Some say that زُمْرَةٌ is from زَمْرٌ [originally a maṣdar, and hence] meaning “sound”, because a company of men is never without sound; others, that it means a company of few persons, from شَاةٌ زَمِرَةٌ. The first derivation is the proper one, and is confirmed by what is said in the B.

So in a tradition, in which it is said نَهَى عَنْ كَسْبِ الزَّمَّارَةِ He prohibited the gain of the fornicatress. She is so called because she publishes her business.

Some say that the correct word here is رَمَّازَة, because such a woman makes signs with her lips, her eyes and her eyebrows. Az says that he holds the first to be right, and Abu-l-'Abbás Ahmad says that the second is wrong and that the first means a beautiful prostitute. Az adds that the tradition may mean as above, or that he prohibited the gain of the female singer, as AHát relates on the authority of As.

A musical reed, or pipe; called in Persian نَاىْ [now generally meaning a flute].

Also زَمَّارَةٌ, which many pronounce زُمَّارَة, as it is generally pronounced in Egypt, and which is applied to a double reed-pipe, figured and described in my work on the Modern Egyptians.

And مَزْمُورٌ and مَزْمُورٌ, the last of these like مَغْلُوقٌ and مَغْرُودٌ.

The plural of the first, and of the last two, is مَزَامِيرُ.

It is related in a tradition that Mohammad, on hearing Aboo-Moosà El-Ash'aree reciting, said to him, لَقَدْ أُعْطِيتَ مِزْمَارًا مِنْ مَزَامِيرِ آلِ دَاوُودَ [You have been gifted with a pipe like that of David himself], likening the sweetness of his voice and melody to the sound of the مِزْمَار, as though he had musical pipes in his throat.

Or مزاميرآل داوود is here the same as مَزْمُورَات دَاوُود.

مَزَامِيرُ دَاوُودَ also means the Psalms of David — what David used to sing, or chant, of the Psalms (يَتَغَنَّى بِهِ, written يُتَغَنَّى به in the CK); and to such is likened the utmost sweetness of voice in reciting.

And آل is said to be redundant here, the person himself being meant.

Or مزامير داوود means kinds of prayer, or supplication. It is the plural of مِزْمَارٌ and of مَزْمُورٌ or مُزْمُورٌ.
