He slept. Some say it means specially by night, but it correctly means sleeping by night or by day, as verse 17 of chapter 18 of the Qur'ān shows; the claim that it means specially by night is weak.

According to Lth, رُقُودٌ is by night and رُقَادٌ by day; but the Arabs used both words of sleeping by night and by day.
