maṣdarرِيحٌ رَوْحٌ رُؤُوحٌ رَاحٌmuḍāriʿيَرَاحُ يَرُوحُ يَرَاحٌ

Core sense — he went in the evening; he was brisk, lively; he smelt itgenerated

1.1it (a day) was one of good, or pleasant, windراح

Second person رِحْتَ; also: it (a day) was violently windy.

.

1.1.1it was, or became, cool and pleasant [by means of the wind]راح

Said of a house, or tent, the door being opened: it [was, or became, aired by the wind; or] was entered by the wind.

.

1.1.2the trees felt the windراح الشَّجَرُ

[See also another meaning below.]

1.1.3figurative · مجازhe was, or became, brisk, lively, active, prompt, or quickراح

.

[As though he felt the wind and was refreshed by it.]

ارتاح, رَاحٌ and اِرْتِيَاحٌ have the same meaning; in the CK الاِرْتِياحِ is wrongly put for الاِرْتِيَاحُ.

he (a man) became light, or active, and quickاِسْتَرْوَحَ

The same as شَمَّرَ.

he took to the thing briskly, and was rejoiced by itراح لِلشَّىْءِ

[And إِلَى الشَّىْءِ] and ارتاح [and ارتاح بِهِ] in the same sense.

he took to the thing, or affair, briskly; he was brisk to do itراح لِلْأَمْرِ

A poet says: [And you asserted that you do not, or will not, take to women with briskness, nor be rejoiced by them]

shāhid
وَ زَعَمْتَ أَنَّكَ لَا تَرَاحُ إِلَى النِّسَا

.

The same as ارتاح.

he brightened in countenance at that thing, and rejoiced in itراح لِذٰلِكَ الأَمْرِ

Also إِلَيْهِ; maṣdar رَوَاحٌ, رُؤُوحٌ, رَاحٌ, رِيَاحَةٌ, رَاحَةٌ and أَرْيَحِيَّةٌ.

In the L [explained by أَشْرَقَ لَهُ, and I take this to be the right reading, rather than the one I find in the copies of the K, which is أَشْرَفَ لَهُ, perhaps meaning the same as أَشْرَفَ عَلَيْهِ, that is, he became acquainted with that thing, or knew it, the same as اِطَّلَعَ عَلَيْهِ.]

He was thereby made cheerful, brisk, and lively, so as to be prompt in acts of kindness or beneficence: said of a generous man when he is asked to confer a gift, and sometimes, figuratively, of dogs when called by their owner, and of other animals.

[It is also said that] رَوَاحٌ, رَوَاحَةٌ, رَاحَةٌ, رَوْحَةٌ and رَوِيحَةٌ [all apparently maṣdars of رَاحَ, or some of them may be simple nouns,] and مُرَايَحَةٌ [as though maṣdar of رَايَحَ] mean the experiencing of relief from grief or sorrow after suffering it; or the experiencing of the joy, or happiness, that comes of certainty. [See also رَوْحٌ below.]

One says also اِسْتَرْوَحْتُ إِلَى حَدِيثِهِ [apparently meaning: I was made cheerful, or lively, at his discourse, as the context where it is mentioned seems to show; or perhaps: he trusted to his discourse, and became quiet, or easy, in mind, in line with an explanation of the verb given below]: or استراح الى حديثه, he inclined to his discourse.

he was made cheerful and lively, so as to be prompt to do what was kindراح لِلْمَعْرُوفِ

Second person رِحْتَ; maṣdar رَاحَةٌ, رِيحٌ and ارتاح له.

He inclined to, and loved, kindness or beneficence.

And ارتاح لِلنَّدَى [He was affected with cheerfulness and liveliness, and so disposed to bounty or liberality].

And نَزَلَتْ بِهِ بَلِيَّةٌ فَٱرْتَاحَ ٱللّٰهُ بِرَحْمَتِهِ فَأَنْقَذَهُ مِنْهَا [A trial, or an affliction, befell him, and God was active and prompt with his mercy, and delivered him from it]: but ISd disapproves of speaking of God in this way, and El-Fárisee says that it is an instance of the rough speech of the Arabs of the desert.

