Synonym مُصَانَعَةٌ: making peace with another, or becoming reconciled with another; or pretending the opposite of, or something different from, what one keeps hidden in the mind.

The first of these words also means acting dishonestly, or dissembling; or it is the other word that has this meaning, while the first means striving to outwit, deceive, beguile, or circumvent, synonym مُوَارَبَةٌ.

دَاهَنْتُ means I hid, concealed, or covered, synonym وَارَيْتُ; but this is probably a miscopying for وَارَبْتُ, meaning I strove to outwit, deceive, or beguile. And أَدْهَنْتُ means I acted dishonestly, or dissembled.

إِدْهَانٌ is originally like تَدْهِينٌ, as stated above, but is used of treating with gentleness or blandishment, soothing, coaxing, wheedling, beguiling, or deluding, and of holding back from restraint or prohibition.

Or it originally meant anointing such a thing as a hide with oil or the like; and since such a thing is made soft to the touch, it was used figuratively for softness in the abstract, so that treating with gentleness, soothing, coaxing, beguiling, or deluding was called مُدَاهَنَةٌ. This figurative meaning then became well known and was treated as proper. Then the word — مداهنة or ادهان, or rather each of these words — was used figuratively for holding a thing in light, or mean, estimation, or in contempt: so in the 'Ináyeh.

They wish that you would try to conciliate them, and then they will try to conciliate you—وَدُّوالَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ

In the Kurʾān 68:9.

Or: that you would be soft, pliant, or gentle in your religion, and then they will be soft, pliant, or gentle. Or: that you would be gentle to them, and then they will be gentle to you. Or, according to Fr, that you would be an unbeliever, and they will be unbelievers.

Er-Rāghib: it has the meaning of an ism fāʿil, that is, yielding as much as one may anoint himself with. Or, as some say, it has the meaning of an ism mafʿūl, because she is anointed, as it were, with the milk, by reason of its scantiness; and this is the more likely, because the word does not take the affix ة.
