According to IAar, this form alone carries this meaning.

. Said of a woman.

he diedخَلَا مَكَانُهُ

So according to the K; literally, his place became vacant.

IAar: خَلَا alone has this meaning, from the same verb meaning مَضَى, explained below; but if مكانه is added, the verb takes shadda: خَلَّى, for which see below.

the thing was, or became, vacant, or unoccupied, for youخَلَا لَكَ الشَّىْءُ

Both mean the same, that is, فَرَغَ; and hence, the thing was, or became, exclusively for you. For an example of the first verb, see a saying of Ṭarafah under جَوٌّ.

the thing was, or became, vacant, or unoccupied, for youاخلى

AA cites as an example the saying of Maʿn Ibn-Aws: [O censurer, does their share of death come to the tribes in common, or is death exclusively for us alone?]

shāhid
أَعَاذِلُ هَلْ يَأْتِى القَبَائِلَ حَظُّهَامِنَ المَوْتِ أَمْ أَخْلَى لَنا المَوْتُ وَحْدَنَا

See also the entry below beginning with خَلَا, on this word as a marker of exception.

1.1.1he was, or became, alone, by himselfخَلَا

The same two verbs followed by بِنَفْسِهِ, said of a man, mean the same; or he became وَقَعَ in a vacant place, where he was not pressed against or straitened.

he was, or became, alone, by himselfاخلى
he was, or became, alone with him, in a place unoccupied by othersخَلَا بِهِ

Maṣdar خَلْوَةٌ, خَلَآءٌ, and خَلْوٌ or خُلُوٌّ; or the first of these, خَلْوَةٌ, is a simple noun, and the second and third are the maṣdars.

he was, or became, alone with him, in a place unoccupied by othersإِلَيْهِ
he was, or became, alone with him, in a place unoccupied by othersمَعَهُ
he met him, or had a meeting with him, in a private placeاخلى به

he met him, or had a meeting with him, in a private placeاستخلى بِهِ
and when they are alone with their devilsوَإِذَا خَلَوْا إِلَى شَيَاطِينِهِمْ

In the Qur'ān 2:13; إِلَى is here said to be used in the sense of مَعَ, as in another saying in the Qur'ān, 3:45 and 61:14, مَنْ أَنْصَارِى إِلَى ٱللّٰهُ.

be alone with meاُخْلُ مَعِى حَتَّى أُكَلِّمَكَ
he was, or became, alone with his wifeخَلَا بِزَوْجَتِهِ

A man says this to another so that he may speak to him in private.

though see what is said of this noun above.

In legal usage the term خَلْوَةٌ (or خَلْوَةٌ صَحِيحَةٌ in this case) is not used unless there is the enjoyment of المُفَاخَذَة (see form 3 in art. فخذ), and then it has an effect on the circumstances of the marriage, making the dowry payable although consummation has not taken place; if with consummation, the act is termed دُخُولٌ.

be alone in your affair, with no one sharing it with youأَخْلِ أَمْرَكَ
be alone in your affair; keep to it and to nothing elseبِأَمْرِكَ
keep to your affair, and be alone in it, with no one sharing itأَخْلِ إِلَيْكَ
he was, or became, alone in weeping, with no one joining him in itاستخلى البُكَآءُ

Apparently for بِالبُكَآءِ.

For خَلَا لِلْأَمْرِ see form 5.

he restricted himself to a portion of the foodخَلَاعَلَى بَعْضِ الطَّعَامِ
such a one fed upon milk and flesh-meat alone; he ate and mixed nothing else with themخَلَا فُلَانٌ عَلَى اللَّبَنِ وَ اللَّحْمِ

So the tribe of Temeem say; Kināneh and Keys say أَخْلَى.

It seems to be indicated in the T that خَلَوْا means: they selected a she-camel for a خَلِيَّة; or that it is the same as تَخَلَّوْا بِخَلَيِّةٍ, for which see form 5.

1.1.2he devoted himself to religious services or exercisesخَلَا

Apparently in solitude or seclusion, or in a خَلْوَة; or because one generally does so in solitude; or because doing so involves being drawn away from other affairs.

See also form 5, and مُسْتَخْلٍ.

1.1.3figurative · مجازhe mocked at, scoffed at, laughed at, or ridiculed himخَلَا بِهِ

Az says this is strange, and known to him on no authority but that of Lh. It comes from the saying خَلَا فُلَانٌ بِعِرْضِ فُلَانٍ يَعْبَثُ بِهِ, meaning: such a one occupied himself alone with the honour, or reputation, of such a one, making sport with it.

