maṣdarاِزْوِلَالٌ زَوَالٌ زُوُولٌ زِيَالٌmuḍāriʿيَزُولُ يَقِيلُ يَدُومُ

Core sense — it went away, it ceased to be; the sun declined from the meridian; it movedgenerated

1.1it went away, it ceased to beاِزْوَلَّ

and according to the K also يَزَالُ, which is rare, on the authority of Aboo-'Alee; but this is the muḍāriʿ of زَالَ, like خَافَ, which has a different meaning from the former verb. (which in all its senses except one mentioned below may apparently be pronounced also زُؤُولٌ, like حُؤُولٌ for حُوُولٌ, plural of حَوْلٌ) and زَوِيلٌ and زَوْلٌ, the last with fet-h according to a rule of the K, though in some copies زُولٌ, with damm, and زَوَلَانٌ.

The verb means: it went away; it passed away; it departed; it shifted; it became remote, or absent; it ceased to be, or came to nought.

or according to the O اِزْوَأَلَّ, like اِطْمَأَنَّ. See also form 7.

[The world, or worldly enjoyment or good, is quick in passing away, or coming to nought]الدُّنْيَا وَشِيكَةُ الزَّوَالِ

And زال زَوَالُهُ and زَوَالُهَا: see زَوَالٌ; and for the former see also زَوِيلٌ.

And زال زَوِيلُهُ and زَوِيلُهَا: see زَوِيلٌ.

the thing went away, or ceased, from its place; it left its placeزال الشَّىْءُ عَنْ مَكَانِهِ

Also مَوْضِعِهِ and the rest as above.

[I went away from my place]زُلْتُ عَنْ مَكَانِى

Maṣdars زَوَالٌ and زُوُولٌ.

it went away, or ceased, from him; it left himزال عَنْهُ
they turned away from their place; or they went back and fled from itزَالُوا عَنْ مَكَانِهِمْ
[he turned, or swerved, from the opinion, or judgment]زال عَنِ الرَّأْىِ

Said of any affection of the mind or body.

.

he, or it, quitted his, or its, placeزال

. It also means: he removed from one town, or country, to another.

the horses removed from their place with their ridersزالت الخَيْلُ بِرُكْبَانِهَا

. Said to be figurative, but I see no reason why.

1.1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredthe sun declined from the meridianزالت الشَّمْسُ

without ء, as Th says, and زِيَالٌ and زَوَلَانٌ.

Sometimes it means the sun set: see form 1 in art. دلك.

1.1.2figurative · مجازthe day became advanced, the sun being somewhat highزال النَّهَارُ

But not with زُوُولٌ for a maṣdar in the senses explained here.

and apparently زِيَالٌ and زَوَلَانٌ.

Synonym اِرْتَفَعَ; or, as some say, it went away, or departed.

the sun became high, and the shade contracted, decreased, or went away, at middayزال الظِّلُّ

Also زال زَائِلُ الظِّلِّ.

1.1.3their journeying ceased for a whileزال ظعنهم

Thus in the TK (Boolák edition); that is, ظَعْنُهُمْ, thus in the K, and thus only, the verb being indicated by a preceding phrase; in the TA زالت ظعنهم, which is an evident mistranscription.

Maṣdar زَيْلُولَةٌ, like قَيْلُولَةٌ (a maṣdar of قَالَ), but more properly compared to دَيْمُومَةٌ, a maṣdar of دَامَ.

Explained as meaning اِئْتَوَوْا مَكَانَهُمْ ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُمْ: they stayed in their place; then an opinion occurred to them different from their former opinion, so that it turned them away from it and induced them to move.

In the K is added عَنْهُ, but this should be omitted; the passage is taken from the M, in which عَنْهُ refers to Lh as the authority.

1.1.4it moved; it was, or became, in motion, commotion, or agitationزال

Having for its maṣdar, apparently, زَوَالٌ and زَوِيلٌ and زَوْلٌ (see the first of these below); synonym تَحَرَّكَ.

