Form 1زَنَى1 sense
Core sense — he committed fornication or adulterygenerated
[often written زِنًا] and زِنَآءٌ. The latter is also a maṣdar of form 3, but some say it is a dialectal variant of the former; the former belongs to the dialect of the people of El-Hijáz, the latter to that of Benoo-Temeem, or of the people of Nejd.
El-Munáwee gives this meaning; but according to him [it seems to be properly a dialectal variant of زَنَأَ in the sense of he mounted, for he says that,] in the proper speech of the Arabs الزِّنَا means mounting upon a thing, while in the language of the law it means the act just mentioned.
It is [thus] synonymous with فَجَرَ; and of a woman one says likewise [زَنَتْ].
Maṣdar تَزْنِيَةٌ.
Maṣdar مُزَانَاةٌ and زِنَآءٌ.
Maṣdar مُزَانَاةٌ and زِنَآءٌ, meaning تُبَاغِى [that is, she commits fornication or adultery, or she prostitutes herself].
A proverb, applied to one who does not stay in a single state, neither in good nor in evil. Meyd: or to one who refrains from doing good and then goes to excess in it, or refrains from evil and then goes to excess in that, not keeping to one way. [See also زَنْيَةٌ.]
Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, nor commit fornication; - and any that does this (not only) meets punishment.
Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
