It is said in the Ḥam p. 128 that this verb has been handed down but is not the preferred one; but on p. 276, that both are correct.

مُرَافَدَةٌ means the same as مُعَاوَنَةٌ.

I will not stand unless I am helped to do so—لَا أَقُومُ إِلَّا رَفْدًا

A gift; and so, apparently, مِرْفَدٌ or مَرْفَدٌ: a gratuity. Plural أَرْفَادٌ; and مَرَافِدُ is the plural of مِرْفَدٌ or مَرْفَدٌ.

المَرَافِدِ means the same.

the tribute shall be a gratuity bestowed according to men's natural desires—مِنِ ٱقْتِرَابَ السَّاعَةِ أَنْ يَكُونَ الفَىْءُ رِفْدًا

A large [drinking-cup, or bowl, of the kind called] قَدَح from which a guest is given to drink; this is the best-known meaning. IAar and Ibn-El-Mubárak give this form; El-Muärrij gives رَفْدٌ; and there are also مِرْفَدٌ and مَرْفَدٌ.

Zj assigns this meaning to مِرْفَدٌ. Or a large عُسّ, larger than the common عُسّ, which is a large قَدَح holding enough to satisfy the thirst of three men, or four, or more, and larger than the غَمَر.

Ibn-El-Mubárak: a قَدَح, of whatever size it be, according to some. In a قَدَح a she-camel is milked. El-Muärrij: a vessel in which one milks.

Meaning he was slain; a phrase like صَفِرَتْ وِطَابُهُ and كُفِئَتْ جَفْنَتُهُ; or he died.

such a one drew water with my bowls—مَدَّ فُلَانٌ بِأَرْفَادِى

Meaning such a one aided me, or assisted me. In my copy of the one work, بِاءِرْفَادِى, which I think a miscopying; in the other, بِارْفَادِى.

The term رِفَادَةٌ, used of the feeding of the pilgrims, is from رَفَدَهُ, meaning “he aided him by a gift” and the like. The first to perform this custom was Háshim Ibn-'Abd-Menáf.
