A calamity, or misfortune; (JK, S, K;) as also رَقَمٌ and رَقْمٌ ; (K;) all mean thus, and a thing that one cannot accomplish, or manage; (TA;) and رُقْمَةٌ signifies the same as رَقِمٌ . (JK.) One says, وَقَعَ فِى الرَّقِمِ , (TA,) and الرَّقْمَآءِ وَقَعَ فِى الرَّقِمِ , (S,) meaning He fell [into calamity or misfortune, and he fell into great calamity or misfortune, or] into that which he could not accomplish, or manage. Any one of several small marks of cauterization upon the shanks of a beast. (JK, T, TA.) One of what are termed الرَّقْمَتَانِ : (TA:) this signifies two [horny] things resembling two nails (JK, S, K, TA) in the legs of a beast (JK, K, TA) or in the legs of a sheep or goat, (S,) opposite each other: (JK, S, TA:) and of the ass and horse, two marks in the inner sides of the two arms: (S:) or the جَاعِرَتَانِ ; (K, TA;) which are two black spots [or marks made by cauterization] upon the rump of the ass: (TA:) or what borders upon the جَاعِرَتَانِ of the ass, of the mark made by cauterization: or two portions of [callous] flesh next to the inner side of each of the arms of the horse, having no hair upon them. Az: a certain plant, resembling the كرش — that is, كَرِش or كِرْش, a plant little known, said to be so called because its leaves resemble the villous coat of the stomach of an animal that chews the cud.

In another place Az says it is a herb that grows مشحطا — apparently a miscopying of مُسَطَّحًا, a term often used in describing plants, meaning expanded — juicy, or sappy, and scarcely ever eaten by camels or cattle except from want.

AHn describes the رقمة, perhaps meaning the رَقْمَة, only as a herb, or leguminous plant, of those termed أَحْرَار, whose particular characteristics he did not know.

Forskål, in his Flora Aegypt. Arab. p. 108, mentions a plant he saw in El-Yemen, previously unknown to him, which he calls “rokama prostrata,” of the class pentandria, writing its Arabic name رقمه and the pronunciation “Rókama.”

As used in the Kur 18:8 it is said to mean a tablet of lead on which were inscribed, or engraved, the names of the People of the Cave (commonly called the Seven Sleepers), their ancestry, their story, their religion, and what it was they fled from; so says Suh, on the authority of Fr.

Or a mass of stone (Suh) — that is, a stone tablet on which their names were inscribed, and which was put over the entrance of the cave.

Or the town, or village, they came out from; or their mountain, in which the cave was; or the valley in which the cave was; or their dog (El-Hasán); or the receptacle for ink — the JK and CK have “and” here — mentioned by IDrd, but with the expression of uncertainty as to its correctness, and said to be from the language of the Greeks; or the tablet: this last is also given as the meaning in the verse of the Kur-án.

But I'Ab is related by 'Ikrimeh to have said: I do not know what الرَّقِيمُ is, whether a book or writing, or a building.

It is said to be of the measure فَعِيل in the sense of the measure مَفْعُول.

Ibn-Habeeb: the most malignant of serpents, and the most given to pursuing people.

Or a serpent like the جَانّ in the fear people have of killing it, though it is one of the weakest and least easily angered of serpents; for in killing the ارقم and the جانّ one fears the punishment of the جِنّ on those who kill them.

Or, applied to a serpent, the same as أَرْقَشُ.

Or the male serpent. Ibn-Habeeb: the female is not so called, nor is she called رَقْمَآءُ, but رَقْشَآءُ; when the adjective is used one says أَرْقَشُ, while أَرْقَمُ is used as a noun.

The plural is أَرَاقِمُ, a plural proper to nouns, because the character of a noun predominates in it.
