A [garment of the kind called] كِسَآء that is black, square, and has عَلَمَانِ [that is, two ornamental or coloured or figured borders].

Or a black كساء having a border of the kind just described at each end, and made of خَزّ [q. v.], or of wool; if it is not bordered, it is not so called.

Or, according to As, a مُلَآءَة of wool, or of خَزّ, bordered; not unless it is bordered. It is so called because of its softness and thinness, and its small bulk when folded.

Ahmad Ibn-Fáris says that it is the black كِسَآء, and that it may be so called because a man wraps himself in it, so that it is against his أَخْمَص, meaning by this his waist.

Plural خَمَائِصُ.

Made of خَزّ, and having thick أَعْلَام [or borders such as are described above]; worn by people of old.

El-Aashà says: [When she is stripped of her clothing, any day, you would think there was upon her a khameesah, and the glistening redness of gold]

A man whose foot rises from the ground, [or is hollow in the middle of the sole,] so that it does not touch it.

Feminine خَمْصَآءُ; plural خُمْصٌ.

This is a goodly quality; but when the foot is flat, or rises much, it is dispraised. So explained by IAar when Th asked him about 'Alee's saying of Mohammad, [cited, but not explained, in the K,] كَانَ خُمْصَانَ الأَخْمَصَيْنِ.

having the part [of the sole] of the foot that does not touch the ground in treading retiring far from it—خُمْصَانٌ

[When without the article ال it is also written without tenween, according to the best authorities, because the quality of an adjective is original to it and that of a noun accidental.]

The part of the sole of the human foot that is hollow, so that it does not touch the ground; the part of the bottom of the foot that is thin and retires from the ground; or, as some explain it, the خَصْر of the human foot.
