muḍāriʿـُيَفْعُلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarخَلْقٌ خَلَاقَةٌ خَلَقٌ خُلُوقَةٌ

Core sense — he measured or proportioned it; he created it; it became old and worn outgenerated

1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe measured, or proportioned, the hide, and sewed itخَلَقَ الأَدِيمِ

The primary meaning is the act of measuring, or determining the measure or proportion of a thing; making a thing by measure, or according to the measure of another thing; or proportioning one thing to another; synonymous with تَقْدِيرٌ.

maṣdar خَلْقٌ and خَلْقَةٌ.

Here the measuring is قَدَّرَ; or قدّر: he measured the hide, لِمَا يُرِيدُ [for what he desired to make of it], or لِلسِّقَآءِ [for the skin for water or milk that he desired to make], before cutting it; he measured it to cut from it a water-bag, a water-skin, or a boot.

In the same way خَلَقَ النِّطَعَ: he measured the نطع [q. v.]; when one cuts it, one says فَرَاهُ.

he determined the measure of the sandal, or proportioned it, and made it by measureخَلَقَ النَّعْلَ

Also expressed by قَدَّرَهَا.

Hence the saying of Zuheyr, praising Herim Ibn-Sinán:

shāhid
وَلَأَنْتَ تَفْرِى مَا خَلَقْتَ وَبَعْضُ القَوْمِ يَخْلُقُ ثُمَّ لَا يَفْرِى

[And you indeed cut what you have measured; but some of the people measure, then will not cut] — that is, when you decide on a thing you carry it out, while others decide on what they do not carry out. In this quotation the final character of the first line and the initial character of the second are missing in the original text.

El-Hajjáj said, مَا خَلَقْتُ إِلَّا قَرَيْتُ وَعَدْتُ إِلَّا وَفَيْتُ [I have not measured unless I have afterwards cut, and I have not promised unless I have afterwards performed].

I will form for you, or make according to its proper measure, for youأَخْلُقُ لَكُمْ مِنَ الطِّينِ كَهَيْئَةِ الطَّيْرِ

In the Kur 3. 43; that is, أُقَدِّرُ for you, and I will form, of clay, a thing like the form of the bird, or of birds.

"And (appoint him) a messenger to the Children of Israel, (with this message): "'I have come to you, with a Sign from your Lord, in that I make for you out of clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by Allah's leave: And I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken the dead, by Allah's leave; and I declare to you what ye eat, and what ye store in your houses. Surely therein is a Sign for you if ye did believe;Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)

1.1.1figurative · مجازGod brought the thing into existence after it had not beenخَلَقَ ٱللّٰهُ الشَّىْءَ

Hence also: the bringing a thing into existence according to a certain measure or proportion, so as to make it equal to another thing, or uniform with it; or the originating or producing a thing after a pattern or model one has devised, and not after the likeness of anything already existing — another meaning it has in the classical language of the Arabs. As the act of God it means originating, or bringing into being, anything not after the likeness of anything already existing; and creating a thing, which is generally the best rendering, as meaning the bringing into existence from a state of non-existence.

.

Or خَلْقٌ, as the act of God, means the creating out of nothing.

serve your Lord, who brought you into existence when you were nothingأُعْبُدُوا رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ

But in other passages of the Kur (6. 2 and elsewhere) it is said that God created mankind of clay.

God brought the creation, or created beings, or mankind, into existence according to a predetermination required by wisdomخَلَقَ ٱللّٰهُ الخَلْقَ

According to the A, this is a figurative phrase; the predetermination is تَقْدِير.

One says هٰذِهِ خَلِيقَتُهُ الَّتِى خُلِقَ عَلَيْهَا, خُلِقَهَا, and الَّتِى خُلِقَ: see خُلُقٌ.

Core sense — old, and worn out; an old, worn-out garment; smoothnessgenerated

1

maṣdar of خَلِقَ in that sense, meaning the being smooth.

In a rock, freedom from crack or fracture.

1.1

As a maṣdar also: the being old, and worn out.

1.2an old and worn-out garment, or piece of clothثَوْبٌ خَلَقٌ

Used as an adjective: old, and worn out; and as an adjective in which the quality of a noun predominates, meaning an old and worn-out garment or piece of cloth. Plural خُلْقَانٌ and أَخْلَاقٌ.

As an adjective it is both masculine and feminine, because it is originally a maṣdar — the maṣdar of أَخْلَقُ meaning “smooth”, or rather of خَلِقَ meaning “it was, or became, old and worn out” — although it has plurals; and IB mentions an instance of its dual, خَلَقَانِ.

