2.1

It is said in a tradition [about the giving of the poor-rate], إِلَّا مَنْ أَعْطَى فِى نَجْدَتِهَا وَرِسْلِهَا, which is explained in two different ways.

J says it is from رِسْلٌ in the sense first explained above, meaning straitness and plenty; that is: except him who gives when they are fat and goodly, when it is difficult, or hard, for their owner to give them forth, and when they are lean, or in a middling condition. A'Obeyd says the like, and that it is similar to the saying قَالَ فُلَانٌ كَذَا عَمَّا رِسْلِهِ, meaning: such a one said such a thing holding the saying in light estimation.

Others say that it is from رِسْلٌ, meaning 'milk', which A'Obeyd disallows.

IAth says that what is meant by نجدة is straitness and drought or barrenness or dearth, and by رسل plenty and abundance of herbage or the like; because رسل, that is, milk, is plentiful only when herbage is abundant. So the meaning is: except him who gives forth the due of God both in straitness and in plenty.

But the more probable explanation of كثير الرسل is El-'Odhree's, who says that it means much dispersed in search of pasture; for the tradition relates that the camels had died, in spite of their ability to endure drought — how then should the sheep or goats be safe, and increase so as to become numerous?

Core sense — a messenger, one sent with a message; an apostle of Godgenerated

1

The same as رِسَالَةٌ: see that word, in five places.

1.1one who has a message; that is, a messengerذُو رَسُولٍ

That is, ذُو رِسَالَةٍ; the same as مُرْسَلٌ, meaning one sent with a message; of the measure فَعُولٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولٌ [or rather مُفْعَلٌ].

Often it means an apostle of God; and with the article, ال, it is especially applied to Mohammad.

According to IAmb, its meaning in the proper language of the Arabs is one who carries on by consecutive stages the relating of the tidings of him who has sent him; taken from the phrase جَآءَتِ الإِبِلُ رَسَلًا, meaning 'the camels came following one another'.

I know and declare that Mohammad is the relater by consecutive stages of the tidings from Godأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللّٰه

This is the saying of the Muëdhdhin; or, as commonly understood: I testify that Mohammad is the apostle of God.

A رَسُول is also called مِرْسَالٌ, as being likened to the arrow so termed.

The plural of رَسُولٌ is رُسُلٌ, رُسْلٌ, and رُسَلَآءٌ, and also أَرْسُلٌ.

This last [is a plural of paucity, and] occurs in the saying of the Hudhalee:

shāhid 1
لَوْكَانَ فِى قَلْبِى كَقَدْرِ قُلَامَةٍحُبًا لِغَيْرِكِ قَدْ أَتَاهَا أَرْسُلِى

[Had there been in my heart as much as a nail-paring of love for another than you, my messengers (or, according to the TA, apparently, my messages) had come to her].

IJ says that he has given to رَسُولٌ this form of plural, which regularly belongs to feminines of this class of words (of four letters, the third being a letter of prolongation), such as أَتَانٌ, عَنَاقٌ and عُقَابٌ, because women are meant by it, as they are generally the persons required to serve in cases of this kind.

رَسُولٌ is applied without change to a male and a female, and to one [and to two] and to a plural number; sometimes, that is, it is allowable to apply it so. Hence the following.

truly we are the apostles of the Lord of the beings of the whole worldإِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ العَالَمِينَ
truly we are the two apostles of your Lordإِنَّا رَسُولَا رَبِّكَ

In the Qur'ān 26:15.

MF says that in chapter 20, verse 49, we find this, the dual form being used here; and Z says in the Ksh that in this instance it means the messengers, and therefore the dual is necessarily used, but in chapter 26 it means the message, and therefore it is allowable to use it alike, when applying it as an adjective, as singular, dual and plural.

Aboo-Is-hak the Grammarian says that the meaning here is إِنَّا رِسَالَةٌ رَبِّ العَالَمِينَ, that is, ذَوُو رِسالَةِ: truly we are those that have the message, and the like.

But رَسُولٌ, as meaning a messenger, is like عَدُوٌّ and صَديقٌ in being used alike as masculine and feminine, and singular [and dual] and plural.

Aboo-Dhu-eyb uses it in the sense of رُسُل in his saying:

shāhid 2
أَلِكْنِى إِلَيْهَا وَخَيْرُ الرَّسُولِ أَعْلَمُهُمْ بِنَوَاحِى الخَبَرْ

[Be my messenger to her: and the best of messengers is the one who knows best the bounds, or limits, of the tidings].

and the people of Noah, when they charged the apostles with lying, we drowned themوَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ لَمَّ كَذَّبُوا الرُّسُلَ أَغْرَقْنَاهُمْ

See form 4.

