Core sense — lying in wait; watching, or waiting, for somethinggenerated

1such a one fears an enemy lying in wait before him, and pursuers behind himفُلَانٌ يَخَافُ رَصَدًا مِنْ قُدَّامِهِ وَطَلَبًا مِنْ وَرَائِهِ

Sitting, or lying in wait, for one in the road, or way; or watching, or waiting, with لِشَىْءٍ, for a thing; or one lying in wait, or in a place of watching, or in a road or way, for the purpose of guarding.

Plural رَاصِدُونَ and رَصَدٌ, like خَدَمٌ as plural of خَادِمٌ, and حَرَسٌ of حَارِسٌ.

Or rather رَصَدٌ means the same as رَاصِدُونَ, or as مُرْتَصِدُونَ, which has the same meaning, and is an ism jamʿ, a word like حَرَسٌ and خَدَمٌ, used alike as singular and plural, masculine and feminine; and sometimes they said أَرْصَادٌ.

رَصَدَةٌ is also used as a plural of رَاصَِدٌ, as analogy requires; and رُصَّدٌ likewise appears to be a plural of the same.

By رَصَدًا in the Qur'ān 72, in the last verse but one, are meant watchers over an angel sent down with a revelation, in case one of the jinn should overhear the revelation and tell it to the diviners, who would tell it to other men, and so become equal to the prophets.
