muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarدَسٌّ
Core sense — he hid it in the earth or beneath a thing; he anointed the camel with targenerated
1.1Or whether he shall bury it in the dust—أَمْ يَدُسُّهُ التُّرَابِ
maṣdar دَسٌّ and دَسِّيسَى, like خِصِّيصَى.
He hid it, or concealed it — anything — in the earth or dust, or beneath a thing; he buried it in the earth or dust, or beneath a thing; or he put it in, or inserted it, beneath; or, according to some, he put it in, or inserted it, with force, he thrust it in.
دَسَّسَهُ and دَسَّاهُ, in the latter of which one of the two س is changed into ى because the reduplication is disliked, mean the same as دَسَّهُ [or, probably, have an intensive meaning.]
In the Qur'ān 16:61. It means his female child, whom he buried alive; the pronoun agrees with the word ما, which comes earlier in the same verse.
he is successful who purifies his soul, and he is unsuccessful who conceals it—خَابَ مَنْ دَسَّاهَا قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ زَكَّاهَا وَقَدْ
In the Qur'ān 91:9 and 10. Here دسّاها stands for دَسَّسَهَا, like تَظَنَّيْتُ for تَظَنَّنْتُ, because a niggardly man hides where he lodges and hides his property, while a generous man makes his lodging on an open and high spot so that he is not hidden from guests and from those who wish to come to him.
Or the meaning is: he is successful who makes it (that is, his soul) pure and believing, and he is unsuccessful who slips it in among the good when he is not one of them. Or: [he is successful who makes it increase in grace by good works,] and he is unsuccessful who makes it vile and little by evil works. Or the second clause means: he is unsuccessful who hides it, and makes it obscure and of no reputation, by neglecting almsgiving and obedience [to God in other matters].
Or: the soul is unsuccessful that God renders obscure [so I render, here, دسّاها].
1.2he anointed the camel with tar, not thoroughly—دَسَّ البَعِيرَ
.
the camel was anointed with tar in certain parts—دُسَّ البَعِيرُ
[But only in the arm-pits, and the inner parts of the roots of the thighs or other similar parts.]
The parts called the مَسَاعِر [see دَجَلَ]; or the phrase means the camel became swollen in the parts so called.
Hence the proverb لَيْسَ الهَنْءُ بِالدَّسِّ, explained in art. هنأ.
So in art. هنأ. In the present article, instead of الهَنْءُ we find الهِنَآءُ, but the former is the better reading.

16:59
With shame does he hide himself from his people, because of the bad news he has had! Shall he retain it on (sufferance and) contempt, or bury it in the dust? Ah! what an evil (choice) they decide on?
Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
