muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُرَأَُرَأََيَرَافُmaṣdarرَأْفَةٌ رَوْفٌ
Core sense — he pitied him, he had compassion on himgenerated
1.1
Said of God, and of a man: he pitied him, or had compassion on him; or he pitied him tenderly, or in the utmost degree.
also رَأَفَ; and رَئِفَ. The maṣdars are رَأْفَةٌ, رَآفَةٌ, رَأَفٌ and رَأْفٌ.
The first and second are maṣdars of رَؤُفَ [or the first is of رَأَفَ]; the third is the maṣdar of رَئِفَ, and the fourth of رَأَفَ.
رَأَفْةٌ means the same as رَحْمَةٌ; or it denotes a more special and more tender affection than رَحْمَةٌ, or the utmost degree of it, or the most tender kind of it.
رَافَ [in the CK رَأَفَ, as before, and in Freytag's Lexicon رَاءَفَ] and رَاوَفَ mean the same. [The right reading here appears to be رَافَ, since the K says in art. روف that رَافَ, is a dialectal variant of رَأَفَ, muḍāriʿ يَرْأَفُ; and رَاوَفَ is doubtful, as it is not mentioned there.]
Or رَافَ, means سَكَنَ [he, or it, became still, and the like]; and رَأَفَ is a dialectal variant of it with that meaning, and is not from رَؤُوفٌ, which means the same as رَحِيمٌ; so in the article روف.
