He poured it out, or poured it out violently: said of water and the like. Muḍāriʿ دَفُقَ and دَفِقَ, and by poetic license دَفَقٌ.

One should not say دَفَقَ المَآءُ; or, with and, it means the water poured out violently. As did not allow the verb to be used in an intransitive sense; the forms commonly used intransitively are 7 and 5.

According to Lth alone, that is, in the 'Eyn, دَفَقَ المآءُ and الدَّمْعُ, maṣdar دَفْقٌ and دُفُوقٌ, mean the water, and the tears, poured out at once; but Az did not allow this.

As said: I stopped at the tent of an Arab woman of the desert, and she told a daughter of hers to bring me the drinking-bowl; the girl brought me a bowl with milk in it and spilled it, and the mother said to her دَفَقَتْ مُهْجَتُكِ [may your blood, or heart's blood, be poured out; or, as appears from what is said above, the reading is probably دُفِقَتْ ].

[See also مُهْجَةٌ .]) One says also, of a river, or rivulet, and of a valley, دَفَقَ , [app. for دَفَقَ المَآءَ ,] meaning, It became full so that the water poured forth, or overflowed, or so that it poured forth the water, from its sides. That is, مَدْفُوقٌ, according to IKoot, because دَفَقَ is transitive only in the view of most of the leading lexicologists.

Like سِرٌّ كَاتِمْ meaning مَكْتُومٌ (IKoot), and عَارِفٌ meaning مَعْرُوفٌ, and عَاصِمٌ meaning مَعْصُومٌ (IKoot), in the way used by the people of El-Ḥijáz, who change the مَفْعُولٌ into فَاعِل when the word is used as an adjective.

Or it means ذُو دَفْقٍ [having a pouring out], according to Kh, Sb and Zj; and in the same way they say that سِرٌّ كَاتِمٌ means ذُو كِتْمَانٍ.

Or, according to Lth, in the 'Eyn, it means water pouring out at once.

It occurs in the Qur'ān 86:6, where دَافِق is said by Kh and Sb to mean مُنْدَفِق, that is, pouring out.

(Lth, TA.) مَآءٌ دَافِقٌ means مَدْفُوقٌ [i. e. Water poured forth or out, &c.]; (IKoot, S, Msb, K;) because دَفَقَ is trans. The first of the two is also applied to a pace, or rate of going, meaning quick, or swift.

Or, according to AO, it means أَقْصَى العَنَقِ, the utmost of the pace called العَنَق.

In my copies of the S this appears wrongly as العُنُقِ; in the TA it is written without any vowel signs, apparently because they were thought needless to any but a beginner in Arabic.

Aboo-Málik: the same as أَعْوَجُ, here meaning oblique, applied to a هِلَال [or new moon].

Aboo-Málik says that the هلال so called is better, or more auspicious, than the one called حَاقِنٌ, which means "having its two extremities raised, and its back lying down"; and AZ says the like.

Or ادفق, applied to a هلال, means erect ( مُسْتَوٍ [which must here mean nearly, not exactly, erect] ) and white, not turning sideways upon one of its two extremities; and this too is thought more auspicious than the one called حاقن. So in the "Nawádir."
