muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarذَهْلٌ ذُهُولٌ
Core sense — he forgot it, he neglected it, he was unmindful of itgenerated
1.1he forgot it, or neglected it; he was unmindful of it, or neglected it intentionally—ذَهِلَ
or both.
.
The form عَلَى عَهْدٍ is a mistake for على عَمْدٍ.
Or he forgot it because something diverted him; or he dismissed it from his mind intentionally and turned away from it.
ذُهُولٌ is neglecting a thing and dismissing it from the mind; or quitting a thing with confusion, perplexity, or distraction of mind, such as comes from fear and the like.
Er-Rāghib: being diverted from one's constant companion, or familiar, so as to forget him, and being content to give him up; or a diversion that brings grief and forgetfulness.
Hence, in the Qur'ān 22:2, يَوْمَ تَرَوْنَهَا تَذْهَلُ كُلُّ مُرْضِعَةٍ عَمَّا أَرْضَعَتٌ [On the day when you shall see it, every woman giving suck shall forget, or neglect, what she has suckled].
Lane cites “Bd in xxii. 2” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.2

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
