Form 1ذَرَأَ5 senses · 2 main
muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarذَرْءٌ ذَرَأٌ

Core sense — he (God) created; he multiplied; he sowed land; his hair became hoarygenerated

1.1[And] we have created [for Hell many of the jinn, or genii, and of mankind]وَلَقَدْ ذَرَأْنَا لِجَهَنَّمَ كَثِيرًا مِنَ ٱلْجِنِّ وَ ٱلْإِنْسِ

He (God) created. Synonymous with خَلَقَ; الخَلْقَ [the creation; i.e. the things that are created].

In the Qur'ān 7:178.

1.1.1He multiplies you by itيَذْرَؤُكُمْ فِيهِ

In the Qur'ān 42:9; that is, by making you, and the cattle, pairs, males and females. So says Zj, and Fr says the like; this is a correct explanation.

He multiplied, or made numerous.

1.1.2he sowed landذَرَا

The verb of this article has this meaning too, but the form given here is said to be the more chaste.

1.2His teeth fell out from his mouthذَرَأَ فُوهُ

ذَرَا and ذَرَى, without ء, have the same meaning; the form without ء is said to be the most chaste.

ذَرَأَ, with ء, is said to be of weak authority, or a mispronunciation.

1.2.1His hair became white, or hoary, in the fore part of his headذَرِئَ

Also written ذَرِئَ شَعَرَهُ. Also ذَرَأَ, and ذَرُؤَ (Ktr).

Or he had whiteness mixed with blackness in the hair of his head; or his hair became white, or hoary; or he began to become white, or hoary, in the fore part of his head, or in the upper part of each side of the head.

The adjective is أَذْرَأُ, feminine ذَرْآءٌ. In some copies of the K, ذَرْأَى is wrongly put for ذَرْآءُ.

7:179

Many are the Jinns and men we have made for Hell: They have hearts wherewith they understand not, eyes wherewith they see not, and ears wherewith they hear not. They are like cattle,- nay more misguided: for they are heedless (of warning).

16:13
وَمَا ذَرَأَ لَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُخْتَلِفًا أَلْوَٰنُهُۥٓ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَذَّكَّرُونَ

And the things on this earth which He has multiplied in varying colours (and qualities): verily in this is a sign for men who celebrate the praises of Allah (in gratitude).

23:79
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى ذَرَأَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

And He has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered back.

42:11

(He is) the Creator of the heavens and the earth: He has made for you pairs from among yourselves, and pairs among cattle: by this means does He multiply you: there is nothing whatever like unto Him, and He is the One that hears and sees (all things).

67:24
قُلْ هُوَ ٱلَّذِى ذَرَأَكُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

Say: "It is He Who has multiplied you through the earth, and to Him shall ye be gathered together."

Nounذَرْءٌ5 senses · 3 main

Core sense — the act of creating; the number of one's offspring; somewhat, a littlegenerated

1

The act of creating; maṣdar of ذَرَأَ.

1.1created [i.e. destined] for the fire [of Hell]ذَرْءُ النَّارِ

[Also used in the sense of the ism mafʿūl of that verb, and alike as singular and plural, because it is originally a maṣdar.]

For ذَرْءٌ لِلنَّارِ; related as occurring in a tradition of ʿOmar. Some relate the phrase as ذَرْوُ النَّارِ, meaning either “the children of the fire” or “to be scattered in the fire.”

1.2May God increase [the number of] your offspringأَنْمَىٱللّٰهُ ذَرْأَكَ

Also the number of one's offspring.

ذَرْوَكَ is said in the same way.

2[Somewhat of news, or information, reached me, or came to my knowledge]بَلَغَنِى ذَرْءٌ مِنْ خَبَرٍ
[somewhat of good]ذَرْءٌ مِنْ خَيْرٍ

Somewhat.

So ذرء is written by IAth; in some copies of the K it is ذُرْءٌ, with damm. Or ذَرْءٌ here means a little, and ذَرْوٌ is a dialectal variant of it. Also a little of what is said.

3[There is nothing intervening between us and him, or it]مَا بَيْنَنَا وَ بَيْنَهُ ذَرْءٌ

A thing coming in between as a separation or an obstacle.

The act of creating; inf. n. of ذَرَأَ . (S, M, Msb.) [And used in the sense of the pass. part. n. of that verb; and alike as sing. and pl. because originally an inf. n.] ذَرْءُ النَّارِ , (S, K, TA,) [for ذَرْءٌ لِلنَّارِ ,] related as occurring in a trad. (S, TA) of 'Omar, (TA,) means Created [i. e. destined] for the fire [of Hell]: (S, K, TA:) but as some relate it, the phrase is ذَرْوُ النَّارِ , meaning [either “ the children of the fire, ” agreeably with what next follows, or] “ to be scattered in the fire. ” (S, TA.) (M in art. ذرو .) Also A little of what is said. (TA.) Nounذُرِّيَّةٌ3 senses · 1 main

Core sense — children, or offspring; progenitors; womengenerated

1[Give me, from You, a good offspring]هَبْ لِى مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً

This word, and ذِرِّيَّةٌ and ذَرِّيَّةٌ [or ذَرِيَّةٌ, without a sheddeh to the ر, according to the Msb in the article ذر], is always pronounced by the Arabs without ء.

According to some it is from الذَّرْءُ, so says Th, the measure of the first being فُعُّولَةٌ or فُعِّيلَةٌ [so that it is originally ذُرُّوءَةٌ or ذُرِّيْئَةٌ], but the ء is dropped because the word is used so often.

According to others it is from الذَّرُّ, meaning “the act of scattering,” because God scattered the ذرّيّة upon the earth; and the measure is فُعْلِيَّةٌ or فُعُّولَةٌ. [If the latter,] the word was originally ذُرُّورَةٌ, the last ر being changed into ى in a way like the case of تَقَضَّتِ العُقَابِ [in which تَقَضَّضَت becomes تَقَضَّيَت and then تَقَضَّت, so that ذُرُّورَةٌ becomes ذُرُّويَةٌ and then ذُرِّيَّةٌ].

Children, or offspring, of a man — used as a singular also — or of men and of jinn, or genii. Plural [ذُرِّيَّاتٌ and sometimes] ذَرَارِىُّ.

In the Qur'ān 3:33.

And he put me among the little ones, or young onesفَجَعَلَنِى فِى الذُّرِّيَّةِ

In a tradition of Ibn-ʿOmar.

Qur’ān 3:35 approximate — somewhere between 3:11 and 3:49 Lane cites “Kur iii. 33”
1.1[We carried their progenitors in the laden ark]حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ المَشْحُونِ

In the Qur'ān 36:41.

It is also applied to mean progenitors.

1.2[Perform the pilgrimage with the women]حُجُّوا بِالذُّرِّيَّةِ

It is used also to mean women, because they are the sources of offspring, just as سَمَآءٌ is used to mean “rain.”

A saying of ʿOmar. [See his saying in full under رِبْقٌ.]

[ ذُرِّيَّاتٌ (see art. ذر ) and sometimes] ذَرَارِىُّ . (S.) Hence, هَبْ لِى مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً [in the Kur iii. 33, meaning Give me, from Thee, a good offspring]. (Mgh.) And in a trad. of Ibn-'Omar, فَجَعَلَنِى فِى الذُّرِّيَّةِ means And he put me among the little ones, or young ones. (Mgh.) It is also applied to signify Progenitors: as in the saying, in the Kur [xxxvi. 41], حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِى ٱلْفُلْكِ المَشْحُونِ [We carried their progenitors in the laden ark]. (T.)
