He ran and went along quickly, leaning on one side and raising his other side, as though he were bearing on one leg, not with the firmness of one who bears on both his legs.

Said of a horse or similar beast, or of a wild ass.

— he means أَزْمَلَا, but drops the ء, as is done in وَيْلُمِّهِ [for وَيْلٌ لِأُمِّهِ].

اَزاميل is the plural of أَزْمَلٌ, with ى added to give fulness to the sound of the vowel before it.

A shoemaker's knife (S, K, TA) with which he cuts the leather. (TA.) [In the TA, in art. ذرب , it is expl. as meaning A shoemaker's إِشْفَى with which he sews: but this I have not found elsewhere.] Also An iron (K, TA) like the new moon [in shape], (TA,) that is put at the end of a spear, for the purpose of catching wild oxen. (K, * TA.) And The [implement called] مِطْرَقَة [q. v.]. (K.) Applied to a man, (K, TA,) A great, or vehement, eater; likened to the [shoemaker's] knife: (TA:) or strong: and also weak; (K, TA;) low, mean, or contemptible: (TA: [like زُمَّلٌ :]) thus having two contr. significations. The people of Baghdád apply it to a green [jar such as is called] جَرَّة or خَابِيَة, in the middle of which is a hole where a tube of silver or lead is fixed, from which one drinks.

It is so called because it is wrapped with a piece of cloth of coarse flax, or something else, with straw between that and the jar.

It is kept in their houses in the summer days: the water is cooled in the night by means of the [porous earthen bottles called] بَرَّادَات, then it is poured into this مزمّلة and stays cool in it.
