Form 1زَبَرَ البِئْرَ9 senses · 4 main
muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـِيَفْعِلُmaṣdarزَبْرٌ زَبَارَةٌ

Core sense — he cased a well with stones; he restrained him; he wrote itgenerated

1.1

He cased the well, walling it internally with stones.

[ and perhaps زَبِرَ also,].

1.1.1the putting one part of a building on anotherزَبْرٌ

[As is done in casing a well.]

In this sense too it is a maṣdar, its verb being زَبَرَ.

1.1.2he threw stones at him, he pelted him with stonesزَبَرَهُ بِالحِجَارَةِ

.

1.1.3he chid him, restraining or forbidding him with rough speech; he repelled him forciblyزَبَرَهُ

Perhaps from زَبَرَ in the first sense explained above, because one whom you restrain from error you strengthen, as a well is strengthened by being cased.

Muḍāriʿ زَبُرَ and زَبِرَ; maṣdar as above. So MF, in art. هزبر.

he restrained him with rough speech from doing the thingزَبَرَهُ عَنِ الأَمْرِ
he chid the beggar and repelled him with rough speechزَبَرَ السَّائِلَ
1.2he wrote a writing or book; he wrote it firmly and well; he inscribed on stonesزَبَرَ

Muḍāriʿ زَبُرَ and زَبِرَ; maṣdar as above.

تَزْبِرَةٌ too is synonymous with كِتَابَةٌ, like زَبْرٌ and خَطٌّ.

As says: I heard an Arab of the desert say أَنَا أَعْرِفُ تَزْبِرَتِى, meaning خَطِّى and كِتَابَتِى [i. e. I know my writing, or handwriting].

Fr says it is either a maṣdar of زَبَّرَ, meaning he wrote, though I do not know the verb with teshdeed, or a simple noun like تَوْدِيَةٌ; so زَبَرَ is synonymous with ذَبَرَ. (A 'Obeyd, T and S in art. ذبر)

[And so, perhaps, is زَبَّرَ with ذَبَّرَ.]

1.2.1I read it, I recited itزَبَرْتُهُ

[Or did so with a low, faint voice.] Like ذَبَرْتُهُ.

1.2.2speaking, or speechزَبْرٌ

It is synonymous with كَلَامٌ. SM says: it is found so in all the copies, but I have not found any authoritative example of it, so it needs consideration.

[According to the TK, however, one says سَأَلْتُهُ فَمَا زَبَرَ لِى بِزَبْرٍ, meaning I asked him and he did not speak a word to me.]

1.3being patient, patienceزَبْرٌ

According to the K it is synonymous with صَبْرٌ.

One says مَا لَهُ زَبْرٌ وَلَاصَبْرٌ.

ISd says this is mentioned by IAar, but in my opinion the meaning here is عَقْلٌ. [See زَبْرٌ below.]

[Or, as synonymous with صَبْرٌ, it may be a maṣdar: for according to the TK one says لم يزبر عليه, meaning he did not endure it with patience.]

1.4he became bulkyزَبُرَ

Said of a ram..

(As, TA.) زَبْرٌ is also syn. with كَلَامٌ [as meaning The act of speaking, or speech as a subst.]: (K:) [SM says,] thus it is found in all the copies: but [he adds] I have not found any authoritative ex. of it, so it requires consideration. (TA.) Core sense — a piece of iron; the upper part of the back; a lion's manegenerated

1but they have become divided, in their state, among themselves, into partiesفَتَقَطَّعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ زُبُرًا

A piece of iron; or a big piece of iron. Plural زُبَرٌ and زُبُرٌ. The first plural occurs in the Kur 18:95.

In the Kur 23:55; also read زُبَرًا, the meaning being قِطَعًا in both cases.

Or the one who reads زُبُرًا makes it plural of زَبُورٌ, not of زُبْرَةٌ, since the measure فُعْلَةٌ does not take the measure فُعُلٌ in the plural; and the meaning is that they have made their religion [rest upon] various books.

زُبَرٌ is plural of زُبْرَةٌ; or it may also be plural of زَبُورٌ, originally زُبُرٌ and changed from it, as some of the Arabs are said to have said جُدَدٌ for the plural of جَدِيدٌ, which is originally and regularly جُدُدٌ, in the same way as one says رُكَبَاتٌ for رُكُبَاتٌ and غُرَفَاتٌ for غُرُفَاتٌ.