Ks says that they have not been heard to say خَلَقَةٌ in any instance. Fr says that it is without ة as a feminine adjective because it was originally used as a prefixed noun, for one said أَعْطِنِى خَلَقَ جُبَّتِكَ and خَلَقَ عِمَامَتِكَ [give me what is old and worn out of your جبّة and of your turban]; but Ez-Zejjájee says that this is worthless.

an old and worn-out piece of ropeرُمَّةٌ خَلَقٌ
an old and decayed houseدَارٌ خَلَقٌ
an old and wasted bodyجِسْمٌ خَلَقٌ
a garment, or piece of cloth, wholly old and worn outثَوْبٌ أَخْلَاقٌ

Every portion of it being خَلَق, as they said بُرْمَةٌ أَعْشَارٌ and the like; and in the same way مُلَآءَةٌ أَخْلَاقٌ.

their garments became old and worn out, and their worn-out garments were replaced by newأَصْبَحَتْ ثِيَابُهُمْ خُلْقَانًا وَ خَلَقُهُمْ جُدُدًا

Mentioned by Ks, with the singular in the latter clause in place of the plural خُلْقَان; or جُدُدًا may here be put for جَدِيدًا. See art. جد.

an outer wrapping garment that is somewhat old and worn outمِلْحَفَةٌ خُلَيْقٌ

The diminutive is without ة because it is the diminutive of an adjective applied without ة to a feminine noun, and ة is not affixed to the diminutives of such adjectives; it is like نُصَيُفٌ, the diminutive of نَصَفٌ, an adjective applied to a woman. Some of the grammarians consider these instances irregular.

1.3he bought it, or sold it, as cheaply as one buys an old and worn-out garmentبَاعَهُ بِيعَةَ الخَلَقِ

Also بَيْعَ ذِى الخَلَقِ, as used by a poet; we say “dog-cheap” or “cheap as dirt”. Both phrases are mentioned, but not explained, by IAar, who cites:

shāhid
أَبْلِغْ فَزَارَةَ أَنِّى قَدْ شَرَيْتُ لَهَامَجْدَ الحَيَاةِ بِسَيْفِى بَيْعَ ذِى الخَلَقِ

[apparently meaning: Tell Fezárah that I have bought for them the glory of life with my sword, as cheaply, that is as easily, as one buys an old and worn-out garment].

Core sense — a nature, a natural disposition; moral character; custom, habitgenerated

1nothing is heavier in the balance than goodness of the moral characterلَيْسَ شَىْءٌ فِى المِيزَانِ أَثْقَلَ مِنْ حُسْنِ الخُلُقِ

Also خُلْقٌ: a nature; a natural, native, or innate disposition or temper; synonymous with سَجِيَّةٌ and طَبْعٌ, of which one is created. خِلْقَةٌ means the same, i. e. the فِطْرَةٌ of which a man is created, like [خُلُقٌ and] خُلْقٌ; in the CK, wrongly, خَلْق. خَلِيقَةٌ likewise means the طَبِيعَة with which a man is created.

The proper meaning of خُلُقٌ is the moral character, the fashion of the inner man — his mind, or soul, and its qualities and attributes — just as خَلْقٌ means the fashion of the outer man and its qualities and attributes. It also means custom or habit, as being a second nature; and, like خُلْقٌ, which is merely a contraction of it and identical with it in all its senses, manliness, synonymous with مُرُوْءَةٌ, and religion.

The plural is أَخْلَاقٌ only; it is often used for morals, and for ethics. The plural of خَلِيقَةٌ in the sense explained above [said in Har p. 193 to be that of خُلُقٌ] is خَلَائِقٌ.

Nounخَلِيقٌ4 senses · 1 main

Core sense — perfect, or complete, in make; adapted or disposed by nature, fit, worthygenerated

1anything just in proportionمُخْتَلَقٌ

Applied to a man: perfect, or complete, in make; as also مُخْتَلَقٌ, which also means perfect in make and just in proportion; in the CK, wrongly, مُخْتَلِق, though the TA says expressly that it is of the passive form. The feminine is formed with ة. Or both mean goodly, or beautiful, in make; or the first is not applied to a man, but each, with ة, means a woman having a goodly body and make (the TA calls this a figurative use).

According to Lh, خَلِيقٌ and خَلِيقَةٌ are alike in this last sense; or the first of them may be the plural, or collective noun, of the other, as شَعِيرٌ is of شَعِيرَةٌ.

perfect, or complete, in makeمُخَلَّقٌ

Applied to a camel; or جمل here may be a mistranscription for حَمْل, since مُضْغَةٌ مُخَلَّقَةٌ means a fœtus, when it has become like a lump of flesh, perfect or complete in make — so in the Kur 22. 5 — or of which the make has become apparent.

Qur’ān 22:5 approximate — somewhere between 22:2 and 22:11 Lane cites “Kur xxii. 5”
Qur’ān 22:5 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
