Nounرُقْبَى1 sense

Core sense — giving property so that it goes to the survivor of the two partiesgenerated

1my house is yours as such a grantدَارِى لَكَ رُقْبَى

One's giving to another person a possession, such as a house, land, and the like, on the condition that, whichever of them dies, the property shall revert to the giver's heirs: so called because each of them looks for the death of the other.

Or one's assigning a dwelling to another person to live in, and, when he dies, to another.

Or one's saying to a man: If you die before me, my dwelling, or my land, which I give to you, shall revert to me; and if I die before you, it shall be yours — so called for the reason just given.

It also means the property so given. See form 4, in three places.

The act so named is forbidden in a tradition, which rules that the property so given belongs to the giver's heirs.

According to the Imám Aboo-Haneefeh and Mohammad it is not a هِبَة; according to Aboo-Yoosuf it is a هِبَة, like the عُمْرَى, but none of the lawyers of El-'Irák says so; the Málikees forbid it absolutely.

That is, as a رقبى; from المُرَاقَبَةُ, because each of the two persons looks for the death of the other.

Core sense — a woman whose offspring do not live; one having no children; a poor old mangenerated

1figurative · مجاز

A woman of whom no offspring lives, or remains, and who looks for the death of her offspring, or of her husband, apparently so that she may have offspring by another; and likewise applied to a man: because he, or she, looks for the death of the child, in fear for it.

Likewise a she-camel of which no offspring lives.

Or one who has no offspring; or one who has not sent any of his children before him to Paradise, by its dying in infancy. A'Obeyd says that this is the meaning in the classical language of the Arabs, and that it relates only to the loss of children.

Or one who has had no child die in infancy; or one who has had children and has died without sending any of them before him to Paradise, by its dying in infancy.

So in the explanations of two traditions, each beginning with الرَّقُوبُ, in the “Jámi' es-Sagheer” of Es-Suyootee.

shāhid
وَرِثْتُهُ عَنْ عَمَّةٍ رَقُوبِ

Nounرَقِيبٌ9 senses · 1 main

Core sense — a watcher, or waiter; a guardian, or keeper; the third gaming-arrowgenerated

1

A looker, watcher, or waiter, in expectation of a person or thing. Of the measure فَعِيلٌ in the sense of the measure فَاعِلٌ; plural رُقَبَآءُ.

1.1

A guarder, guardian, keeper, or preserver; a guard of a people; one stationed on a high place to keep watch; a spy, or scout, of an army; a watcher, or observer.

1.2the Guardian, Keeper, Watcher, or Observer, from whom nothing is hiddenالرّقِيبُ

A name applied to God.

1.3

Also the أَمِين of the players at the game called المَيْسِر; or the one entrusted with the supervision of the ضَرِيب, the shuffler of the arrows; or the man who stands behind the حُرْضَة in that game. The meanings of all these explanations are said to be the same. Plural as above.

1.4figurative · مجاز — inferred

And the third of the arrows used in that game: it is one of the seven arrows to which lots, or portions, belong. Some call it الضَّرِيبُ.

The arrows are ten in number: the first is الفَذُّ, which has one notch and one portion; the second, التَّوْءَمُ, which has two notches and two portions; the third, الرَّقِيبُ, which has three notches and three portions; the fourth, الحِلْسُ or الحَلِسُ, which has four notches [and four portions]; the fifth, النَّافِسُ, which has five notches [and five portions]; the sixth, المُسْبِلُ, which has six notches [and six portions]; and the seventh, المُعَلَّى, the highest of all, which has seven notches and seven portions.

Those to which no portions belong are السَّفِيحُ, المَنِيحُ, and الوَغْدُ.

A poet says:

shāhid
إِذَا قَسَمَ الهَوَى أَعْشَارَ قَلْبِىفَسَهْمَاكِ المُعَلَّى وَالرَّقِيبُ

— when love divides the tenths of my heart, your two arrows will be the mo'allà and the rakeeb. By the سَهْمَانِ, which properly means two arrows, and hence two portions gained by two gaming-arrows, and then any two portions, he means her eyes; and since the معلّى has seven portions and the رقيب has three, the سهمان would gain the whole of his heart.

See also a verse cited under عُشْرٌ.

1.5figurative · مجازthe star, or asterism, that sets with the rising of another star, or asterismرَقِيبُ النَّجْمِ

For example, the رقيب of الثُّرَيَّا is الإِكْلِيلُ, and the former is the رقيب of the latter: when the latter rises at nightfall, the former sets.

Or رَقِيبٌ means the star, or asterism, that watches in the east the star, or asterism, setting in the west.

Or any one of the Mansions of the Moon is the رقيب of another: whenever one of them rises, another sets. See مَنَازِلُ القَمَرِ in art. نزل, and see also نَوْءٌ.

And الرَّقِيبُ is a star, or asterism, among those believed to be the givers of rain, that watches another star, or asterism. It was apparently applied to الإِكْلِيلُ as being the رقيب of the most noted and most welcome of all the Mansions of the Moon, namely الثُّرَيَّا: see نَوْءٌ.

The رَقِيب of الثُّرَيَّا is also a name applied to الدَّبَرَانُ, the Hyades — or the five chief stars of the Hyades, or the brightest star among them, in Taurus — because it follows it.

And العَيُّوقُ, Capella, is so called as being likened to the رقيب of the game called المَيْسِر.

One says لَاآتِيكَ أَوْ يَلْقَى الثُّرَيَّا رَقِيبُهَا: I will not come to you unless their رقيب meets the Pleiades.

1.6figurative · مجازexcellent, or most excellent, is the successor; such are you to your father and your ancestorsنِعْمَ الرَّقِيبُ أَنْتَ لِأَبِيكَ وَسَلَفِكَ

رَقِيبٌ also means a man's successor, from among his offspring and his عَشِيرَة, his kinsfolk, or his nearer relations by descent from the same ancestor.

Because the successor is like الدَّبَرَان to الثُّرَيَّا.

1.7figurative · مجاز — inferred

And the son of a paternal uncle.

Apparently because two male cousins on the father's side are often rivals, and watchers of each other, the son of a girl's paternal uncle being commonly preferred as her husband.