[I saw a bodily form or figure: then it moved]رَأَيْتُ شَبَحًا ثُمَّ زَالَ
he moves about much among people, and does not stay stillهُوَ يَزُولُ فِىالنَّاسِ
1.1.5a figure seen from a distance rose to his viewزَائِلَةٌ زَالَتْ لَهُ

That is, شَخَصَ لَهُ شَخْصٌ.

1.1.6the mirage raised him, or it, and made him, or it, apparentزال بِهِ السَّرَابُ

The word for raised, or elevated, is رَفَعَ.

1.2

مَا زَالَ يَفْعَلُ كَذَا and the like: see art. زيل.

1.3he made a show of quickness of intellect, cleverness, skill, or intelligence; or did so without having itزال

synonym تَظَرَّفَ. See also form 5.

1.4

As a transitive verb it belongs to art. زيل, and apparently to the present article also. See form 4.

One says زال زَوَالَهُ, or زال ٱللّٰهُ زَوَلَهُ, and زال زَوَالَهَا: see زَوَالٌ.

And زِيلَ زَوِيلُهُ and زَوِيلُهَا and زَوَالُهُ: see زَوِيلٌ; and for the first, see also زَوَالٌ.

1.4.1he separated himself from himزالهُ

Also زايلهُ, which belongs exclusively to art. زيل.

3.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe strove to catch the animals of the chase; he hunted themزاول الصَّيْدَ

Maṣdar مُزَاوَلَةٌ and زِوَالٌ.

Same as عَالَجَهُ: he laboured, exerted himself, strove, struggled, or contended with him, or it, to prevail, to gain the mastery or possession, or to effect an object. According to the KL and PS and some other dictionaries it also means he treated him medically, which is another meaning of عالجه, but I have not found any example of that meaning.

Also حَاوَلَهُ: he sought to obtain it, or to effect it, by skilful management; and طَالَبَهُ: he made a demand on him, or prosecuted a claim upon him.

According to the TA it seems to be used properly of real things, and figuratively of ideal things.

See طَرَدَ.

Core sense — a going away, a ceasing to be; motion, commotion, agitationgenerated

1

This word, and زَوِيلٌ and زَوْلٌ, are maṣdars of زَالَ.

1.1may his motion cease; may he continue where he is, or continue in lifeزَالَ زَوَالُهُ
may God cause his motion to cease; may He put an end to his lifeزَالَ زَوَالَهُ
may God cause his motion to ceaseزَالَ ٱللّٰهُ زَوَالَهُ

All of these signify motion, commotion, or agitation.

So in art. زيل.

may God cause his motion to ceaseأَزَالَ ٱللّٰهُ زَوَالَهُ

So in art. زيل.

The phrases invoking God are imprecations of destruction, or death, and of trial or affliction upon the person spoken of, as ISk explains them; they are like the saying أَسْكَتَ ٱللّٰهُ نَامَّتَهُ.

El-Aashà says: [apparently meaning: This is the day-time; an opinion has arisen in her mind such as to turn her from her former opinion and induce her to stay away, out of her anxiety: what will be her case in the night? may it, her phantom, be absent, as she herself is absent]

shāhid
هٰذَا النَّهَارُ بَدَا لَهَا مِنْ هَمِّهَامَا بَالُهَا بِاللَّيْلِ زَالَ زَوَالَهَا

بَدَآءٌ, I suppose, is understood after بَدَا لَهَا, as it is after بَدَا لَهُمْ in the Kur 12:35.

The meaning is said to be زَالَ الخَيَالُ زَوَالَهَا.

IAar says that he disliked the phantom only because it roused his desire; or زَالَ may here be synonymous with أَزَالَ, so that the meaning may be أَزَالَ ٱللّٰهُ زَوَالَهَا: may God make her motion cease.

