He slipped: also with and. The synonym is زَلَّ, for which ذَلَّ is wrongly put in [some of] the copies of the K.

The first of the two is also said of an arrow, [apparently meaning it slid along the ground,] like زَهِقَ, in art. زهق.

This is the source of the reading of Aboo-Jaafar and Nāfiʿ [in the Kur 68:51], وَإِنْ يَكَادُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيَزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ, meaning [And those who have disbelieved almost] smite you with their evil eyes so as to remove you from the station in which God has placed you, out of enmity to you. [Or this reading may be taken in agreement with the common reading: see form 4.]

IB says that, according to ʿAlee Ibn-Hamzeh, it is only زَبَقَهُ with ب, and that الزَّبْقُ means plucking out, not shaving. But according to Fr, of a man who has shaved his head one says قد زلقه [whether with teshdeed or not is not shown] and ازلقه.

[This token is the maṣdar.] The place became like the مَزْلَقَة, and so too even when there is no water in it.

According to the O and K, [the maṣdar] تَزْلِيقٌ also means anointing the body with oils and the like, so that it becomes like the مَزْلَقَة; the O adds, even when it is without water. But this confuses two meanings: one is the first explained above in this entry, and the other is anointing the body with oils and the like, as in the L and the Tekmileh.

He made him slip; also زَلَقَهُ.

All the readers except those of El-Medeeneh read this [in the Kur 68:51]; so according to El-ʿOtbee. Or the meaning is: [almost] smite you with their [evil] eyes.

[It is also said that] ازلق فُلَانًا بِبَصَرِهِ means he looked at such a one with the look of a person displeased, or angry; or نَظَرَ إِلَى فُلَانٍ فَأَزْلَقَهُ بِبَصَرِهِ has that meaning, and the saying in the Kur mentioned above is explained in this way too.

he made another's foot slip, or made the foot not stay firm in its place—ازلق رِجْلَهُ

Said of a camel and of a mare; the same as أَسْقَطَتْ or أَجْهَضَتْ. Or: she (a mare) cast forth her young one completely formed; or, as some say, not completely formed.

One also says ازلقت بِجَنِينِهَا, like أَمْلَصَتْ به; so Abu-l-ʿAbbās, in art. ملص.

Or ازلقت وَلَدَهَا is said of a female of any kind, and means she cast forth her young one before it was completely formed.

This word is used alone, and is originally a maṣdar; and زَلِقٌ, زَلْقٌ, زَلَاقَةٌ, مَزْلَقٌ and مَزْلَقَةٌ all mean the same. [The last two are wrongly written in the CK مِزْلَق and مِزْلَقَة.]

Hence, in the Kur [18:38], فَتُصْبِحَ صَعِيدًا زَلَقًا, that is, [So that it shall become] smooth ground, with nothing in it, or with no plants in it; or, according to Akh, such that the feet will not stand firmly on it.

Mohammad Ibn-Besheer says: [Appoint for your foot, before the stepping, the place on which it will fall, or, as in the Ham p. 522, simply its place, ] for a man who walks on a slippery place carelessly slips.
