muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarذَهَابٌ ذَهَبٌ
Core sense — he went, he went away, he departed; he took it awaygenerated
1.1figurative · مجاز — inferred
He went, in any manner or at any pace; he went, or passed, along; he marched; he journeyed; he proceeded; he went, or passed, away; he departed. Said of a man, [and of a beast.]; maṣdar ذَهَابٌ, ذِهَابٌ, ذُهُوبٌ, and مَذْهَبٌ. Synonyms: مَشَى, سَارَ, مَرّ.
Also said of a mark, or trace, or the like, meaning it went away.
[And hence, it wasted away; it became consumed, destroyed, exhausted, spent, or expended.]
1.1.1he went to him, or it; he had recourse to him—ذَهَبَ إِلَيْهِ
[He went to Syria]—ذَهَبَ الشَّأْمَ
Here the verb is made transitive without a particle; for although الشأم is a specific adverbial noun of place, they treat it like a vague locality.
1.1.2he, or it, went from, quitted, relinquished, or left, him, or it—ذَهَبَ عَنْهُ
1.1.3figurative · مجازhe went away [into the country, or in the land]—ذَهَبَ فِىالأَرْضِ
But it often means he went out into the open country, or out of doors, to satisfy a need of nature; or simply, he voided his excrement.
Maṣdar ذَهَابٌ, ذُهُوبٌ, and مَذْهَبٌ.
1.1.4figurative · مجازhe went away with him, or it; and he made him, or it, to go away, pass away, or depart—ذَهَبَ بِهِ
اذهبهُ and اذهب بِهِ have the same meaning, but this last is rare; and so does ذهّبهُ, maṣdar تَذْهِيبٌ.
[All of these may likewise be rendered he removed, dispelled, put away, or banished it, properly and figuratively; and he made it cease; made an end of it; wasted, consumed, destroyed, exhausted, spent, or expended it; and these meanings may perhaps be intended by أَزَالَهُ, by which the first is explained in the A and K, as are also the second and third in the K.]
Or, according to some, when ذَهَبَ is made transitive by means of بِ, accompaniment is necessarily implied, but not otherwise; so that if you say ذَهَبَ بِهِ, the meaning is he went away with him, or it, that is, accompanying him, or it, [he took away, or carried off, him, or it;] but if you say اذهبهُ or ذهّبهُ, the meaning is he made him, or it, go away alone, without accompanying him, or it. This, however, does not agree with the phrase in the Qur'ān [2:16], ذَهَبَ ٱللّٰهُ بِنُورِهِمْ [though this may well be rendered God takes away their light].
where will you be taken away, and what will be done with you, if this is your intellect?—أَيْنَ يُذْهَبُ بِكَ
Or, according to Mtr, it is a saying of the people of Baghdād, addressed to one whom they charge with foolish judgment or opinion, meaning أَيْنَ يُذْهَبُ بِعَقْلِكَ [Where is your intellect taken away?].
his reason, or intellect, left him; he became bereft of his reason—ذَهَبَ عَقْلُهُ
his heart failed him, by reason of fear or the like—ذَهَبَ فُؤَادُهُ
[His flesh wasted away]—ذَهَبَ لَحْمُهُ
So under the article بحر and elsewhere.
the man became lost, or disappeared, among the people, or party—ذَهَبَ الرَّجُلُ فِى القَوْمِ
the water became lost, or disappeared, in the milk—ذَهَبَ المَآءَ فِى اللَّبَنِ
1.1.5figurative · مجاز — inferredit escaped his memory; he forgot it—ذَهَبَ عَلَيْهِ
Also: it was, or became, doubtful, confused, or vague, to him.
1.1.6figurative · مجاز — inferredhe pursued a good way, course, or manner of acting or conduct—ذَهَبَ مَذْهَبًا حَسَنًا
he formed, or held, an opinion, a persuasion, or a belief, respecting religion—ذَهَبَ فِى الدِّينِ مَذْهَبًا
Or, according to Es-Sarakustee, he introduced an innovation in religion.
he pursued the way, course, or manner of acting of such a one—ذَهَبَ مَذْهَبَ فُلَانٍ
he pursued his way, course, or manner of acting—ذَهَبَ لِذَهْبِهِ
he pursued his way, course, or manner of acting—لِمَذْهَبِهِ
he took to, or held, a belief, a creed, a persuasion, a doctrine, an opinion, or a body of tenets—ذَهَبَ إِلَى مَذْهَبٍ
such a one takes to, or holds, the belief, doctrine, or opinion of Aboo-Ḥaneefeh—فُلَانٌ يَذْهَبُ إِلَى قَوْلِ أَبِى حَنِيفَةَ
he held, or was of opinion, that the thing, or affair, was so—ذَهَبَ إِلَى أَنَّ الأَمْرَ كَذَا
he treated a word, or expression, in his use of it, as equivalent to another word, or expression—ذَهَبَ بِلَفْظٍ إِلَىلَفْظٍ آخَرَ
As, for instance, when one makes a feminine noun masculine because it means the same as a noun that is masculine, or makes a verb transitive by a certain particle because it means the same as a verb transitive by that same particle. It also means: he regarded a word, or expression, as etymologically relating, or traceable, to another word, or expression.
he used a word, or expression, as relating to such a meaning, or as meaning such a thing—ذَهَبَ بِهِ إِلَى مَعْنَى كَذَا
1.1.7figurative · مجاز — inferred[He tried every way, or did his utmost, in seeking the thing]—ذَهَبَ فِى طَلَبِ الشَّىْءِ كُلَّ مَذْهَبٍ
So under the article موت.
[It attained the utmost degree of softness]—ذَهَبَ فِىاللِّينِ كُلَّ مَذْهَبٍ
Said of the skin.
1.1.8figurative · مجاز — inferredapply yourself to your own affairs; occupy yourself with them—اِذْهَبْ إِلَيْكَ
Given in the T, and in the K under إِلَى.
1.1.9figurative · مجاز — inferred[He inclined to his father in likeness; he resembled him, or had a natural likeness to him]—ذَهَبَ إِلَى أَبِيهِ فِى الشَّبَهِ
The same as نَزَعَ; so in the S, under نزع.
1.2he (a man) saw gold in the mine, and his reason left him—ذَهِبَ
maṣdar ذَهَبٌ and ذِهِبَ, with two kesrehs, of the dialect of Temeem, held by AM to be a variation generally allowable in a verb whose middle radical letter is a throat-letter with kesreh.
Said of one who comes suddenly, in the mine, upon much gold: his eyes become so dazzled that he does not close or move the lids, or so confused that he does not see, because of the greatness of it in his eye.
It is derived from ذَهَبٌ; and the adjective applied to a man in this case is ذَهِبٌ.

(MF, TA.) [Hence,] one says, أَيْنَ يُذْهَبُ بِكَ , which may mean Where, or whither, wilt thou be taken away, and what will be done with thee and made to come to pass with thee, if this be thine intellect? or, accord. to Mtr, it is a saying of the people of Baghdád, addressed to him whom they charge with foolish judgment or opinion, as meaning أَيْنَ يُذْهَبُ بِعَقْلِكَ [Where, or whither, is thine intellect taken away?].
