Core sense — increase; purity, purification; the poor-rategenerated
1
Or زَكٰوةٌ. [According to El-Hareeree, it is to be written with ا when a pronoun is added to it, and also in the dual; but I have not found this rule generally kept, even in the best manuscripts, nor in the similar cases of صَلٰوةٌ and حَيٰوةٌ (to which it is also applied) in the best copies of the Kur-án.]
Of the measure فَعَلَةٌ [that is, originally زَكَوَةٌ], like صَدَقَةٌ, which is one of its synonyms; a word of the class of homonyms.
IAth: increase, or augmentation, as also زَكَآءٌ, resulting from the blessing of God. Er-Rāghib: this is said to be the primary meaning, and it is taken as relating both to the things of this world and to those of the world to come.
1.1
And purity. And particularly the dryness of the earth or ground, which is its purity from defilement.
1.2and who are acting in their religious service for God's purification of them, or for their own purification—وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكٰوةِ فَاعِلُونَ
And purification: a meaning it is said to have in the Kur 23:4. IAth.
Er-Rāghib: لِلزَّكٰوة is not here an object of فَاعِلُونَ, the ل in it marking the aim and the cause.
1.3[and the disposition to mercy, or compassion, from us, and religious service]—وَحَنَانًا مِنْ لَدُنَّا وَزَكٰوةً
Also, as being a way of purifying oneself, good, or righteous, conduct: it has been explained in this sense as used in the Kur 18:80; or as meaning goodness, or righteousness, which زَكَآءٌ also signifies.
And religious service, as being the means of purification: so, according to some, it signifies in the Kur 19:14. Er-Rāghib.
Or it here means طُهْرَة, that is, purification, or purity. And, apart from the instances mentioned just above, this is the only place in the Kur-án where it is used in any sense other than the one that follows.
Qur’ān 18:81 approximate — somewhere between 18:80 and 18:110 Lane cites “Kur xviii. 80”
Qur’ān 19:15 approximate — somewhere between 19:4 and 19:23 Lane cites “Kur xix. 14”
Qur’ān 18:81 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
فَأَرَدْنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهُ زَكَوٰةً وَأَقْرَبَ رُحْمًا"So we desired that their Lord would give them in exchange (a son) better in purity (of conduct) and closer in affection.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.4the alms of the breaking of the fast, given at the end of Ramaḍān—زَكَاةُ الفِطْرِ
And the poor-rate: the portion, or amount, of property that is given from it by its owner to the poor, so that he may purify it by doing so. Er-Rāghib: it is given as the due of God.
[In the S it is merely said that the زَكٰوة of property is well known: giving it is obligatory, provided that the property is of a certain amount and has been held eleven months; the portion given varies with the nature and amount of the property, but is generally a fortieth part of it, or of its value, that is, two and a half per cent.]
It is so named for the reason given above, or as being a cause for hoping for increase, or as making the soul thrive by means of the good things and blessings gained by it, or for both of these reasons. Er-Rāghib.
This is obligatory on every one of the Muslims, free or slave, male or female, young or old, poor or rich; and it purifies the faster from useless and lewd talk. It consists of a صَاع of dates, or of barley, [or of raisins or some other ordinary kind of food,] or half that quantity of wheat.
[The plural is زَكَوَاتٌ.]
1.5
Also, as being an attribution of purity, or goodness, or righteousness, praise.
1.6
And the pure, or best, part of a thing: on the authority of Aboo-ʿAlee.
