This is the maṣdar of the verb. [See زَنَمَةٌ.]

Of the ear of a man, this is apparently the antitragus, and also a small prominence of the antihelix immediately above the antitragus.

This last word is an evident miscopying for وَتِدَة, i.e. the tragus; so in all the copies I have seen.

The word here apparently means sheep as well as goat, though it is said that the sheep has no زَنَمَة, that belonging only to the goat — apparently because it is uncommon in sheep.

Also, and مُزَنَّمٌ: one adopted among a people to whom he does not belong — so Fr, explaining the first word as used in the Qur'ān 68:13.

Some add: not being needed; as though he were a زَنَمَة among them.

Mbr: the same as دَعِىٌّ [meaning likewise one who is adopted among a people or by a person, though F understood it in some other sense], joined with them or him; and I'Ab explained the first word so as used in the same verse.

But Az says that the second word has only the meaning given above under زَنِمٌ, as an adjective applied to a camel.

The first word also means base, ignoble, or mean; known by his baseness or his evil character, as the شَاة [i.e. sheep or goat] is known by its زَنَمَة. It is added that this is because the cutting of the ear is a mark; but by its زنمة is meant its wattle, for the cutting of the ear of the camel is a mark of generous race. 'Ikrimeh explained it so as used in the same verse.