[Hence seems to have come the assertion that] الاِرْتِيَاحُ means the being merciful; and ارتاح ٱللّٰهُ لَهُ بِرَحْمَتِهِ, God delivered him from trial, or affliction; or ارتاح ٱللّٰهُ لِفُلَانٍ, God was merciful to such a one.

his hand was active, prompt, or quick, to do such a thingراحت يَدُهُ لِكَذَا

Or بِكَذَا: as, for instance, with a sword, to strike with it.

Hence the saying of the Prophet, مَنْ رَاحَ إِلَى الجُمُعَةِ فِى السَّاعَةِ الأُولَى فَكَأَنَّمَا قَدَّمَ بَدَنَةً [Whoever is brisk, or prompt, in going to the Friday prayers in the first hour, he is as though he offered a camel, or a cow or bull, for sacrifice at Mekkeh]: the meaning is خَفَّ إِلَيْهَا and مَضَى, not the going in the latter part of the day. [See also what follows.]

1.1.4he, and they, went, or journeyed, in the evening, or afternoonرَاحَ

maṣdars رَوَاحٌ and تروّح, both with the same meaning; the opposite of غَدَا.

Said of a man, and of a company of men: from the declining of the sun from the meridian until night; this is said to be the primary meaning. The words also mean he, or they, returned; and went, or journeyed, at any time.

الرَّوَاحُ is not, as some think, only the going in the last part of the day; the Arabs use it of going, or journeying, at any time of the night or day, and so الغُدُوُّ: so say Az and others.

Or راح, maṣdar رَوَاحٌ, means he came, or went, after the declining of the sun from the meridian, but is sometimes used of going in an absolute sense, and so it means in the tradition beginning مَنْ رَاحَ إِلَى الجُمُعَةِ [mentioned above, where a different explanation of the verb is given].

One says to a companion or companions تَرَوَّحْ or تَرَوَّحُوا, meaning Go, or journey.

the camels returned in the evening, or afternoonرَاحَتِ الإِبِلُ

Muḍāriʿ تَرُوحُ and تَرَاحُ; maṣdar رَوَاحٌ and رَائِحَةٌ. This form means only that their pastors drove, or brought, them back to their owners; so says Az.

I went to them in the evening, or afternoonرُحْتُ إِلَيْهِمْ
I came to them in the evening, or afternoonعِنْدَهُمْ

Maṣdar رَوْحٌ and رَوَاحٌ.

And so رُحْتُهُمْ, and رَوَّحْتُهُمْ, maṣdar تَرْوِيحٌ, and تَرَوَّحْتُهُمْ and أَنَا أُغَادِيهِ وَ أُرَاوِحُهُ [I go, or come, to him early in the morning, in the first part of the day, or between the prayer of daybreak and sunrise, and I go, or come, to him in the evening, or afternoon, apparently he doing the like to me].

his camels returned to him after the declining of the sun from the meridianرَاحَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِبِلُهُ

Also غَنَمُهُ, his sheep or goats, and مَالُهُ, his cattle; only at that time. اراحت may perhaps be a variant of the same. Or راحت بِالعَشِىِّ عَلَى أَهْلِهَا: they (that is, camels) returned from the place of pasture in the evening, or afternoon, to their owners.

1.1.5the trees broke forth with leavesراح الشَّجَرُ

Muḍāriʿ يَزَاحُ and تروّح.

Said to be figurative in the TA, though not so marked in the A.

With the first of the two forms: the trees broke forth with leaves before the winter, when the night became cold, without rain; and so with the second; or with the second, the trees broke forth with leaves after the close of the صَيْف [or summer].

the branch put forth leaves after other leaves had fallen from itتروّح الغُصْنُ

[See another meaning of راح الشجر near the beginning of this article.]

