the palm-trees were backward to receive fecundation—خَنَسَتِ النَّخْلُ

[This is said to be figurative; but I do not see why.]

تَأَخَّرَتْ عَنْ قَبُولِ التَّلْقِيحِ literally means they held back from receiving fecundation, so that it had no effect upon them and they bore no fruit that year.

the devil shrinks when he hears the mention of God—يَخْنِسُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِذَا سَمِعَ ذِكْرَ ٱللّٰهِ
he hid himself from among his companions—خَنَسَ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصْحَابِهِ

Also خَنَسَهُ, [and apparently خَنُسَ also,]; but the former is the more common.

And he hid him, or it; or he made him, or it, hide; or he left him, or it, behind and went away from him, or it. Or both verbs mean he contracted, or drew together, him [or it]; or the latter verb has this meaning as well as that of أَخَّرَهُ. The former also means he hid, or concealed, him, or it, as does خَنَسَ بِهِ, mentioned above.

Here أَخَّرْتُ means kept back.

they passed beyond the road, or left it behind them—أَخْنَسُوا الطَّرِيقَ

It is related of Mohammad that he said, “The month is thus and thus,” [twice extending the fingers and thumb of each hand,] and that the third time he contracted one of his fingers, to inform them that the month is twenty-nine [nights with their days].

According to some, having a nose of which the bone is short and the end turns back towards its bone.

Feminine خَنْسَآءُ; plural خُنْسٌ.

خَنَسٌ in its original application belongs to gazelles and to bulls and cows: all bulls and cows are خُنْس, and so are all gazelles. Or خُنُسٌ, with two dammehs, but written by Sh خُنْسٌ, is used to mean gazelles, and bulls or cows.

خَنْسَآءُ is an adjective applied to the wild cow; أَخْنَسُ to the tick, and to the lion; and so is خِنَّوْسٌ, which is applied to the lion in reference to his face and his nose. خنّوس is also applied to a young pig, or in this sense it is with ص. And خَنَاسٌ is synonymous with خِنَّوْسٌ.
