A proverb used in urging a person to strive, or labour, for gain. It comes from a company gathering at a well and letting down their buckets so that each of them may take his share of the water, or what he can easily get of it. The meaning is: use means to acquire, as others do.

Core sense — a bucket, generally of leather, for drawing water; the sign of Aquarius; calamitygenerated

1

[A bucket, generally of leather;] a thing with which one draws water; a vessel with which one draws water from a well; well known; in Persian دول [that is, دُولْ, pronounced “dól”].

Masculine and feminine; sometimes masculine; mostly feminine, and this is the more approved usage.

Plural of paucity أَدْلٍ, of the measure أَفْعُلٌ [originally أَدْلُوٌ]; plurals of multitude دِلَآءٌ and دُلِىٌّ, which is of the measure فُعُولٌ originally, and دِلِىٌّ (omitted in the CK), and دُلِيَّةٌ, omitted here by the author of the K but mentioned by him in art. نحو, and دَلَا ([there said to be like عَلَى, but correctly دَلًا]).

Or دَلًا is synonymous with دِلَآءٌ, and its singular [or ism waḥda] is دَلَاةٌ, as that of فَلًا is فَلَاةٌ; [for] دَلَاةٌ is synonymous with دَلْوٌ. Or دَلَاةٌ means, or also means, a small دَلْو.

[But in the M, in one place, it seems to be stated that, according to some, دَلَاةٌ and دَلًا mean the same, in a plural sense: for, after the plurals of دَلْوٌ, it adds وَهِىَ الدَّلَاةُ وَالدَّلَا. I think, however, that whoever first said this meant that الدَّلَاةُ and الدَّلَا mean respectively the same as الدَّلْوُ and الدِّلَآءُ, and so on.]

[Hence the saying أَتْبِعِ الدَّلْوَ رِشَآءَهَا: see Form 4 in art. تبع.]

As masculine its diminutive is دُلَّىٌّ; as feminine, دُلَيَّةٌ. See also دَالِيَةٌ.

Core sense — a machine for irrigating land; land so irrigated; black grapesgenerated

1

A [water-wheel, or machine for irrigating land, of the kind called] مَنْجَنُون that is turned by an ox or a cow; and [the kind called] a نَاعُورَة, or the ناعورة, is turned by water.

Also a thing made of palm-leaves and pieces of wood, with which water is drawn [for irrigating land] by means of ropes, or cords, [apparently held and drawn at one end by a man and at the other end] tied to a tall palm-trunk. It is a bucket, or the like, with two pieces of wood placed across and tied together, the two arms of which are bound to the top [or rim] of the bucket; then one end of a rope is tied to it and the other end to a palm-trunk standing at the head of the well; and one waters land with it [apparently by drawing and swinging it up by means of another, or of the same, rope].

The word is of the measure فَاعِلَةٌ in the sense of the measure مَفْعُولَةٌ [because it is pulled up]. The plural is دَوَالٍ.

El-Fárábee differs from others, explaining it as meaning a مَنْجَنُون, and J follows him.

[A similar apparatus for irrigating land is used in the northern parts of Egypt, called قَطْوَة and دَلْو: it consists of a bowl-shaped bucket with four cords attached to its rim; two men, each holding two of the cords, throw up the water with it into a trough or trench.] According to Mtr, the دَالِيَة is a tall palm-trunk set up in the manner of the machine with which rice is beaten [to remove the husks], having at its head a large bowl with which water is drawn [for irrigating land].

1.1

Also land that is irrigated by means of the دَلْو [or bucket], or by the machine called مَنْجَنُون [mentioned above].

1.2

And the plural, دَوَالٍ: unripe dates hung up and eaten when they become ripe; hung fruit, according to Bd on 53:8. [But perhaps الثمر is there a mistranscription for التّمْرُ.]

Lane cites “Bd in liii. 8” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.3

Also (that is, the plural) black grapes, but not intensely black, the bunches of which are the largest of all bunches, looking like goats hung [upon the vines]; the berries are coarse, breaking in the mouth, and round, and are dried. [See also دَوَالِىُّ in art. دوال.]

1.4

[The singular also means a grape-vine itself, and a shoot of a grape-vine; plural as above.]