This saying is in the Qur'ān 25:39. Zj says it may mean that they charged Noah alone with lying, for one who charges a prophet with lying charges all the prophets with it, since they believe in God and in all his apostles; or the general term may here be used as meaning one, as when you say أَنْتَ مِمَّنْ يُنْفِقُ الدَّرَاهِمَ, meaning: you are of those who expend the kind of things termed دراهم.

Core sense — a message; a letter; a tract, or small treatisegenerated

1

This word, and رَسَالَةٌ, رَسُولٌ and رَسِيلٌ, all mean the same: a message; a letter [a communication sent from one person or party to another, oral or written]; nouns from أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ.

The plural of the first is رَسَائِلُ; and أَرْسُلٌ is the plural of رَسُولٌ in the sense of رِسَالَةٌ, and is of the feminine gender. [See the first of the two verses cited under رَسُولٌ.]

One says أَرْسَلْتُ فُلَانًا فِى رِسَالَةٍ and رَسُولًا أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ: see form 4.

A poet, El-Ash'ar El-Joafee, says:

shāhid 1
أَلَا أَبْلغْ أَبَا عَمْرٍو رَسُولًابِأَنِّى عَنْ فُتَاحَتِكُمْ غَنِىُّ

[Now deliver to Aboo-'Amr a message, saying that I am in no need of your judging]; or بَنِى عَمْرٍو [the sons of 'Amr]; he means عَنْ حُكْمكُمْ.

And hence the saying of Kutheiyir:

shāhid 2
لَقَدْ كَذَبَ الوَاشُونَ مَا بُحْتُ عِنْدَهُمْبِسِرٍّ وَلَا أَرْسَلْتُهُمْ بِرَسُولِ

[Assuredly the slanderers have lied: I revealed no secret in their presence, nor did I send them with a message]; or, as some relate the second hemistich:

shāhid 3
بِلَيْلَى وَلَا أَرْسَلْتُهُمْ بِرَسِيلِ

[that is, I revealed not the case of Leyla, nor did I send them with a message]; so cited by Th.

Qur’ānic occurrences رِسَالَة
5:67

O Messenger! proclaim the (message) which hath been sent to thee from thy Lord. If thou didst not, thou wouldst not have fulfilled and proclaimed His mission. And Allah will defend thee from men (who mean mischief). For Allah guideth not those who reject Faith.

6:124

When there comes to them a sign (from Allah), They say: "We shall not believe until we receive one (exactly) like those received by Allah's messengers." Allah knoweth best where (and how) to carry out His mission. Soon will the wicked be overtaken by humiliation before Allah, and a severe punishment, for all their plots.

7:79
فَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ لَقَدْ أَبْلَغْتُكُمْ رِسَالَةَ رَبِّى وَنَصَحْتُ لَكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُحِبُّونَ ٱلنَّـٰصِحِينَ

So Salih left them, saying: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the message for which I was sent by my Lord: I gave you good counsel, but ye love not good counsellors!"

7:144
قَالَ يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ إِنِّى ٱصْطَفَيْتُكَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ بِرِسَـٰلَـٰتِى وَبِكَلَـٰمِى فَخُذْ مَآ ءَاتَيْتُكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

(Allah) said: "O Moses! I have chosen thee above (other) men, by the mission I (have given thee) and the words I (have spoken to thee): take then the (revelation) which I give thee, and be of those who give thanks."

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.

1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredapplied to a tradition: one whose ascription is not traced up so as to reach its authorحَدِيثٌ

الأَحَادِيثُ المُرْسَلَةُ means the traditions that one relates on the authority of a تَابِعِىّ, tracing the ascription up to him without a break, where the تابعىّ says, 'The Apostle of God (May God bless and save him) said', without mentioning a صَحَابِىّ who heard it from the Apostle of God.

مَرَاسِيلُ is the [plural, or] ism jamʿ of مُرْسَلٌ used in this way [or rather used as a noun, or as an adjective in which the quality of a noun is predominant], as مَنَاكِيرُ is of مُنْكَرٌ.

1.2figurative · مجاز — inferred

In lexicology it means, like مُنْقَطِعٌ, that of which the series of transmitters is interrupted: as a word or the like handed down by IDrd on the authority of AZ [with whom he was not contemporary, without his mentioning the intermediate transmitters].

Such is not admitted as beyond question, because exactness is a condition of accepting what is transmitted, and the exactness of one who is not named is not known. So in the Mz, 4th نوع.