1.1.6he became a stallion, or fit to coverراح

Said of a horse; perhaps from the same verb as meaning he was, or became, brisk, lively, and the like.

maṣdar رَاحَةٌ.

1.2the wind smote itرَاحَتْهُ الرِّيحُ

Muḍāriʿ تَرَاحُ. Said of a thing, as, for instance, a tree, and of a tempestuous wind.

it was smitten, or blown upon, by the windرِيحَ
the tree was blown upon by the windرِيحَتِ الشَّجَرَةُ
they (a people, or party) were smitten and destroyed by the windرِيحُوا

Said of a pool of water left by a torrent; and the like is said of other things.

Or it was blown about, or shaken, by the wind, so that its leaves were made to fall; or it had the dust scattered upon it by the wind.

Or they entered upon a time of wind; and in this last sense also أَرَاحُوا or أَرْوَحُوا.

1.2.1he smelt the thing; he perceived its smell, or odourراح الشَّىْءَ

First person رِحْتُ; muḍāriʿ يَرَاحُ and يَرِيحُ [the maṣdar being apparently رَوْحٌ for the first and رِيحٌ for the second, as in the phrase of similar meaning that follows].

Also أَرَاحَهُ and أَرْوَحَهُ in the same sense.

he smelt the odourاستراحهُ

Also اِسْتَرْوَحَهُ, and راح الرِّيحَ, and muḍāriʿ يَرِيحُ, and أَرَاحَهَا.

he smelt me; he perceived my smell, or odourأَرَاحَنِى

Said of an object of the chase; also أَرْوَحَنِى, whose maṣdar is إِرْوَاحٌ.

he smelt a human being; he perceived his smell, or odourاراح

Said of an object of the chase; also أَرْوَحَ, اِسْتَرْوَحَ and استراح. These three also mean he smelt gently, so as to perceive the odour of a thing; or the last two mean he smelt, or perceived, odour; and these two, said of a stallion, mean he perceived the smell of the female.

he smelt, or perceived, the odourأَرْوَحَ الرِّيحَ

Said of a beast of prey; also أَرَاحَهَا, استراحها and اِسْتَرْوَحَهَا; and according to Lh some say رَاحَهَا, but this is seldom used.

[It is asserted that استراح is only from الرَّاحَةُ, but this assertion is of no weight against the authorities cited above.]

It is said in a tradition, مَنْ قَتَلَ نَفْسًا مُعَاهِدَةً لَمْ يَرَحٌ رَائِحَةَ الجَنَّةِ, or لم يَرِحْ, or لم يُرِحْ, that is, [he who slays a person with whom he is on terms of peace, (or, as another version has it, مُؤْمِنًا, that is, a believer,)] will not perceive the odour of Paradise. As says: I do not know whether it be from رِحْتُ or from أَرَحْتُ.

I perceived from him (a man) a sweet odourأَرْوَحْتُ مِنْهُ طِيبًا
1.2.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe obtained from you a favour, or benefitراح مِنْكَ مَعْرُوفًا

[And hence, apparently.]

Also اراحهُ in the same sense.

1.3he (a man) had the quality termed رَوَحٌرَوِحَ

[Explained below, that is, width in the space between the thighs or legs, and the like; or] a spreading in the fore part of each foot.

Muḍāriʿ يَرْوَحُ; maṣdar رَوَحٌ.

