the ship anchored, or lay at anchor, resting upon the anchorرَسَتِ السَّفِينَةُ

[The claim that this is figurative seems meant to indicate that the verbs above are properly used only of a ship, in the senses explained below; but I doubt that.]

Or the meaning is, in some instances, that the ship grounded: the lower part of the ship reached the bottom of the water, so that she remained stationary.

[and مَرْسًى, as shown below: see Form 4].

In some copies of the K [and of the S], عَلَى البَحْرِ is wrongly put for على الأَنْجَرِ [or على اللَّنْجَرِ].

maṣdarإِرْسَآءٌ

Core sense — he made it firm, or fixed; he anchored the shipgenerated

see Form 1, in two places.

4.2he made it (a thing) stationary, fixed, firm, or steadyارساهُ
he anchored the ship; he made the ship rest upon the anchorارسى السَّفِينَةَ

Maṣdar as above, and also مُرْسًى.

she is made fast by means of the anchorتُرْسَى بَالأَنْجَرِ
it makes the ship fast, so that she does not go onيُرْسِى السَّفِينَةَ
in the name of God be the making it to run and the making it to restبِسْمِ ٱللّٰهِ مُجْرَاهَا وَمُرْسَاهَا

Or the meaning is, in some instances, that he grounded the ship: he made the lower part of the ship reach the bottom of the water, so that she remained stationary.

Said of a ship.

Said of the anchor.

These are the words of the Kur [11:43], meaning إِجْرَاؤُهَا وَإِرْسَاؤُهَا. Aboo-Is-hāk: from أَجْرَيْتُ and أَرْسَيْتُ; or, its being made to run and its being made to rest, from أُجْرِيَتْ and أُرْسِيْتْ (so in another copy of the S).

Some say مَجْرَاهَا وَمَرْسَاهَا, meaning its running and its resting (Aboo-Is-hāk), from جَرَتْ and رَسَتْ.

Az says that the readers agree in pronouncing the م of مرساها with damm, but differ as to the م of مجراها, the Koofees pronouncing it with fet-h.

Aboo-Is-hāk: the latter reading may have the same meaning as the former; or the former reading may mean in the time, or the place, of making it run and of making it rest, and the latter reading in the time, or the place, of its running and of its resting, since in each case each noun may be a noun of time, a noun of place, or a maṣdar.

Some read وَمُرْسِيهَا مُجْرِيهَا, as adjectives applied to God, who makes it run and who makes it rest.

Zj: يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا in the Kur [7:186 and 79:42] means: they will ask you respecting the ساعة — when will it take place? [or when will be the time of its being made to take place?]; by the ساعة is meant the time in which all created beings will die.