It also means the same as خَادَعَهُ: he deceived, deluded, beguiled, or outwitted him, or he strove to do so; and so does خالاهُ, mentioned in the K in art. خلى.

1.1.4he relied upon himخَلَا عَلَيْهِ

As though he went to him alone; the same as اِعْتَمَدَ.

1.1.5he, or it, went, went away, or passed awayخَلَا

Maṣdar خُلُوٌّ or خَلَآءٌ. Said of a man and of a thing.

and there is no people but a warner has gone, and has been sent, among themوَ إِنْ مِنْ أُمَّةٍإِلَّا خَلَا فِيهَا نَذِيرٌ

In the Qur'ān 35:22.

Hence also خَلَا, explained above as meaning he died.

she became old; the greater part of her life had passedخَلَا مِنْهَا
blame passed away from you; or may blame pass away from youخَلَاكَ ذَمٌّ

A phrase with a word left out.

For خَلَا عَنْكَ ذَمٌّ.

1.1.6

For خَلَا عَنِ الشَّىْءِ see form 2.

1.2he ate what was good, sweet, or pleasantخَلَا

Or خَلَى; it probably belongs to art. خلى, though mentioned in the present article.

(TA. [See also 5; and see مُسْتَخْلٍ .]) And خَلَا بِهِ [sometimes] signifies He mocked at, scoffed at, laughed at, derided, or ridiculed, him: (Lh, S, Z, K, TA:) said by Az to be strange, and not known by him or any other authority than that of Lh: (TA:) from the saying, خَلَا فُلَانٌ بِعِرْضِ فُلَانٍ يَعْبَثُ بِهِ [Such a one occupied himself alone with the honour, or reputation, of such a one, making sport with it]. (Ksh in ii. 13.) And i. q. خَادَعَهُ [He deceived, deluded, beguiled, circumvented, or outwitted, him; &c.: or he strove to do so]: (TA:) as also خالاهُ , (JK, and K in art. خلى ,) inf. n. مُخَالَاةٌ . (JK.) And خَلَا , (JK, K,) inf. n. خُلُوٌّ , (TA,) or خَلَآءٌ , (JK,) said of a man (JK) and of a thing, (JK, TA,) He, or it, went, went away, or passed away. (JK, K.) Hence, (TA,) وَ إِنْ مِنْ أُمَّةٍإِلَّا خَلَا فِيهَا نَذِيرٌ , in the Kur [xxxv. 22], means [And there is not any people but a warner] hath gone, and hath been sent, among them. (S, TA.) [Hence also خَلَا explained above as meaning He died.] And خَلَا مِنْهَا [an elliptical phrase] She became old; the greater part of her life passed. (TA from a trad.) And خَلَاكَ ذَمٌّ [for خَلَا عَنْكَ ذَمٌّ ] Blame passed away from thee; or may blame pass away from thee. (Ksh and Bd in ii. 13.) You say, اِفْعَلْ كَذَا وَ خَلَاكَ ذَمٌّ Do thou such a thing, and thou wilt have an excuse; [i. e.] blame will fall from thee. (S. [See art. ذم .]) And خَلَاهُ الحُزْنُ Grief passed away from him, and quitted him. (Har p. 590, from the Tekmileh.) خَلَا عَنِ الشَّىْءِ : see 2. خَلَا [or خَلَى , probably belonging to art. خلى , though mentioned in the present art.,] He ate what was good, sweet, or pleasant. 2.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe left his place vacant, meaning he diedخلّى مَكَانَهُ

he left a place and the like empty, vacant, or unoccupied.

The K assigns this meaning to خَلَا مَكَانُهُ, and IAar to خَلَا alone, without shadda; but when مكانه is added, the verb has shadda.

he left his way free, or open, to himخلّى سَبِيلَهُ
he left the way, or space, free between them twoخلّى بَيْنَهُمَا
he left him free access to such a thingخلّى بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ كَذَا
he left him, or it, aloneخلّى بَيْنَهُ وَ بَيْنَ نَفْسِهِ

It also means: he went his way.

That is, he left them two free, each to do to the other as he pleased.

The same as أَهْمَلَهُ; mentioned in art. همل.

he left him to do as he pleased with such a oneخلّاهُ وَفُلَانًا
he left, or let alone, the thing, or affairخلّى الأَمْرَ

Also تخلّى مِنْهُ, عَنْهُ, and خالاهُ.

For تَخْلِيَةٌ means the leaving of a thing, and the making of it to be alone.