his foot had that qualityرَوِحَتْ قَدَمُهُ

(L.) [It is also said that] رَوَاحٌ and رَوَاحَةٌ and رَاحَةٌ and رَوْحَةٌ and رَوِيحَةٌ [all app. inf. ns. of رَاحَ , or some of them may be simple substs.,] and مُرَايَحَةٌ [as though inf. n. of رَايَحَ ] (L, K) signify The experiencing relief from grief or sorrow, after suffering therefrom: (L:) or the experiencing the joy, or happiness, arising from certainty. (K. [See also رَوْحٌ , below.]) You say also, اِسْتَرْوَحْتُ إِلَى حَدِيثِهِ [app. meaning I was affected with cheerfulness, liveliness, or the like, at his discourse, or narration; as seems to be indicated by the context in the place where it is mentioned: or perhaps, he trusted to his discourse, and became quiet, or easy, in mind; agreeably with an explanation of the verb which see below]: (A:) or استراح الى حديثه he inclined to his discourse. (MA.) And راح لِلْمَعْرُوفِ , (S, A, L, K,) sec. pers. رِحْتَ , (L,) aor. يَرَاحُ , inf. n. رَاحَةٌ (S, L, K) and رِيحٌ ; (L;) and ارتاح له ; (A, L;) He was affected with alacrity, cheerfulness, briskness, liveliness, or sprightliness, disposing him to promptness to do what was kind or beneficent: (As, S, L, K:) he inclined to, and loved, kindness or beneficence. (TA.) [Hence seems to have originated, as is app. implied in the TA, the assertion that] الاِرْتِيَاحُ signifies The being merciful: and ارتاح ٱللّٰهُ لَهُ بِرَحْمَتِهِ , God delivered him from trial, or affliction: (K:) or ارتاح ٱللّٰهُ لِفُلَانٍ God was merciful to such a one. (S.) One also says, راحت يَدُهُ لِكَذَا , (K,) or بِكَذَا , (S L,) His hand was active, prompt, or quick, (S, L, K, TA,) to do such a thing, (K, TA,) or with such a thing; (S, L, TA;) as, for instance, with a sword, to strike with it. (L.) Hence the saying of the Prophet, مَنْ رَاحَ إِلَى الجُمُعَةِ فِى السَّاعَةِ الأُولَى فَكَأَنَّمَا قَدَّمَ بَدَنَةً [Whosoever is brisk, or prompt, or quick, in repairing to the Friday-prayers in the first hour, he is as though he offered a camel, or a cow or bull, for sacrifice at Mekkeh]: (K, * TA:) the meaning is, خَفَّ إِلَيْهَا , (K, TA,) and مَضَى ; (TA;) not the going in the latter part of the day. (K, * TA.) [See also what follows.] وَ زَعَمْتَ أَنَّكَ لَا تَرَاحُ إِلَى النِّسَا رَاحَ , aor. يَرُوحُ , inf. n. رَوَاحٌ ; and تروّح ; both signify the same; (S, Msb, K, &c.;) contr. of غَدَا ; (S;) said of a man, (TA,) and of a company of men, (K, TA,) He, and they, went, or journeyed, or worked, or did a thing, in the evening, (K, TA,) or in the afternoon, i. e., from the declining of the sun from the meridian until night: (IF, Msb, K, TA:) this is said to be the primary meaning: (TA:) but they also mean he, or they, returned: (Msb:) and went, or journeyed, at any time: (Msb, * TA:) [for] الرَّوَاحُ is not, as some imagine it to be, only [the going, or journeying,] in the last, or latter, part of the day; but is used by the Arabs as meaning the going, or journeying, at any time of the night or day; as also الغُدُوُّ : so say Az and others: (Msb:) or راح , inf. n. رَوَاحٌ , signifies he came, or went, after the declining of the sun from the meridian: but is sometimes used as meaning he went in an absolute sense: (Mgh:) and thus it means in the trad. commencing مَنْ رَاحَ إِلَى الجُمُعَةِ [mentioned above, where a different explanation of the verb is given]: (Mgh, * Msb:) and [in like manner] one says to his companion or companions, تَرَوَّحْ or تَرَوَّحُوا as meaning Go, or journey: (TA:) but رَاحَتِ الإِبِلُ , (S, L, K,) aor. تَرُوحُ and تَرَاحُ , inf. n. رَوَاحٌ (L) and رَائِحَةٌ , (AZ, L, K,) signifies only The