or this last is a simple noun and the maṣdar is ذَخْرٌ and اِدَّخَرَهُ, of the measure اِفْتَعَلَ, originally اِذْتَخَرَهُ, the ت being changed into د and the ذ being incorporated into it; some of the Arabs say اِذَّخَرَهُ, which is allowable, but the former is more common.

He hoarded it, treasured it, or laid it up for the future; he stored it away in secret; or he prepared it, or provided it, for a time of need. Or he chose it, or selected it, and took it for himself, or prepared it.

Some have made a distinction between ذخر and دخر, saying that the first relates to the world to come and the second to the present world; but this is a clear mistake.

Surely therein is a Sign for you if ye did believe;

Nounإِذْخِرٌ1 sense

Core sense — a kind of sweet rush, sweet-smelling, used for roofing houses and gravesgenerated

[A kind of sweet rush; juncus odoratus; or schœnanthum;] a certain well-known plant, or herb, resembling in form the كَوْلَان [or papyrus-plant], sweet-smelling, or of pungent smell, which becomes white when it dries; used for roofing houses, over the wood, and for graves.

It has a root hidden in the ground, slender, pungent in smell; and it is like the straight stalks of the كَوْلَان [or papyrus-plant], except that it is wider and smaller in the كُعُوب [which means either the joints or the parts between them]; and it has a fruit resembling the brooms of reeds, but more slender and smaller.

It is ground, and is an ingredient in perfumes.

It grows in rugged and in smooth ground, but seldom does more than one grow on the same spot; when it dries, it becomes white.

'Iyáḍ asserts that its ء is a radical letter, but this is a mistake.

The ism waḥda is إِذْخِرَةٌ, applied to a single plant, or to a single bundle of it.

[Freytag's reading of مُذَخَّرٌ for مُدَّخِرٌ or مُذَّخِرٌ, and his proposed emendation of المَنْقِىُّ for المُبْقِى, are clearly wrong: see ذَخَرَ مِنْ عَدْوِهِ above.]

Such is the مِسْوَاط, a horse "that will not give what he has without the whip".

The feminine is with ة.
