Or it means more than سَدَّ [that is, he stopped it up by putting one thing upon another, as in building up a doorway or the like], since الرَّدْمُ is "that of which one part is put upon another".

It is a maṣdar and also a noun in its own right.

As a noun it is the same as سَدٌّ or سُدٌّ [meaning a thing coming between two other things and preventing passage from one to the other; an obstruction; a barrier; any building with which a place is blocked]. This meaning is wrongly assigned in the B to رَدَمٌ.

Or a thing of which one part is put upon another: a rampart, or fortified barrier.

It is larger than a سدّ, and is said to be from ثَوْبٌ مُرَدَّمٌ, meaning [a garment, or piece of cloth] having patches upon patches.

It also means anything having its parts put, and joined or sewed, one upon another. Plural رُدُومٌ.

The word for rampart here is السُّدُّ or السَّدُّ. "Us" means the people of the territory of the Muslims. Mentioned in the Qur'ān 18:94.

'Antarah says, at the opening of his muʿallaqah:

هَلْ غَادَرَ الشُّعَرَآءُ مِنْ مُتَرَدَّمِأَمْ هَلْ عَرَفْتَ الدَّارَ بَعْدَ تَوَهُّمِ

that is, [Have the poets left any deficiency to be supplied? or,] any discourse to be joined to other discourse?

The meaning is: they have come before me in saying, and have left no say for a sayer after them. Or: have the poets left any place to be patched, or pieced, which they have not patched, or pieced, and repaired? That is, the earlier poet has left the later nothing on which to mould his verses; poets have come before me and left me no place that I may patch, nor any place that I may repair.

He then turns aside and addresses himself: [Nay, but I have something to say:] have you known the abode of your beloved, 'Ableh, after your doubting about it? (EM pp. 219–220.)