camels returned in the evening, or afternoon, (S, * Msb,) when their pastors drove or brought them back to their owners: so says Az. (Msb.) You say, رُحْتُ إِلَيْهِمْ and عِنْدَهُمْ , inf. n. رَوْحٌ and رَوَاحٌ , I went, (K, TA,) and I came, (TA,) to them in the evening, or afternoon; [or at any time, as appears from what has been said above;] and so رُحْتُهُمْ , (K, TA,) inf. n. رَوْحٌ ; (TA;) and رَوَّحْتُهُمْ , (K, TA,) inf. n. تَرْوِيحٌ ; (TA;) and تَرَوَّحْتُهُمْ : (K, TA:) and أَنَا أُغَادِيهِ وَ أُرَاوِحُهُ [I go, or come, to him early in the morning, in the first part of the day, or between the time of the prayer of daybreak and sunrise, and I go, or come, to him in the evening, or afternoon, app. he doing the like to me]. (A. [See also 6.]) And رَاحَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِبِلُهُ , and غَنَمُهُ , and مَالُهُ , His camels, and his sheep or goats, and his cattle, returned to him after the declining of the sun from the meridian; only at that time: and اراحت may perhaps be a dial. var. thereof: (L, TA:) or راحت بِالعَشِىِّ عَلَى أَهْلِهَا they (i. e. camels) returned from the place of pasture in the evening, or afternoon, to their owners. (S, * Msb.) راح الشَّجَرُ , (S, A, K,) aor. يَزَاحُ ; (S, A;) and تروّح ; (S, A;) [said in the TA to be tropical, but not so in the A;] The trees broke forth with leaves: (S, A, K:) or the former, the trees broke forth with leaves before the winter, when the night became cold, without rain; (As, TA;) and so the latter: (L:) or the latter, the trees broke forth with leaves after the close of the صَيْف [or summer]: (S, TA:) and تروّح الغُصْنُ The branch put forth leaves after other leaves had fallen from it. (R, TA.) [See another meaning of راح الشجر near the beginning of this art.] راح , (S, K,) aor. يَرَاحُ , inf. n. رَاحَةٌ , (S,) said of a horse, [perhaps from the same verb as signifying “ he was, or became, brisk, lively, ” &c.,] He became a stallion, or fit to cover. (S, K.) رَاحَتْهُ الرِّيحُ , aor. تَرَاحُ , The wind smote it; namely, a thing; (L, K;) as, for instance, a tree, and said of a tempestuous wind. (L.) And رِيحَ , said of a pool of water left by a torrent, It was smitten [or blown upon] by the wind. (S, A, K.) In like manner also it is said of other things. (TA.) One says, رِيحَتِ الشَّجَرَةُ The tree was blown upon by the wind: or was blown about, or shaken, by the wind, so that its leaves were made to fall: or had the dust scattered upon it by the wind. (L.) And رِيحُوا They (a people, or party,) were smitten and destroyed by the wind: (K, TA:) or they entered upon [a time of] wind; (K;) as also, in this latter sense, أَرَاحُوا , (S, K,) or أَرْوَحُوا . (A.) راح الشَّىْءَ , (A 'Obeyd, S, K,) first pers. رِحْتُ , (A 'Obeyd, S,) aor. يَرَاحُ (A 'Obeyd, S, K,) and يَرِيحُ , (AA, S, K,) [inf. n., app., of the former رَوْحٌ and of the latter رِيحٌ as in the phrase of similar meaning following;] and أَرَاحَهُ , (Ks, S, K,) and أَرْوَحَهُ ; (AZ, K;) He smelt the thing; perceived its smell, or odour; (S, K, &c.;) as also استراحهُ and اِسْتَرْوَحَهُ : (Ham p. 228:) and راح الرِّيحَ , aor. يَرَاحُ , inf. n. رَوْحٌ ; and aor. يَرِيحُ , inf. n. رِيحٌ ; and أَرَاحَهَا ; He smelt the odour. (Msb.) (TA) [It is asserted (in Har p. 324) that استراح is only from الرَّاحَةُ ; but this assertion is of no weight against the authorities cited above.] It is said in a trad., مَنْ قَتَلَ نَفْسًا مُعَاهِدَةً لَمْ يَرَحٌ رَائِحَةَ الجَنَّةِ , (A 'Obeyd, S, Mgh, * Msb, *) or لم يَرِحْ , (AA, S, Msb,) or لم يُرِحْ , (Ks, S, Mgh, Msb,) i. e. Nounرُوحٌ11 senses · 2 main

