maṣdarتَذْلِيلٌ

Core sense — he made it easy, tractable, or submissive; he subdued, or tamed, itgenerated

2.1

. He made a man, or a beast such as a horse and the like, easy, tractable, submissive, or manageable.

Said of a man, this may be rendered: he brought him into subjection, or he subdued him. Said of a beast: he broke, or trained, it. Said of any animal: he tamed it.

2.1.1figurative · مجاز — inferred

Hence: he beat, or trod, a road, so as to make it even, or easy to travel, or to walk or ride upon. See ذَلِيلٌ.

2.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe made an affair easy for himذلّل لَهُ أَمْرًا

Synonymous with رَوَّضَهُ and سَوَّسَهُ. Mentioned in art. سوس.

2.1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredthe bunches of the grape-vine were made to hang downذِلِّلَ الكَرْمُ

[So that they might be easily plucked.] Or: they were evenly disposed, for the same purpose; synonymous with سُوِّيَتْ. According to AHn, التَّذْلِيلُ means the disposing of the bunches of the grape-vine evenly, and making them hang down.

the bunches being evenly disposed and made to hang downوَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوفُهَا
the putting of the raceme of a palm-tree upon the branch so that it may support itالتَّذْلِيلُ

In the Qur'ān 76:14: exposed to be plucked. Or: being well disposed, and made near. Or, Ibn-'Arafeh: being within the reach of anyone who seeks them. Or: being easy to reach for those who will pluck them, in whatever way they wish. According to Mujáhid, it means that if a man stands the bunch rises to him, and if he sits it hangs down to him.

Or تَذْلِيلُ العُذُوقِ, as practised in the present day, is the trimmer's straightening and fertilizing the racemes of the palm-tree before the usual time, when they come out from the spathes that covered them, these having split open and disclosed them; by this he makes them hang out from among the branches and prickles, so that the fruit is easily plucked when it ripens. [See also مُذَلَّلٌ.]

Hence it is said in the K that ذُلِّلَ النَّخْلُ means وُضِعَ عِذْقُهَا عَلَى الجَرِيدَةِ لِتَحْمِلَهُ; the explanation should be وُضِعَتْ عُذُوقُهَا عَلَى الجَرِيدِ لِتَحْمِلَهَا, that is, the palm-trees had their racemes put upon the branches so that these might support them.

1[Somewhat of submissiveness is most preservative of the family and the property]بَعْضُ الذِّلِّ أَبْقَى لِلْأَهْلِ وَالمَالِ

Easiness, tractableness, submissiveness, or manageableness; and so ذُلٌّ.

Or الذُّلُّ أَبْقَى لِلْأَهْلِ وَالمَالِ, as it occurs in a tradition of Ibn-Ez-Zubeyr; meaning that the abjectness that comes upon a man when he bears patiently an injury done to him is most preservative of him, and of his family and his property.

1.1[And make soft to them, your two parents, the side of gentleness; that is, treat them with gentleness]وَٱخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ الذُّلِّ

Also gentleness; and mercy; and so ذُلٌّ.

Or الذِّلِّ, in the Qur'ān 17:25. The former is the common reading; or the latter means easiness, tractableness, or submissiveness.

Er-Rāghib says that الذُّلُّ is a consequence of subjection, while الذِّلُّ is what comes after refractoriness. So the phrase means, according to the former reading, be gentle like one who is subjected to them; and according to the latter reading, be gentle and tractable, or submissive, to them.

Core sense — the lower, or lowest, part of a long shirt, next the groundgenerated

1

Singular of ذَلَاذِلُ, which means the lower, or lowest, parts of a shirt, or of a long shirt, those next the ground.

IAar says that the singular is ذُلَذِلٌ and ذِلْذِلَةٌ as well; and they are also called ذَنَاذِنُ, plural of ذِنْذِنٌ and دَنَادِنُ.

Or ذُلْذُلٌ, ذِلْذِلٌ, ذِلْذِلَةٌ, ذُلَذِلٌ, and ذُلَذِلَةٌ all mean the lower, or lowest, parts of a long shirt when it dangles and becomes old and worn out; and so ذَلَاذِلُ, or rather this last is the plural of all the foregoing words.

ذَلَذِلُ and ذَلَذِلَةٌ mean the same [in some copies of the K, erroneously, ذَلْذَل, or ذَلْذُل and ذَلْذَلَة]; or rather the first of these two is a contraction of the plural ذَلَاذِلُ, and the second is the same contracted plural with the addition of ة.

1

1.1figurative · مجاز — inferred

Also, applied to palm-trees: having its fruit bent down so that it may be easily gathered. See also its verb, Form 2.

So in the following verse of Imra-el-Keys:

shāhid
وَكَشْحٍ لَطِيفٍ كَالجَدِيلِ مُخَصَّرٍوَسَاقٍ كَأُنْبُوبِ السَّقِىِّ المُذَلَّلِ

— meaning: and a waist slender like a camel's nose-rein of twisted leather, thin; and a shank resembling, in the clearness of its colour, the stalk (literally, the internodal portion) of the papyrus growing among irrigated palm-trees whose racemes are bent down by the abundance of their fruit, so that their branches overshade these papyrus-plants.

Or, according to some: and a shank resembling the stalk of the irrigated papyrus that is bent down by saturation. (EM pages 28 and 29.)

As says that it means سَاقٍ كَأُنْبُوبِ بَرْدِىٍّ بَيْنَ هٰذَا النَّخْلِ المُذَّلَلِ, agreeing with the first explanation.

AO says that سَقِىّ means watered naturally, without anyone having to take trouble to water it.

IAar explained المُذَلَّل as meaning having the way of the water to it made easy.

Some say that by السَّقِىّ is meant the tender, white stalk of the بَرْدِىّ.
