maṣdar دَرْءٌ, دَرْأَةٌ, and درّأهُ — though this last probably has an intensive meaning. He pushed it, or thrust it away, or repelled it, or averted it, namely a thing; synonymous with دَفَعَهُ.

Also دَرَهَ, formed by substitution from the first, like هَرَاقَ from أَرَاقَ — see art. دره.

1.1.1

See form 5.

1.1.2he pushed back the hind girth of the camelدَرَأَ عَنِ البَعِيرِ الحَقَبَ

This is Sh's explanation; AM says the correct meaning is: he spread the hind girth upon the ground and made the camel lie down on it [in order that he might gird him].

he spread out, or laid flat, a thing on the groundدَرَأَ
1.1.3he supported the thing by the thing, made the one a support to the otherدَرَأَ الشَّىْءَ بِالشَّىْءَ

he came upon him suddenly with evil, or mischiefاندرأ عَلَيْهِ بِشَرٍّ

Vulgarly اندرى.

1.1.7figurative · مجاز — inferredit shone, or glistened, intensely, and its light spreadدَرَأَ

From دَرَأَ, meaning "he came, or came forth, unexpectedly". Said of a star. Some say the meaning is: it rose.

the fire gave light, shone, was bright, or shone brightlyدَرَأَتِ النَّارُ
1.2he (a camel) had the disease called غُدَّةدَرَأَ

.

That is, the plague, or pestilence, of camels, with a tumour in his back or in his نَحْر [the stabbing-place, in the uppermost part of the breast]; but in a female it is in the udder. Or: he had a tumour in his نَحْر.

The adjective applied to the male is دَارِئٌ, and, according to ISk, to the female as well, meaning attacked by the غُدَّة in her مَرَاق — thus, without teshdeed to the ق — which means the part of her throat where the water passes, or in her مَرَاقّ [the thin and soft parts of the belly], so that the swelling of the غُدَّة [the pestilential tumour] is visible; and this swelling is called دَرْءٌ.

3.1.1I was fearful, or cautious, of him; and I treated him with gentleness, soothed him, coaxed him, or cajoled himدَرَأْتُهُ

According to El-Ahmar, in [the exercise of] good disposition and in social dealings the word occurs both with and without ء, contrary to the assertion of A 'Obeyd, who says that in this case it is without ء.

[F says,] دَارَأْتُهُ is synonymous with دَارَيْتُهُ, دَافَعْتُهُ, and لَايَنْتُهُ [the second of which has a meaning explained above; the first and last mean I treated him with gentleness, soothed him, coaxed him, or wheedled him]; so the word carries two opposite meanings.

Also دَارَيْتُهُ in the same sense.

Az says: in my view the verb with ء means I was fearful, or cautious, of him, as AZ says; or of his evil, or mischief. And دَارَيْتُ means "I deceived, deluded, beguiled, circumvented, or outwitted", and so does دَرَيْتُ.

Core sense — they repelled one another in contention, they disagreedgenerated

6.1and you contended together about itفَٱدَّارَأْتُمْ فِيهَا

They repelled, or strove to repel, one another in contention or dispute, and disagreed.

In the Kur 2:67; because those who contend repel one another. Or: you repelled, or strove to repel, one another, each of you casting the slaughter upon his fellow.

1.1

Also a camel, or any other thing, behind which a man conceals himself from the wild animals, or from the objects of the chase, so that they may be circumvented, and when he is able to shoot or cast he does so; like ذَرِيعَةٌ — see art. ذرع.

According to AZ it is with ء, because the دريئة is driven towards the objects of the chase. But IAth says it is دَرِيَّةٌ, without ء, and that it means an animal by means of which the hunter conceals himself, leaving it to pasture with the wild animals until they have grown used to it and so come within his reach, when he shoots or casts at them.

The plural of دَرِيْئَةٌ is دَرَايَا and دَرَائئُ, with two hemzehs, each of them irregular [with respect to analogy].

Like خِمِّيرٌ and سِكِّيرٌ, or سِكِّينٌ, from دَرَأَ عَلَيْنَا فُلَانٌ and دُرِّىْءٌ; the only instance of the measure فُعِّيلٌ except مُرِّيقٌ [which last word Golius and Freytag mistook for a noun qualified by the adjective درّىء].

A 'Obeyd says that when the first letter is pronounced with damm it is دُرِّىٌّ, without ء, a relative noun from دُرٌّ, of the measure فُعْلِىٌّ [and the like is said in the K, though دُرِّىْءٌ is also mentioned there as correct], because to his knowledge there is no word of the measure فُعِّيلٌ in the language of the Arabs; and that whoever pronounces it [دُرِّىْءٌ] with ء takes it to be [originally of the measure] فُعُّولٌ, like سُبُّوحٌ, one of its vowels being changed to kesr because the word is felt hard to pronounce. Akh also mentions دَرِّىْءٌ, with ء, of the measure فَعِّيلٌ, with fet-h to the first letter, on the authority of Katádeh and AA.

A star that shines, or glistens, intensely; or a star that is driven in its course from the east to the west. According to IAar, [a shooting star;] a star that is driven against the devil [or a devil; for the Arabs believed, and still believe, that a shooting star is one darted at a devil when he tries to overhear the talk of the angels in the lowest heaven]. Some say it means one of the five planets — see art. در.

Plural دَرَارِىْءُ, which Fr says the Arabs apply to the great stars whose names are not known.
