maṣdarرَجْوٌmuḍāriʿأَرْجُوهُ أَرْجِيهِ يَرْجَاهُ
Core sense — I hoped for him, or it; I feared it; he broke off from speakinggenerated
1.1I have not come to you except hoping for what is good—مَا أَتَيْتُكَ إِلَّا رَجَاوَةَ الخَيْرِ
or رُجُوٌّ and رَجَآءٌ (in the CK wrongly written with the short ا, that is, without the maddah and ء), or the last of these is a simple noun.
رَجَاوَةٌ and رَجَاةٌ, or رَجَآءَةٌ, or both, and مَرْجَاةٌ and رَجَّيْتُهُ, maṣdars تَرْجِيَةٌ and تَرَجَّيْتُهُ and اِرْتَجَيْتُهُ, all mean the same: I hoped for him, or it. This relates only to what is possible, and has the same meaning as أَمَلْتُهُ: see رَجَآءٌ below.
رَجَيْتُهُ, is a dialectal variant of رَجَوْتُهُ; and رَجِيَهُ, like رَضِيَهُ, is a dialectal variant of رَجَاهُ, muḍāriʿ يَرْجُوهُ, according to Lth. Az rejects this, because he heard it on no authority but that of Lth; but ISd mentions it too.
No regard is to be paid to the assertion of Lth that the saying فَعَلْتُ رَجَاةَ كَذَا, I did a thing hoping for such a thing, is a mistake, and that the correct word is only رَجَآءَ; for رَجَاةٌ occurs in a tradition and in the poetry of the Arabs.
1.1.1figurative · مجازI did not fear you—مَا رَجَوْتُكَ
Sometimes رَجْوٌ or رُجُوٌّ has the meaning of خَوْفٌ, because one who hopes fears that he may not get what he hopes for; and so does رَجَآءٌ, but only when a negative particle goes with it.
But you do not say رَجَوْتُكَ meaning I feared you.
What is the matter with you, that you will not fear the greatness, or majesty, of God?—مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلّٰهِ وَقَارًا
Kur 71:12. Or the meaning is: that you will not hope for God's magnifying of the man who serves Him and obeys Him? Or: that you will not believe in greatness, or majesty, belonging to God, so that you may fear disobeying Him? Another instance occurs in a verse of Aboo-Dhu-eyb, cited in art. خلف, under form 3.
he feared him, or it—ارتجاهُ
Apparently only when preceded by a negative particle, as in the examples cited in the TA; and this use is figurative.
According to Lth, رَجْوٌ is also synonymous with مُبَالَاةٌ, and مَا أَرْجُو means مَا أُبَالِى, I do not care, mind, or heed; but Az rejects this.
1.2he broke off, or ceased, from speaking—رَجِىَ
he became unable to speak—رُجِىَ عَلَيْهِ
Apparently through inability. Or, according to Az, he became confused and could not see what to do; or, as Fr says, he wanted to speak and could not.
Like عُنِىَ.
