maṣdarرَمْىٌmuḍāriʿيَرْمِى
Core sense — he threw it, he cast it; he shot at it; he accused himgenerated
1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe threw, cast, or flung the thing from his hand—مِنْ يَدِهِ
maṣdar رَمْىٌ and رَمَى بِهِ.
Also ارمى, that is, ارمى الشَّىْءَ مِنْ يَدِهِ. In the K it is implied that one says also ارمى بَهِ, in keeping with a phrase mentioned below.
I threw the stone from my hand—أَرْمَيْتُ الحَجَرَ مِنْ يَدِى
the horse threw off his rider—ارمى الفَرَسُ بِرَاكِبِهِ
I threw at him with my hand—رَمَيْتُ الرَّجُلَ
This is said إِذَا رَمَيْتَهُ بِيَدِكَ, that is, as meaning رَمَيْتُهُ بِيَدِى, which may be rendered: I threw him (the man) with my hand; and also: I threw, or shot, at him (the man) with my hand.
I threw him, or threw him down, off from the horse—أَرْمَيْتُهُ عَنِ الفَرَسِ وَغَيْرِهِ
Said when you remove him from his place.
he thrust him, or pierced him, with his spear, and threw him off his horse—طَعَنَهُ فَأَرْمَاهُ عَنْ فَرَسِهِ
So says El-Fárábee.
I threw down the load from the back of the camel—أَرْمَيْتُ الحِمْلَ عَنْ ظَهْرِ البَعِيرِ
and you did not cast—وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلٰكِنَّ ٱللّٰهَ رَمَى
In the Qur'ān 8:17. Aboo-Is-hák holds this figurative, meaning: you did not cast so as to reach the point that was reached when you cast, but God overruled the casting. Abu-l-'Abbás: you did not cast fear, or terror, into their hearts when you cast the pebbles, but God cast the fear. Mbr: you did not cast with your own strength when you cast, but with the strength of God, so that in effect God cast. See also another explanation below.

Also given as رَمَى السَّهْمَ عَن القَوْسِ and عَلَيْهَا; maṣdar رَمْىٌ and رِمَايَةٌ. El-Ghooree adds بِهَا.
But one should not say رَمَى بِهَا unless the meaning is "he threw it from his hand"; though some make it mean رَمَى عَنْهَا or رَمَى عَلَيْهَا, taking the ب to stand instead of عن or على.
1.1.3he shot, or shot at, the animal, or animals, of the chase—رَمَى القَنَصَ