خلّاهُ and خلّى عَنْهُ both mean: he left, or left alone, it, or him.

he left them alone, and turned from them, for forty yearsخلّى عَنْهُمْ أَرْبَعِينَ عَامًا

Said of God; the phrase occurs in a tradition.

he made him, or left him, vacant, unoccupied, or at leisure for such a thingخلّاهُ لِكَذَا
2.1.1he dismissed, loosed, let loose, or let go, the thingخلّى عَنِ الشَّىْءِ

تَخْلِيَةٌ also means loosing, the opposite of شَدٌّ; so IAar, and the K in art. ابض.

In the K written خَلَا, without shadda, but this requires consideration.

2.1.2he left it, permitted it, or allowed itخلّاهُ

And hence this usage; see the ism mafʿūl, below.

2.2

خُلِّيَتْ is said of a she-camel of the kind termed خَلِيَّة, and hence of a cooking-pot: see form 1 in art. خلى.

Nounخَلَا1 sense

Core sense — except, apart from, withoutgenerated

1they came to me, except Zeydجَاؤُونِى خَلَا زَيْدٍ

As a word marking exception. When it governs the genitive, it is a particle, according to some of the grammarians, like حَاشَى; but according to others it is a prefixed maṣdar.

they came to me, except Zeydجَاؤُونِى خَلَا زَيْدًا

It also governs the accusative, as a verb; the agent of خلا is implied, like that of حَاشَى used as a verb. It is as though you said خَلَا مَنْ جَآءَنِى مِنْ زَيْدٍ, that is, those who came to me were without Zeyd; or correctly, according to IB, خَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ زَيْدًا, for مِنْ زَيْدٍ, just as you say خَلَاكَ ذَمٌّ for خَلَا عَنْكَ ذَمٌّ.

they came to me, except Zeydجَاؤُونِى مَا خَلَا زَيْدًا

When you say مَا خَلَا, only the accusative follows, because ما خلا is equivalent to a maṣdar.

So it is as if you said جَاؤُونِى خُلُوَّ زَيْدٍ, or خُلُوًّا زَيْدًا, that is, خُلُوَّهُمْ مِنْ زَيْدٍ; and these two phrases mean جَاؤُونِى خَالِينَ مِنْ زَيْدٍ, they came to me, they being without Zeyd.

Seer: ماخلا stands in the place of a noun in the accusative as a ḥāl; but some say as an adverbial noun of time, so that on their view مَا خَلَا زَيْدًا means وَقْتَ خُلُوِّهِمْ عَنْ زَيْدٍ, in the time of their being without Zeyd.

I did not desire to displease you, but I admonished youمَا أَرَدْتُ مَسَآءَتَكَ خَلَا أَنِّى وَعَظْتُكَ

The verb used here is إِلَّا أَنِّى وَعَظْتُكَ.

Primarily a maṣdar; see the first sentence of form 1.

Then it is used as a noun in the sense of a vacant place, in a general sense, or a place in which there is nothing; it is often applied in the present day to any open tract of country or desert. Then, particularly, such a place as one takes for the purpose of satisfying a want of nature, the same as مُتَوَضَّأٌ, though it does not mean only a place for the performance of الوُضُوء, as this explanation might suggest. Plural أَخْلِيَةٌ.

A proverb; in Freytag's Arabic Proverbs, 1.436, written بِحَيَآيِكَ. The word for 'most preservative' is أَلْزَمُ. The meaning is that it is most fitting for you to be alone in your abode, since one who is alone need not be careful of his sense of shame, or modesty; it is used in blaming the mixing with others.

If the first reading is right, the meaning may be like that of سَهْلُ الخَلْوَةِ mentioned above; if only the latter, or rather انّه لحلو الخَلَى, is right, it probably belongs to art. خلىٍ and is figurative, from the herbage termed خَلى; and this may also be the case if the first reading is right.

Core sense — free, unoccupied; divorced, said of a woman; a she-camel milked alonegenerated

1

This word and its feminine خَلِيَّةٌ: see خَالٍ in twelve places.

1.1you are divorcedأَنْتِ خَلِيَّةٌ
she is divorcedهِىَ خَلِيَّةٌ

The feminine, applied to a she-camel: loosed from the cord, or rope, with which her fore shank and her arm have been bound together, and left alone, or free, so that she pastures where she will. Hence it is used by way of metonymy of a woman, meaning divorced.

Said to a woman; a man used to say this in the Time of Ignorance.

A woman is divorced by this word when divorce is meant.

Applied to a woman, it also means free from any obstacle to marriage; plural خَلِيَّاتٌ.

