(S, Msb.) He was furnished, or he furnished himself, with provisions for travelling or for a fixed residence; he took, or prepared, provisions for himself.

Golius makes it transitive by means of بِ, on the authority of the KL, in which the only explanation, as that of the maṣdar, is توشه برگرفتن.

And he chose a thing as زَاد [or provision] for himself.

ٱلْحَجُّ أَشْهُرٌ مَّعْلُومَـٰتٌ ۚ فَمَن فَرَضَ فِيهِنَّ ٱلْحَجَّ فَلَا رَفَثَ وَلَا فُسُوقَ وَلَا جِدَالَ فِى ٱلْحَجِّ ۗ وَمَا تَفْعَلُوا۟ مِنْ خَيْرٍ يَعْلَمْهُ ٱللَّهُ ۗ وَتَزَوَّدُوا۟ فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ ٱلزَّادِ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ۚ وَٱتَّقُونِ يَـٰٓأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

For Hajj are the months well known. If any one undertakes that duty therein, Let there be no obscenity, nor wickedness, nor wrangling in the Hajj. And whatever good ye do, (be sure) Allah knoweth it. And take a provision (With you) for the journey, but the best of provisions is right conduct. So fear Me, o ye that are wise.

Provisions, or a stock of provisions, for travelling (S, L, Msb, TA) and for a fixed residence: (L, TA:) pl. أَزْوَادٌ (L, Msb) and أَزْوِدَةٌ ; the latter anomalous. (L.) Plural مَزَائِدُ [regularly مَزَاوِدُ; or the middle radical is ى, and so the regular plural is مَزَايِدُ]; and sometimes they said مَزَادٌ [a collective generic noun], without ة.

According to some it is of the measure مَفْعَلَةٌ [originally مَزْوَدَةٌ], from الزَّادُ, because one furnishes himself with water in it for travelling-provision, and so it is mentioned in this article; but this is a mistake. See the article زيد.
