زاغ, is a variant of the same dialect.

In Qur'ān 3:5, زَيْغٌ means a doubting, and a declining from the truth.

He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord, and searching for its hidden meanings, but no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

Or, as some say, زَاغَتِ الأَبْصَارُ means the eyes turned aside from their places, as with a man in fear.

Behold! they came on you from above you and from below you, and behold, the eyes became dim and the hearts gaped up to the throats, and ye imagined various (vain) thoughts about Allah!

38:63
أَتَّخَذْنَـٰهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا أَمْ زَاغَتْ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْأَبْصَـٰرُ

"Did we treat them (as such) in ridicule, or have (our) eyes failed to perceive them?"

53:17
مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ

(His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong!

(Msb, TA. *) In the Kur iii. 5, (O,) زَيْغٌ means A doubting, and a declining, or deviating, from the truth. (O, K.) 4.1O our Lord, do not make us [or our hearts] decline from the right way and course; do not make us err, or go astrayرَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا

Muḍāriʿ عَنِ الطَّرِيقِ.

He made him decline, or turn aside, from the way.

Hence in Qur'ān 3:6, according to the usual reading.

"Our Lord!" (they say), "Let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us, but grant us mercy from Thine own Presence; for Thou art the Grantor of bounties without measure.

61:5
وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِۦ يَـٰقَوْمِ لِمَ تُؤْذُونَنِى وَقَد تَّعْلَمُونَ أَنِّى رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيْكُمْ ۖ فَلَمَّا زَاغُوٓا۟ أَزَاغَ ٱللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِى ٱلْقَوْمَ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

And remember, Moses said to his people: "O my people! why do ye vex and insult me, though ye know that I am the messenger of Allah (sent) to you?" Then when they went wrong, Allah let their hearts go wrong. For Allah guides not those who are rebellious transgressors.

[The rook;] a small غُرَاب [or bird of the crow kind], inclining to white, that does not eat carrion, and is allowed to be eaten; now called in Egypt the غُرَاب نُوحِىّ [or Noachian crow].

Or a غُرَاب like the pigeon, black, with a dusty colour in its head; or, as some say, inclining to white; and that does not eat carrion. So in the article زوغ.

Or a small black غُرَاب that is eaten, also called حَذَفٌ, of which the ism waḥda is formed with ة. ISh, in the article حذف.

[These descriptions correctly apply to different varieties of the rook, some of which are distinguished by more or less whiteness in the head and other parts. Today the word is by some, perhaps generally, wrongly applied to the carrion-crow.]

Az says: “I know not whether it is Arabic or arabicized.” See also the article زوغ.

The truth is that it is a Persian word, [زَاغْ] arabicized; originally applied to crows, whether small or large, but when arabicized applied specially to one species of them.
