Form 1خَانَهُ5 senses · 1 main
maṣdarخِيَانَةٌ خَوْنٌmuḍāriʿيَخُونُهُ

Core sense — he was unfaithful to him; he broke the covenantgenerated

1.1he was unfaithful to the confidence, or trust, that he reposed in himاختانهُ

maṣdar خِيَانَةٌ, خَوْنٌ, مَخَانَةٌ, خَانَةٌ, and خَائِنَةٌ, of the measure فَاعِلَةٌ, like لَاغِيَةٌ and the like. He was treacherous, perfidious, or unfaithful to him.

Construed with فِى كَذَا [in such a thing].

خِيَانَةٌ is the opposite of أَمَانَةٌ, and does not relate only to property but to other things as well.

El-Harállee: or it is the neglecting, or failing in, أَمَانَةٌ [which is trustiness, or faithfulness].

Er-Rāghib: or it is the same as نِفَاقٌ, except that خيانة regards a compact or covenant or the like, and faithfulness, while نفاق regards religion; so that the former is acting contrary to what is right by breaking a compact or covenant or the like.

But [it is said that] the primary meaning of خَوْنٌ is making to suffer loss, or diminution; because the خَائِن makes the مَخُون suffer loss, or diminution, of something.

[lit. you used to act unfaithfully to yourselves]كُنْتُمْ تَخْتَانُونَ أَنْفُسَكُمْ

In the Qur'ān [2:183] this means you used to act unfaithfully, one to another; or you used to act wrongfully to yourselves.

اِخْتِيَانٌ has a stronger meaning than خِيَانَةٌ.

he broke the compact or covenant or the likeخان العَهْدَ
[The benefit says, I have been disacknowledged, and have not been requited with thankfulness; and the trust says, I have been betrayed, and have not been faithfully kept]تَقُولُ النِّعْمَةُ كُفِرْتُ وَلَمْ أُشْكَرْ وَتَقُولُ الأَمَانَةُ خُنْتُ وَلَمْ أُحْفَظْ

The verb [خُنْتُ] is here of the measure فُعِلْتُ, a verb whose agent is not named.

he was unfaithful to him in respect of the compact or covenant or the like, and the trustخَانَهُ العَهْدَ

Also فِى العَهْدِ and خانهُ الأَمَانَةَ, muḍāriʿ as above, and مَخَانَةٌ.

5.1he sought [to discover, or show,] their treachery, and their slip, lapse, or wrong action, and suspected or accused themتَخَوَّنَهُمْ

خِيَانَة here means treachery, perfidy, or unfaithfulness.

5.1.1such a one took from me by little and little of my right, or dueتَخَوَنَنِى فُلَانٌ حَقِّى

He, or it, diminished it, wasted it, impaired it, or took from it; and so خوّنهُ and خوّن مِنْهُ. Or he diminished it, wasted it, impaired it, or took from it by little and little; the same as تَنَقَّصَهُ.

on this sense Dhu-r-Rummeh says this.

on this sense Lebeed says this, describing a she-camel: that is, whose flesh and fat my alighting and my journeying had diminished by little and little.

[No, but it is, or was, yearning of the soul arising from a place of abode from which sometimes raining clouds, and sometimes a hot wind carrying dust, took away by little and little, so as gradually to efface its traces]

He paid frequent attention to him, or it; or he, or it, returned to him, or it, time after time; the same as تَعَهَّدَهُ, and so خوّنهُ in this sense.

The former verb is [said to be] from تخوّلهُ, by the substitution of ن for ل.

Dhu-r-Rummeh says this, describing a young gazelle.

The caller calls him by the sound of مَآءِ, and he is addressed by the cry termed بُغَام.

That is, except when he hears the بُغَام of his mother calling him by the cry مَآءِ مَآءِ.

It is said, in the article بغم, that the ism mafʿūl مَبْغُوم is used in this instance for the ism fāʿil; but I see no sufficient reason for this.

He says that the young gazelle is slumbering, not raising his eye, or eyes, unless his mother comes to him time after time; or, as some say, unless his mother's call to him takes from his sleep by little and little.

For تَتَخَوَّنُهُ. Or the meaning is: the fever returns at its own time.
