Core sense — foul, obscene speech about women; sexual intercoursegenerated
1
Said by some to be a simple noun, but by others to be a maṣdar.
Foul, immodest, obscene speech about women — this is the primary meaning; talk to women about intercourse; the speaking plainly of what should be hinted at, relating to intercourse; or allusion to intercourse.
I'Ab: foul, immodest, obscene speech addressed to women.
Also intercourse; kissing; amorous, enticing talk; and any other similar act of the kind that occurs in intercourse.
Or, with respect to the pudendum, it is intercourse; with respect to the tongue, the making of an appointment for intercourse; with respect to the eye, the making of a signal of a desire for intercourse.
Or it is a word taking in everything that a man desires of his wife.
In the Qur'ān 2:193, where it is forbidden during pilgrimage, it means intercourse; or speech that may be a means of leading to intercourse; or foul, immodest, obscene speech; or, according to Th, the removal of external impurities of the body, by such acts as paring the nails, plucking out the hair of the armpit, shaving the pubes, and the like.
[In the L and TA, Th's explanation is so given as to relate not to رَفَثٌ but to لَا رَفَثَ.]
And in the same, 2:183, where it is allowed in the night of fasting, it means intercourse; or the going in to one's wife, synonym إِفْضَآء; and so it is made transitive by means of إِلَى, like إِفْضَآء.
Qur’ān 2:197 approximate — somewhere between 2:191 and 2:223 Lane cites “Kur ii. 193”
Qur’ān 2:197 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
For Hajj are the months well known. If any one undertakes that duty therein, Let there be no obscenity, nor wickedness, nor wrangling in the Hajj. And whatever good ye do, (be sure) Allah knoweth it. And take a provision (With you) for the journey, but the best of provisions is right conduct. So fear Me, o ye that are wise.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