This opinion is strengthened by AA's allowing the readings زُبُرًا, زُبْرًا and زُبَرًا, زُبْرًا being a contraction of زُبُرًا, as عُنْقٌ is of عُنُقٌ.

Qur’ān 18:96 approximate — somewhere between 18:80 and 18:110 Lane cites “Kur xviii. 95”
Qur’ān 18:96 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root

"Bring me blocks of iron." At length, when he had filled up the space between the two steep mountain-sides, He said, "Blow (with your bellows)" Then, when he had made it (red) as fire, he said: "Bring me, that I may pour over it, molten lead."Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

1.1

2

The upper part of the back, next the neck; or the part between the two shoulder-blades; or the part where the neck joins the backbone; synonymous with كَاهِلٌ. Or the place of the كاهل; or something rising from the كاهل.

The plural in this sense is أَزْبَارٌ; or that is a plural of a plural, as though it were plural of زُبَرٌ, and this the plural of زُبْرَةٌ in this sense.

One says شَدَّ لِلْأَمْرِ زُبْرَتَهُ: he strengthened his كَاهِل and his back for the affair.

2.1

And hence: the mass of hair between the shoulder-blades of the lion; [the mane of a lion;] the hair collected between the shoulder-blades of the lion and the like, or upon the place of the كَاهِل [explained above], and upon the elbows, of the lion; and any hair in a similarly collected state.

[This description is wrong if applied to the constellation as it is figured today, but no doubt right for it as figured by the Arabs. Kzw, in his description of Leo, says that they are two stars, on the belly and on the projecting part of the haunch-bone, of Leo.]

They are in the كَاهِل [or part of the back next the neck], or are the كَاهِلَانِ, of Leo; the eleventh of the Mansions of the Moon. [Also called الخَرَاتَانِ: see this word; and see مَنَازِلُ القَمَرِ in art. نزل.] It is of the dialect of El-Yemen.

Core sense — the nap, or villous substance, on the surface of a garmentgenerated

1figurative · مجاز — inferredits age became oldذَهَبَتِ الأَيَّامُ بِطَرَاوَتِهِ وَنَفَضَتْ زِئْبِرَهُ

(S, and K in art. زأبر; in the CK [wrongly] written زِئْبَر.) And زِئْبُرٌ, sometimes pronounced so — or this form, mentioned by IJ and ISd, is incorrect — and زُؤْبُرٌ and زُوبُرٌ and زَوْبَرٌ, as also زَغْبَرٌ or زِغْبَرٌ, or زِغْبِرٌ (as in another copy of the K and in the O and TA in the same article), and زَغْبُرٌ or زِغْبُرٌ.

[The nap, or villous substance, upon the surface of a garment, or piece of cloth;] what is upon the surface of a new garment, or piece of cloth, like what is upon the surface of [the kind of cloth called] خَزّ; the زِئْبِر of [the kind of cloth called] خَزّ, and of a قَطِيفَة, and of any garment or piece of cloth; the زغبر of a garment or piece of cloth; or what appears of the دَرْز [q. v., here meaning nap, or villous substance,] of a garment or piece of cloth.

he took it altogether, leaving nothing of itأَخَذَهُ بِزَوْبَرِهِ

[Hence] one says this, literally: days took away its freshness and shook off its nap.

And زَأْبَرِهِ and زَبَرِهِ, as also زَغْبَرِهِ, and زَنَوْبَرِهِ, incorrectly written in the K زَبَوْبَرِهِ.

Ibn-Ahmar says: [And if a howler of Ma'add utters an ode in which is a fault,] it is attributed to me altogether, when I have not been the author of it

shāhid
وَإِنْ قَالَ عَاوٍ مِنْ مَعَدٍّ قَصِيدَةًبِهَا جَرَبٌ عُدَّتْ عَلَىَّ بِزَوْبَرَا

The last word, according to Aboo-'Alee [El-Fárisee], is imperfectly declinable because it is made a proper name for the قصيدة, and so combines the two qualities of being determinate and being of the feminine gender; he said this in answer to a question of IJ. But some say that the word there means a calamity, or misfortune; and IB says that it is a proper name for a bitch (كلبة [if this is not a mistranscription]), of the feminine gender.

[In one copy of the S I find only the last three words of this verse; in another it begins إِذَا قَالَ غَاوٍ مِنْ تَنُوخَ. In the TA the former reading is given, except that غَاوٍ is put in the place of عَاوٍ.]
