he denied that El-Kumeyt was an authority.

[So termed as being supposed to be a trembling, or state of agitation, of the clouds, as is implied in the Ksh and in Bd's explanation of 2:18, where it is said to be from الاِرْتِعَاد; or as being a cause of trembling.]

Originally a maṣdar, and therefore it is said to have no plural; [but see what follows, where رُعُودٌ occurs, perhaps as its plural.]

According to I'Ab, الرَّعْدُ is the name of an angel who drives the clouds [with his voice] as a man drives camels with singing.

أَوْ كَصَيِّبٍ مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فِيهِ ظُلُمَـٰتٌ وَرَعْدٌ وَبَرْقٌ يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِم مِّنَ ٱلصَّوَٰعِقِ حَذَرَ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۚ وَٱللَّهُ مُحِيطٌۢ بِٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky: In it are zones of darkness, and thunder and lightning: They press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap, the while they are in terror of death. But Allah is ever round the rejecters of Faith!

13:13

وَيُسَبِّحُ ٱلرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِۦ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِۦ وَيُرْسِلُ ٱلصَّوَٰعِقَ فَيُصِيبُ بِهَا مَن يَشَآءُ وَهُمْ يُجَـٰدِلُونَ فِى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ شَدِيدُ ٱلْمِحَالِ

Nay, thunder repeateth His praises, and so do the angels, with awe: He flingeth the loud-voiced thunder-bolts, and therewith He striketh whomsoever He will.. yet these (are the men) who (dare to) dispute about Allah, with the strength of His power (supreme)!

A certain fish: when a man touches it, a numbness affects his hand and arm up to the shoulders, with a trembling, for as long as the fish stays alive. It is so called because whoever lays hold of it while it is alive trembles with a trembling he cannot restrain.

It is a trembling with coldness, or chilliness, intense numbness, tingling in the limbs, and heaviness, so that he has no power over himself and cannot lay hold of anything at all with his hand; the numbness rises by degrees to his upper arm, his shoulder-blade, and the whole of his side, when he touches the fish with the slightest touch in the shortest time. So says 'Abd-El-Lateef. [See “Abdollatiphi Hist. Aeg. Comp.” p. 82; and De Sacy's Translation and Notes.]

[That thunders much]. سَحَابَةٌ رَعَّادَةٌ signifies A cloud that thunders much: (TA:) but Ks says, “ We have not heard them say thus. ” (Lh, TA.) [Hence,] applied to a man, (S,) Loquacious; (S, K;) and so رَعَّادَةٌ [but in an intensive sense]. (TA.) [That is, reading صَلِفٍ or صَلَفٍ: Many a cloud lacking, or having little, rain, or often a lack, or scarcity, of rain, is there beneath the thundering cloud.]

A proverb, applied to a talkative man who has no good in him; or to a talkative man who speaks much of what he has not done; or to one who threatens and does not carry it out; or to a rich miser; or to one who praises himself much and has no good in him.
