Nounدَهْرٌ12 senses · 1 main

Core sense — time; a long period of time; fortune, or fate; a lifelong customgenerated

1figurative · مجاز — inferredtime, from the beginning of the world to its endدَهَرٌ

The second form is either a dialectal variant, as the Basrees hold in cases of this kind, so that such cases are limited to what has actually been heard; or it is written and pronounced so because of the guttural letter, which makes it accord with a universal rule, as the Koofees hold.

But one does not say that الدَّهْرُ is four times, or four seasons, because applying it to a short period of time is figurative and an extension of its proper meaning.

Or it means the same as أَبَدٌ [a long unlimited time; an extended indivisible space of time; duration without end]; Khálid Ibn-Yezeed: it differs from زَمَانٌ in having no end.

Or a prolonged, or lengthened, term, syn. أَبَدٌ مَمْدُودٌ; in some copies of the K we find أَمَد in the place of ابد.

Plural of paucity أَدْهُرٌ, plural of multitude دُهُورٌ; both are said to be plurals of دَهْرٌ, and no other plurals are known for دَهَرٌ, the form أَدْهَارٌ not having been heard.

So Esh-Sháfi'ee, who gives حِينٌ in the same sense.

Er-Rāghib: this is the primary meaning.

Z: and any long period of time.

Er-Rāghib: it thus differs from زَمَانٌ, which is explained below.

And a portion of the longest period of time.

Or دَهْرٌ means, or also means, a time, or a space or period of time — syn. زَمَانٌ — whether long or short. Er-Rāghib: this is the proper meaning of زَمَانٌ, but not of دَهْرٌ.

we stayed at such a water a long time, or a timeأَقَمْنَا عَلَى مَآءِ كَذَا دَهْرًا
this pasture-land will suffice us a long time, or a timeهٰذَا المَرْعَى يَكْفِينَا دَهْرًا

And a division of the year; and a shorter period.

Az says: I have heard more than one of the Arabs say this.

And the period, or duration, of life; an age; the present state of existence; and a thousand years.

1.1a long time, or an age, passed over him, or itمَضَى عَلَيْهِ دَهْرٌ
long times, or ages, passed over him, or itدُهُورٌ
1.2that was in the time of God's creation of the starsكَانَ ذٰلِكَ دَهْرَ النَّجْمِ

That is, in the beginning of time; in ancient time.

1.3in the beginning of timeفِى أَوَّلِ الدَّهْرِ
1.4it remains for everيَبْقَى الدَّهْرَ
1.5I will not come to him, everلَا آتِيهِ الدَّهْرَ

See also دَاهِرٌ.

1.6he fasted ever, or alwaysصَامَ الدَّهْرَ

In the article اول and elsewhere; see also a tradition cited under آلَ in that article.

1.7fortune; fateالدَّهْرُ

Hence, because in one sense time brings about events, good and evil, the Arabs applied the word to fortune, or fate. They used to blame and revile it, and since doing so was in effect blaming and reviling God, by whom events are really brought to pass, Mohammad forbade it.

It is said in a tradition: لَا تَسُبُّوا ٱلدَّهْرَ فَإِنَّ ٱلدَّهْرَ هُوَ ٱللّٰهُ, or, by one reading, فَإِنَّ ٱللّٰهُ هُوَ ٱلدَّهْرُ. Some explain الدهر in the first clause as having a different meaning from the one it has in the second, while others give it the same meaning in both.

The meaning of the tradition is: do not revile [fortune, or] the Efficient of fortune, for the Efficient of fortune is God; or, by the second reading, for God is the Efficient of fortune.

Hence some reckon الدَّهْرُ as one of the names of God, but some disallow this, and some say it is allowable if it is meant to signify the Efficient of fortune.

1.8a husband prepared for the accidents, or calamities, of fortuneزَوْجُ دَهْرٍ

In the article بهر; see بَهْرٌ.

1.9an evil event or accident; a misfortune; a calamityدَهْرٌ

See also دَهَارِيرُ; and see form 1.

1.10my purpose, or intention, is not such a thingمَا دَهْرِى بِكَذَا
my desire, or the end I have in view, is not such a thingمَا دَهْرِى كَذَا

on this sense It also means a purpose, an intention, a desire, the scope or end that one has in view.

1.11figurative · مجازthat is not my custom, or habit, that lasts throughout my lifeمَا ذَاكَ بِدَهْرِى
my habit throughout life is not soمَا دَهْرِى بِكَذَا

on this sense It also means a custom, or habit, that is constant or permanent, or that lasts throughout life.
