1figurative · مجازgain, or profit; increase obtained in trafficرَبَحٌ

Also رَبَاحٌ; all of these were originally maṣdars.

It is the excess, or surplus, obtained above the capital spent, and for that reason it is also called شِفٌّ. So the word is explained in the commentaries at 2:15.

Core sense — fat; horses and camels brought from one place to another for salegenerated

1

See the preceding entry.

1.1

Horses and camels that are brought from one place to another for sale.

1.2

Fat, used as a noun.

Khufāf Ibn-Nudbeh says: [as though meaning: They entertained their guests with fat, and the tribe lived on the abundant remains of it, by means of tawny-coloured gaming-arrows with which the lots were divided that decided who should provide the entertainment.]

shāhid
قَرَوْا أَضْيَافَهُمْ رَبَحًا بِبُحٍّيعِيشُ بِفَضْلِهِنَّ الحَىُّ سُمْرِ

But this does not suit the affixed pronoun, which relates to ربحا; so here, some say, it means young weaned camels, as an ism jamʿ, its singular being رَابِحٌ, just as the singular of حَرَسٌ is حَارِسٌ and that of خَادِمٌ خَدَمٌ; or it means a single young weaned camel, like رُبَحٌ, and its plural is رِبَاحٌ.

Or it means here the gain, or profit, obtained by means of the game called الَميْسِر.

Core sense — a certain small animal resembling the catgenerated

1

See رِبْحٌ, in two places.

2

A certain small animal, resembling the cat; so in many copies.

F notes that J says الرَّبَاحُ دُوَيْبَّةٌ يُجْلَبُ مِنْهَا الكَافُورُ, and that بَلَدٌ has been put in some copies as a correction for دويبّة, but that both readings are wrong: for يجلب we find, in the handwriting of Aboo-Zekereeyà and of Aboo-Sahl, يُحْلَبُ, with the ح unpointed; and the substitution of بلد for دويبَة was made by IKtt.

In the copies we also find مِنْهُ instead of مِنْهَا; and IB says that in J's original copy, in his own handwriting, the passage runs: الرَّبَاحُ أَيْضًا دُوَيْبَّةٌ كَالسِّنَّورِ يُجْلَبُ مِنْهُ الكَافُورُ.

[But in five copies, between السنّور and يجلب, occur the words وَالرَّبَاحُ أَيْضًا بَلَدٌ or بَلْدَةٌ or ٱسْمُ بَلَدٍ; and it seems most likely that J meant to insert these or similar words, and so wrote مِنْهُ instead of مِنْهَا, meaning that رباح is the name of a certain small animal resembling the cat, and that الرباح is also the name of a country or town from which camphor is brought; a marginal note in one copy says that this country or town is in India.]
