, aor. رَتُقَ (S, L, Msb) and رَتِقَ , (L,) inf. n. رَتْقٌ , (S, M, L, Msb, K,) He closed up, (M, Msb, TA,) and repaired, (M, TA,) a rent: (S, M, Msb, TA:) [he sewed up, or together: see رِتَاقٌ :] الرَّتْقُ is the contr. of الفَتْقُ . (S, K.) [Hence,] one says, رَتَقَ فَتْقَهُمْ , meaning [He closed up the breach that was between them; he reconciled them; or] he reformed, or amended, the circumstances subsisting between them. This is in the Qur’ān 21:31, and is from الرَّتْقُ as the opposite of الفَتْقُ.

According to Ibn-ʿArafeh, it means: they were closed up, with no gap in them, and we rent them by the rain and by the plants.

According to Az, it means: they were a heaven closed up and an earth closed up, and we rent them into seven heavens and seven earths.

Lth says that the heavens were closed up, no rain coming down from them, and the earth was closed up, with no fissure in it, until God rent them by the rain and the plants.

Zj says that رَتْقًا stands for ذَوَاتَىْ رَتْقٍ, and that the heaven and the earth were joined together, and God rent them by the air, which He placed between them. This is discussed under فتق.

Some read رَتَقًا for شَيْئًا رَتَقًا, meaning مَرْتُوقًا.

أَوَلَمْ يَرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَـٰهُمَا ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ حَىٍّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?

i. q. مَرْتُوقٌ [and مَرْتُوقَةٌ , &c., being originally an inf. n.; i. e. Closed up, and repaired; applied to a rent; and so رَتَقٌ ]. Nounرَتْقَآءُ1 sense

Core sense — a woman having the vaginal passage closed upgenerated

Applied to a woman or a girl, [and also to a she-camel (see the last sentence of form 1),] having the passage of the vagina closed up.

Or having no opening except the مَبَال [or urinary passage].

Or having the فَرْج so drawn together that the ذَكَر can hardly pass, or cannot pass at all.