Core sense — the soul, spirit, vital principle; breath; inspirationgenerated

1his soul departed, or went forthخَرَجَ رُوحُهُ

The soul, spirit, or vital principle; the same as نَفْسٌ [though there is a difference between these two words, for they are not always interchangeable, as I have shown in art. نفس].

Defined as مَا بِهِ حَيَاةُ الأَنْفُسِ; [see also رَوْحٌ, third sentence.]

It occurs often in the Qur-án and the Traditions in different senses, but generally means the vital principle: a subtle vapoury substance which is the source of life, of sensation, and of voluntary motion; also called the رُوح حَيَوَانِىّ (in explanation of the term نَفْسٌ); or a subtle body whose source is the hollow of the bodily heart, and which spreads into all the other parts of the body by means of the pulsing veins, or arteries (in explanation of the term الرُّوحُ الحَيَوَانِىُّ) [so too نَفْسٌ: see also Genesis 9:4; many of the ancients believed the soul to reside in the blood: see Aristotle, De Anim. 1.2, and Virgil's Æn. 9.349].

Or the vital principle in man; or the breath which a man breathes, and which pervades the whole body — and this seems to be the original idea expressed by the word: after it goes out he ceases to breathe, and when it has completely gone forth his eyes remain gazing towards it until they close; called in Persian جَانْ.

According to the Sunnees, the rational soul (النَّفْسُ النَّاطِقَةُ [also termed الرُّوحُ الإِنْسَانِىُّ]), which is able to make its ideas known by speech and to understand speech, and which does not perish with the perishing of the body, being a substance, not an accident; as is shown by the words in the Qur 3:163, which refer to the روح.

Most of the doctors of the fundamentals of religion forbid going into this matter, because God has abstained from making it known; the philosophers say that it is the blood, by the exhausting of which life ceases.

The word is masculine with the Arabs, unlike نَفْسٌ, which they make feminine; but it is also feminine, apparently as meaning نَفْسٌ, as is said in the R, and most hold it to be as often feminine as masculine.

[Also خَرَجَتْ رُوحُهُ in the same sense.] The plural is أَرْوَاحٌ.

Qur’ān 3:169 approximate — somewhere between 3:145 and 3:179 Lane cites “Kur iii. 163”
1.1give life to it, or enliven it, with your wind, or breathأَحْيِهَا بِرُوحِكَ

Also the same as نَفْخٌ [properly a blowing with the mouth, but here] meaning wind that issues from the رُوح: wind, or breath.

Said by Dhu-r-Rummeh of a fire that he had struck, on which he told his companion to blow.

he filled the skin with his wind, or breathمَلَأَ القِرْبَةَ مِنْ رُوحِهِ

[Hence,] الرُّوحُ also means inspiration, or divine revelation, such as is imparted by means of an angel: so in the Qur 16:2 and 40:15. It is so called because it quickens from the death of unbelief, and so is to a man like the رُوح, which is the vital principle of his body; or, according to Zj as reported in the L (but in the K “and”), the prophetic commission.

Qur’ān 16:2 approximate — somewhere between 16:1 and 16:7 Lane cites “Kur xvi. 2”
Qur’ān 16:2 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root

Core sense — wind; predominance, power; aid against an enemy, a turn of good fortunegenerated

1figurative · مجازO God, make it winds, and do not make it a windاَللّٰهُمَّ ٱجْعَلْهَا رِيَاحًا وَ لَا تَجْعَلْهَا رِيحًا

Originally رِوْحٌ, the و being changed into ى because of the preceding kesreh, as is shown by its diminutive mentioned below; Sb held it to be of the measure فِعْلٌ, and Abu-l-Hasan فِعْلٌ and فُعْلٌ [if the latter, originally رُيْحٌ].