1.2

Also a she-camel that is made to affect, along with another she-camel, one young one, so that both yield their milk to it, and to which the people of a tent, or house, confine themselves, apart from the other, for the purpose of milking her.

Or a she-camel chosen as the one more abundant in milk: when one has brought forth, her young one is drawn away as soon as it is born, before she smells it, and the young one of another that has brought forth before her is brought near to her, and she takes to it; the other is left to suckle the young one, and is termed بَسُوطٌ. Plural بسط, apparently بُسْطٌ or بُسُطٌ.

Or a she-camel that is left, or left alone, to be milked; or that takes to a young one not her own, or is destitute of her own young one, whether she inclines to another's young one or not; or that is destitute of her young one by death or slaughter, and whose milk one causes to flow by means of another's young one, but only by her taking to a young one and not suckling it.

Or one that brings forth when abundant in milk, and has her young one drawn from beneath her and another put beneath her, and is then left alone to be milked; this is done because of her generous quality.

Or a she-camel, or two she-camels, to which the people of a tent, or house, confine themselves for milking, when two or three she-camels are made to take to one young one and to yield their milk to it, the young one afterwards sucking from one of them only.

Or one that brings forth and whose young one is drawn away so that her milk may continue for their use, she being made to yield her milk by means of another's young one, which is then withdrawn from her, and she is milked.

Sometimes, too, they bring together three or four خَلَايَا (plural of خَلِيَّةٌ) to one young camel; the doing of this is termed تَلَسُّنٌ, and in this case they take as a خليّة whichever of them they will.

Applied to a she-camel in any of these senses, it seems to be an adjective in which the quality of a noun is predominant, that is, used without نَاقَةٌ prefixed to it.

Vacant, or free, from a thing or an affair; or devoid, or destitute, of a thing; and so خَلِىٌّ and خِلْوٌ, the last being the same as masculine and feminine, though it has خِلْوَةٌ also for a feminine and أَخْلَآءٌ for a plural; but properly, according to Lh, it has no dual, plural, or feminine, though some give it such forms; or خَلِىٌّ, which has a dual, خَلِيَّانِ, and a plural, خَلِيُّونَ.

أَخْلِيَآءُ means free from a thing, or clear, or quit, of a thing or person; and so does خَلَآءُ, which, being originally a maṣdar, has no dual and no plural; and so does خِلْوٌ.

you are free from this thing, or affairخَالٍ

I am clear, or quit, of this affairأَنَا مِنْ هٰذَا الأَمْرِ كَفَالِجِ بْنِ خَلَاوَةَ

Literally, I am, with respect to this affair, like Fālij Ibn-Khalāweh. Or فَالِجُ بْنُ خَلَاوَةَ, as in the JK and K in this article, and in the S and K in art. فلج; the meaning is بَرِىْءٌ. The saying arose from Fālij Ibn-Khalāweh being asked, on the day of Er-Rakam, when Uneys killed the captives, 'Will you aid Uneys?' and answering, 'I am clear, or quit, of him.'

free from anxietyخَلِىٌّ

That is, خَالٍ مِنَ الهَمِّ; the opposite of شَجِىٌّ.

woe to the man burdened with anxiety from the man who is free of itلِلشَّجِىِّ مِنَ الخَلِىِّ وَيْلٌ
what will the man burdened with anxiety get from the man who is free of it?مِنَ الخَلِىِّ مَا يَلْقَى الشَّجِىُّ

AO: meaning that the man free of anxiety will not aid the anxious man against his anxieties, but will blame him. The Tekmileh says that الخَلِىّ in these proverbs is from خَلَاهُ الحُزْنُ, meaning grief passed away from him and left him.

Also a man having no wife, from the phrase خَالٍ مِنَ الزَّوَجَاتِ occurring in the TA; and a woman having no husband, in this sense without ة; plural أَخْلَآءٌ.

خِلْوَةٌ also has the latter meaning; dual خِلْوَتَانِ, plural خِلْوَاتٌ; and so does مُخْلِيَةٌ. And خَلِيَّةٌ means a woman having no husband and no children; plural خَلِيَّاتٌ.

1.3the wolf, when alone or in a vacant place, is most courageous, or violentالذِّئْبُ مُخْلِيًا أَشَدُّ

Also alone; as also مُخْلٍ and خِلْوٌ.

A proverb; or خَالِيًا, which means the same; another reading is أَسَدٌ. See Freytag's Arabic Proverbs, 1.500.

I found such a woman aloneوَجَدْتُ فُلَانَةَ مُخْلِيَةً

That is, خَالِيَةً.