This is supported by the reading of AA, زَوَالُهَا, in the nominative, that is زَالَ زَوَالُهَا: may her motion cease; which makes this an instance of the license termed الإِقْوَآء. He says this is an old proverbial phrase of the Arabs, and El-Aashà used it as he heard it. Others than AA read زَوَالَهَا in the accusative, without إِقْوَآء, taking the meaning to be: may her phantom be absent from us in the night as she herself is absent in the day-time.

his motion ceased; or, may his motion ceaseزِيلَ

Or, according to Z, he became fixed, or motionless, from fear; or, may he become so. See art. زيل. Another rendering of this phrase is given in the next entry.

commotion, disquiet of mind, and loud weeping overcame himأَخَذَهُ الزَّوِيلُ وَالعَوِيلُ

(S, Msb, K) and زَوِيلٌ and زَوْلٌ (K) are inf. ns. of زَالَ [q. v.]. (S, Msb, K.) And all signify Motion, commotion, or agitation. (TA in explanation of the first and last, and K in explanation of the second.) [Hence,] زَالَ زَوَالُهُ , or زَالَ زَوَالَهُ , (accord. to different copies of the K,) or زَالَ ٱللّٰهُ زَوَالَهُ , (S in art. زيل , and TA,) and أَزَالَ ٱللّٰهُ زَوَالَهُ , (S in art. زيل , and K and TA,) are imprecations of destruction, or perdition, or death, (S, K,) and trial, or affliction, upon him to whom they relate: (S:) or such are the [second and] third and fourth of these phrases: but the first is a prayer for one's continuance where he is, [or his continuance in life; lit.] meaning May his motion cease; [and hence, may he continue where he is, or continue in life:] and, as expl. by ISk, the [second and] third and fourth [lit.] signify May [He i. e.] God cause his motion to cease; [and hence, may He, or God, put an end to his life;] these phrases being similar to the saying أَسْكَتَ ٱللّٰهُ نَامَّتَهُ . (TA.) [Thus all four have virtually the same lit. signification. And the first has also another meaning; as will be seen below.] El-Aashà says, 1 (S, TA,) [app. meaning This is the day-time: an opinion has arisen in her mind such as to turn her from her former opinion and induce her to absent herself, ( بَدَآءٌ , I suppose, being understood after بَدَا لَهَا , like as it is after بَدَا لَهُمْ in the Kur xii. 35,) in consequence of her anxiety: what will be her case in the night? may it (her phantom) be absent, like as she is absent: for] the meaning is said to be, زَالَ الخَيَالُ زَوَالَهَا : IAar says, he disliked the phantom only because it roused his desire: or [ زَالَ may be here syn. with أَزَالَ , so that] the meaning may be أَزَالَ ٱللّٰهُ زَوَالَهَا [may God make her motion to cease]; and this is corroborated by the reading of AA, زَوَالُهَا , in the nom. case, [i. e. زَالَ زَوَالُهَا may her motion cease;] which makes this an instance of [the license termed] الإِقْوَآء : this, he says, is an old proverbial phrase of the Arabs, and El-Aashà has used it as he heard it: others than AA read [ زَوَالَهَا ,] in the accus. case, without إِقْوَآء , holding the meaning to be, may her phantom be absent from us in the night like as she herself is absent in the day-time. (TA.) زِيلَ , likewise, means His motion ceased, or may his motion cease: or, accord. to Z, he became fixed, or motionless, from fear; or may he become so. (TA in art. زيل .) [See also another rendering of this phrase in the next paragraph.] One says also, أَخَذَهُ الزَّوِيلُ وَالعَوِيلُ Commotion, or agitation, (K, TA,) and disquietude of mind, (TA,) and wailing, or raising of the voice in weeping, overcame him. (K, TA.) هٰذَا النَّهَارُ بَدَا لَهَا مِنْ هَمِّهَا | مَا بَالُهَا بِاللَّيْلِ زَالَ زَوَالَهَا See also the next paragraph, in three places.
