The verb has muḍāriʿ سَتُرَ and سَتِرَ, and maṣdar سَتْرٌ and سَتَرٌ, with this same meaning: he, or it, veiled, concealed, or hid a thing; covered it.

It means the same, or has an intensive sense, or denotes frequency or repetition of the act, or its application to many objects.

According to Golius, on the authority of the KL: “sub velo, obtenso eo [sic], ne quis vir intueretur eam, custodivit puellam: et clam asservavit habuitque eam;” but in the KL I find nothing of the kind except تَسْتِيرٌ, explained by the words در پرده داشتن (to have or hold within a curtain).

Literally, such a one does not protect himself from the displeasure of God by piety.

The same is expressed by سِتَارَةٌ, سِتَارٌ, سَتَرَةٌ, إِسْتَارٌ, إِسْتَارَةٌ (which last is known to occur in only one instance, in a tradition) and مِسْتَرٌ. The first two of these words also mean anything by which one is protected, or sheltered; and for this word see also below.

The plural of سِتْرٌ is سُتُورٌ and أَسْتَارٌ (this last a plural of paucity) and سُتُرٌ, which is also a plural of سِتَارٌ, as كُتُبٌ is of كِتَابٌ; and the plural of سِتَارَةٌ is سَتَائِرُ.

God made known, or may God make known, his vices, or faults—هَتَكَ ٱللّٰهُ سِتْرَهُ

Literally, God rent open, or may God rend open, his veil, or covering; or God disgraced him, or exposed him to disgrace, or may God disgrace him.

This word, like the headword, is applied to a man, while سَتِيرَةٌ, سَتِيرٌ and سَتِرَةٌ are applied to a girl or woman. This is the proper meaning.

In the Kur 17:47; the expression implies the thickness of the veil.
