تُخَامِرُهُ is used in the same way, literally: it covers the intellect; or it means: it infects it, [as though acting like leaven; and if so, from خَمَرَ العَجِينَ, which see below; nearly the same as “intoxicates”, which properly means “empoisons”, or “infects with poison”;] synonym تُخَالِطُهُ. [See خَمْرٌ.]

Said to the hyena; a proverb. It is said to be used also as a surname of the hyena, in the manner of تَأَبَّطَ شَرًّا.

hide yourself, O hyena: what you fear has come to you—خَامِرِى حَضَاجِرْ أَتَاكِ مَا تُحَاذِرْ

This is how we have found it, and it is the reading commonly accepted by the authors on proverbs; but properly it should be خَامِرٌ [and أَتَاكَ] or تُحَاذِرينَ.

That is, he put خُمْرَة into the نبيذ.

[Mtr says: I have not found خَمَّرَ العَصِيرَ, nor تخمّر as its quasi-passive.]

So in the tradition of Mo'ádh, of people whose first state was that of free men and neighbours regarded as weak: that is, he has taken them by force and obtained possession of them; whoever made slaves of them in the Time of Ignorance, and then El-Islám came, keeps those he has held in his house or tent, and they shall not pass from his hand.

Mohammad Ibn-Ketheer says: this is a phrase known to us in El-Yemen, where hardly any other is used in its place.

Wine, or grape-wine: what intoxicates, of the expressed juice of grapes; or the juice of grapes when it has effervesced, thrown up froth, been freed of it, and become still; or it applies generally to any intoxicating expressed juice; or, as some say, to anything intoxicating that clouds, or covers, the intellect.

The general application is the more correct, because خَمْر was forbidden when there was no خَمْر of grapes in El-Medeeneh, the drink of its people being made only from dates, green and small, or full-grown but unripe, or fresh and ripe, or dried. Or the arguing of this from that fact alone needs further thought.

AHn says it is sometimes made from grains, but ISd holds this to be an improper meaning.

It is also sometimes applied to the beverage called نَبِيذ, just as نبيذ is sometimes applied to wine pressed from grapes; so in the article نبذ.

Applied to expressed juice from which خَمْر is made, [that is, to must, or unfermented نَبِيذ,] it is figurative; so used in a tradition in which خَمْر is said to have been sold by Samurah, a companion of Mohammad.

خَمْر in its proper sense is so called because it veils the intellect; or because it infects the intellect, as though acting like leaven — so said 'Omar; or because it is left until it has become mature and fermented, or until its odour has changed.

Sgh: the root properly denotes covering, and mixing in a hidden way.

It is of the feminine gender, and sometimes masculine: one says هُوَ الخَمْرُ as well as هِىَ الخَمْرُ, but As does not allow it to be masculine.

خَمْرَةٌ means the same, or a kind of wine; or خَمْرٌ and خَمْرَةٌ are like تَمْرٌ and تَمْرَةٌ, the former a collective generic noun and the latter its ism waḥda; and خَمْرَةٌ means some wine, literally a portion of خَمْر.

The plural of خَمْرٌ is خُمُورٌ.

Here a masculine adjective is used, contrary to rule.

يَـٰصَـٰحِبَىِ ٱلسِّجْنِ أَمَّآ أَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسْقِى رَبَّهُۥ خَمْرًا ۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلْـَٔاخَرُ فَيُصْلَبُ فَتَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّيْرُ مِن رَّأْسِهِۦ ۚ قُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ ٱلَّذِى فِيهِ تَسْتَفْتِيَانِ
