Core sense — a guide, a director; an indication, an evidence, a proofgenerated

1O guide of those who are perplexed to that by which their perplexity will departيَا دَلِيلَ المُتَحَيِّرِينَ

Same as دَالٌّ: [a director; or] one who directs rightly to what is sought or desired; a guide; one who directs, or rightly directs, another; and a discoverer.

And a thing by which one is directed, or guided, or by which one is rightly directed; [an indication; an evidence; a proof; and an argument;] a sign set up for the knowledge of a thing indicated; anything by which a thing indicated is known, whether it relates to an object of sense or to the law, decisive or indecisive.

Hence smoke is called دَلِيلٌ عَلَى النَّارِ [an indication of fire].

دَلَالَةٌ is used in the sense of دَلِيلٌ, because a thing is called by the maṣdar of its verb; and so is دِلِّيلَى, though the K asserts that J said this heedlessly, because that last word is a maṣdar — for the maṣdar is used in the sense of the ism fāʿil, almost by a general rule, as it is also in the sense of the ism mafʿūl.

The plural of دَلِيلٌ is أَدِلَّآءُ [generally restricted to rational beings, or always so restricted,] and أَدِلَّةٌ [generally restricted to things by which one is directed, but properly a plural of paucity,] and, accord. to some, دَلَائِلُ; or this is a plural of دَلِيلَةٌ [feminine of دَلِيلٌ] or of دَلَالَةٌ, as is دَلَالَاتٌ.

A poet says:

shāhid
شَدُّوا المَطَى عَلَى دَلِيلٍ دَائِبِ

Some say this means بِدَلِيلٍ [i.e. they bound the saddles upon the camels for riding, with, or by means of, a toiling guide].

Or, accord. to IJ, a word may be left out, so that it stands for عَلَىدِلَالَةِ دَلِيلٍ, like the phrase سِرْ عَلَى ٱسْمِ ٱللّٰهِ, as though he said مُعْتَمِدِينَ عَلَى دَلِيلٍ دَائِبِ [relying upon a toiling guide].

Qur’ānic occurrences دَلِيل
25:45
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَيْفَ مَدَّ ٱلظِّلَّ وَلَوْ شَآءَ لَجَعَلَهُۥ سَاكِنًا ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَا ٱلشَّمْسَ عَلَيْهِ دَلِيلًا

Hast thou not turned thy vision to thy Lord?- How He doth prolong the shadow! If He willed, He could make it stationary! then do We make the sun its guide;

Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
