Core sense — he knew the thing; he deceived, or outwitted, him; he combed his headgenerated
1.1I knew it—دَرَيْتُهُ
He knew the thing; the same as عَلِمَهُ [and so دَرَى بِالشَّىْءِ].
maṣdar دَرْىٌ, دِرْىٌ, دِرْيَةٌ, and دَرْيَةٌ, which Sb says is used not as a maṣdar of a single act but as denoting a state or condition; and, according to some copies, دُرْيَةٌ, and also دِرَايَةٌ, دَرَيَانٌ, دِرْيَانٌ, and دُرِىٌّ.
The meaning is that of عَلِمْتُهُ or عَلِمْتُ بِهِ, or it is more special than عَلِمْتُهُ: it is said to mean I knew it after doubting, as Aboo-'Alee says; or I knew it by a sort of artifice, cunning, or skill, or with painstaking together with artifice or skill; and for that reason دَرَى is not said of God.
I knew it—دَرَيْتُ بِهِ
A rájiz says, though this is an instance of the rough speech of the Arabs of the desert: [O God, I know not, but You are the knowing]
In Har, p. 24, it is cited as beginning with اَلّٰهُمَّ, and so as a prose saying ascribed to Mohammad, adduced by some to show that الدَّارِى is allowable as an adjective applied to God.
Or, as some relate it, لَا أَدْرِ, in which the ى is dropped because the phrase is used so often; like لَمْ أُبَلْ and لَمْ يَكُ, and like لَا يَأْلُ in the saying أَقْبَلَ بِضَرْبَهٍ لَا يَأْلُ [q. v. in art. الو].
[The saying لَا دَرَيْتُ وَلَا ٱئْتَليْتَ or أَلَيْتَ and the like is explained in the latter part of the first paragraph of art.
I do not know who of mankind he is—مَا أَدْرِى أَىُّ النَّاسِ هُوَ
IAar mentions the saying مَا تَدْرِى مَا دِرْيْتُهَا or دُرَيْتُهَا as meaning: you do not know (مَا تَعْلَمُ, which may also be rendered she does not know) what her knowledge is.
1.2he deceived, or outwitted, a man, or an animal of the chase—
.
he hid himself and deceived—اِدَّرَى
ادْراهُ in the CK is a mistake for ادّراهُ.
he hid himself and deceived—تدرّى
A rájiz says: [How do you see me winnowing the dust of the mine and deceiving Juml by looking at her while she is inadvertent, she also deceiving me by looking at me while I am inadvertent]
تَدَرَّى stands for تَتَدَرَّى.

1.3he scratched his head with the
.
he combed his head with the
See Ham p. 159, line 11; and see also ذَرَّىَ.
