Form 1رَهَا بَيْنَ رِجْلَيْهِ4 senses · 1 main

Core sense — he parted his legs; he went easily; it became still, or calmgenerated

He parted his legs, or made an opening between them; or he parted them widely, making a wide opening between them..

Hence the saying in the Qur'ān 44:23, وَ ٱتْرُكِ البَحْرَ رَهْوًا [explained in art. ترك and below].

the horses, or horsemen, came pacing along easily—جَآءَتِ الخَيْلُ رَهْوًا

he was gentle in going, or pace—رَهَا فِى السَّيْرِ

According to IAar, with the muḍāriʿ as above.

Some say that رَهْوٌ in going, or pace, is being soft or gentle with continuance; or going along quietly.

the camels came following one another—جَآءَتِ الإِبِلُ رَهْوًا

they, or she, went lightly—رَهَتْ

Said of camels or the like; muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above.

on this sense It also means going violently, so the word has two opposite meanings.

1.1.2the sea became still, or calm—رَهَا البَحْرُ

the heat became allayed—رَهَا الحَرُّ

It also means being still, quiet, motionless, calm, or allayed.

Hence some explain وَ ٱتْرُكِ البَحْرَ رَهْوًا as meaning: and leave the sea motionless, or calm; others as meaning: dry.

do that quietly, or calmly—اِفْعَلْ ذٰلِكَ رَهْوًا

he did that quietly, or calmly, without difficulty—فَعَلَ ذٰلِكَ سَهْوًا رَهْوًا

In art. سهو it is also explained as: voluntarily, without its being asked or demanded, and without constraint.

I gave to him voluntarily, without being asked—أَعْطَيْتُهُ رَهْوًا

A 'Obeyd: a جَوْبَة [that is, a depressed place, or a hollow, or an excavation, or one that is round and wide] in the place of abode of a people, into which the rain-water or other fluid flows.

Or, like رَهْوَةٌ, a depressed place in which water collects; and both words also mean an elevated place, so that they have two opposite meanings.

Or رَهْوَةٌ means an elevation like a hillock, on a hard and high, or high and level, tract of ground, or on a mountain, where hawks and eagles alight.

Or a hillock tending to softness, two or three cubits high, but only in a soft tract of ground, or in hard, or hard and level, ground of earth, mould, or clay, not on a mountain.

Some hold that it means a mountain itself; for Ghaṭafān are called in a tradition رَهْوَةٌ تَنْبَعُ مَآءً, meaning a mountain welling forth water; or the phrase means that in them were roughness and hardness.

The plural [apparently of رَهْوٌ, and by another account of رَهْوَةٌ, each agreeable with analogy] is رِهَآءٌ.