Wind; that is, the air that is made to obey [the will of God] and to run its course between heaven and earth; or the breath of the air, and likewise of anything: said to be so called because it generally brings رَوْح and رَاحَة [that is, rest, or ease].

One says رِيحٌ and رِيحَةٌ, like دَارٌ and دَارَةٌ [using the latter as a more special term; for] رِيحَةٌ means a portion of wind [that is, a wind of short duration, or a breath, puff, blast, or gust, of wind]; but رِيحٌ and رِيحَةٌ may be used in the same sense, and they are mentioned by some [as analogous] with كَوْكَبٌ and كَوْكَبَةٌ.

رِيْح is feminine in most cases, and all the other names for wind are feminine except إِعْصَارٌ, which is masculine; but ريح is sometimes made masculine as meaning هَوَآءٌ [it is used by physicians for flatus, flatulence, as in the phrase رِيحٌ غَلِيظَةٌ, a gross flatus].

The plural of paucity is أَرْوَاحٌ and أَرْيَاحٌ, the latter used by some but disallowed by AHát because there is in it no kesreh to cause the و to be changed into ى; and [the plural of multitude is] رِيَاحٌ, with ى because of the kesreh, and رِيَحٌ; the plural of the plural is أَرَاوِيحُ [plural of أَرْوَاحٌ] and أَرَايِيحُ [plural of أَرْيَاحٌ]; and the diminutive of رِيحٌ is رُوَيْحَةٌ.

رِيَاحٌ, or another plural form, is often used in a good sense, and the singular in an evil sense, because the Arabs say that the clouds are not made to give rain except by different winds blowing together; and this distinction is observed in the Qur-án.

It is related in a tradition that he used to say this when wind rose. [But this distinction is not always observed.]

Opinions differ about the formation of this word: many say that its middle radical letter is و and its original form رَيْوَحَانٌ, as may be argued from the form of its diminutive, mentioned below; others, that its original form is رَوْيَحَانٌ; and others, that its middle radical letter is ى and that it is of the same measure as شَيْطَانٌ, as may be argued from the form of its plural, mentioned below.

A certain well-known plant of sweet odour; the شَاهَسْفَرَم [or شَاهِسْفَرَم, that is, basil-royal, or common sweet basil, ocimum basilicum, the seed of which (called بِزْرُ الرَّيْحَانِ) is used in medicine]. [See also حَبَقٌ.]

Or any sweet-smelling plant; but when the common people use it without qualification, that particular plant is meant. Or the extremities of any sweet-smelling herb, when the first of its blossoms come forth upon it; or its leaves; or the leaves of seed-produce, so according to Fr in the Qur 55:11.

[It is a collective noun:] the ism waḥda is with ة, and is applied to a bunch of رَيْحَان; and with the article, ال, as a proper name, it means the حَنْوَة [a certain plant about which authors differ]. The diminutive of رَيْحَانٌ is رُوَيْحِينٌ, and the plural is رَيَاحِينُ.

Core sense — of, or relating to, the angels and the jinn; spiritualgenerated

Of, or relating to, the angels and the jinn, or genii: in this sense Abu-l-Khattáb asserts that he heard the first used. According to AO, the Arabs apply it to anything having in it a soul, or spirit, whether a human being or a beast; or it has this meaning as well.

According to Wardán Aboo-Khálid, as related by ISh, among the angels are those termed رُوحَانِيُّونَ and those created of light, and of the former are Jibreel, Meekáeel and Isráfeel; ISh adds that the روحانيّون are souls, or spirits, that have no bodies, and that the term روحانىّ is applied to nothing but what is of this kind, such as the angels and the jinn and the like. This is the correct explanation, not that of Ibn-El-Mudhaffar, that it means that into which a soul, or spirit, has been blown.
