or a certain stone, [or rock,] beneath, or in, the seventh earth. [These explanations are given by those who hold that مَا سِجِّينٌ in the next verse stands for مَا كِتَابُ سِجِّينٍ.]

Or it there means a register comprising the deeds of the wicked among the jinn, or genii, and mankind, or of the devils and the unbelievers.

Or ما سجّين in the next verse stands for ما كتاب سجّين, and the meaning is the place beneath the seventh earth, the abode of Iblees and his forces.

IAth says it occurs in a tradition with the article ال; without that article it is a proper name for the fire [of Hell], and hence its mention in the Qur'ān 83:7. [See also سِجِّيلٌ.]

2

Also anything hard; and hard or severe, said of a beating.

2.1

Also continuing, lasting, or everlasting; the same as دَائِمٌ, as also سِجِّيلٌ; so according to El-Muärrij. [See, again, سِجِّيلٌ.]

3[He did that openly, or publicly]عَمِلَ ذٰلِكَ سِجِّينًا

Same in meaning as عَلَانِيَة.

4

Also palm-trees such as are termed سِلْتِين, in the dialect of the people of El-Bahreyn; [apparently meaning that the latter word belongs to that dialect, for it is said that] the Arabs [apparently the Arabs in general] say سِجِّين in place of سِلْتِين, which is not Arabic.

The palm-trees so termed are those that have trenches dug at their feet to conduct the water to them when it has not reached them; see also art. سلتن.
