muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُmaṣdarخَلْعٌ خُلْعٌ مُخَالَعَةٌ خَلَاعَةٌ
Core sense — he pulled it off; he deposed him; he divorced his wife for a ransomgenerated
1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe pulled his garment off his body—عَنْ بَدَنِهِ
. He pulled it off — synonym نَزَعَهُ — or stripped it off, or took it off, or threw it off from himself.
he pulled his sandal off his foot—عَنْ رِجْلِهِ
اختلعهُ is used in the same way, as appears from the statement that اِخْتِلَاعٌ is synonymous with خَلْعٌ; and according to some خَلْعٌ is synonymous with نَزْعٌ. But according to Lth the first is like the second, except that the first is a somewhat leisurely action.
[And pull off, or take off, your sandals]—فَٱخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَ
In the Qur'ān 20:12 this is said to be used in its proper sense, because his sandals were of the skin of a dead ass. Or, as the Ṣūfīs say, it is a command to stay, as you say to someone you want to stay, "Pull off your garment and your boots," and the like; and this is figurative. Or, according to some, empty your heart of [care for] family and property.
1.1.1[He took off from himself, and bestowed upon him, a garment]—خَلَعَ عَلَيْهِ
he bestowed a garment on him, he gave him a garment—خَلَعَ عَلَيْهِ خِلْعَةٍ
Generally meaning a robe of honour. The sense of giving comes from the connective على, not from the verb by itself.
1.1.2figurative · مجازGod will surely invest you with the apparel of the office of Khaleefeh—إِنَّ ٱللّٰهَ سَيُقَمِّصُكَ قَمِيصًا وَ إِنَّكَ تُلَاصُ عَلَى خَلْعِهِ
Said in a tradition about 'Othmán; it continues: and you will be urged with enticement, and solicited, to divest yourself of it.
1.1.3figurative · مجاز — inferredthe horse threw off his head-stall, or halter, and wandered about at random—خَلَعَ الفَرَسُ عِذَارَهُ
1.1.4figurative · مجازhe threw off restraint and acted wrongfully and badly towards others, with none to check him—خَلَعَ عِذَارَهُ
Said of a man; from عذار, meaning restraint.
1.1.5he removed its اوصال—خَلَعَ أَوْصَالَهُ
Meaning the bones so called, as the context shows.
1.1.6figurative · مجاز[He took away the property of his companion]—خَلَعَ مَالَ صَاحِبِهِ
Said of a person gambling with another.
1.1.7figurative · مجاز — inferred[It drew away the heart of the beholder towards it]—خَلَعَ قَلْبَ النَّاظِرِ إِلَيْهِ
Aboo-Sa'eed: said of the best of property.
1.1.8figurative · مجازhe took off his shackles, he released him from his shackles—خَلَعَ قَيْدَهُ
he released his beast from its shackles—خَلَعَ دَابَّتَهُ
خلّعهَا has the same meaning.
1.1.9figurative · مجازhe annulled his compact, or covenant—خَلَعَ الرِّبْقَةَ عَنْ عُنُقِهِ
1.1.10figurative · مجازhe threw off his allegiance, forsook obedience to his Sultán, and acted wrongfully and badly towards him—خَلَعَ يَدًا مِنْ طَاعَةٍ
Obedience is likened to a garment that a man puts off, or throws off, from himself.
1.1.11the corpse shall have its grave-clothes pulled off from it—يُخْلَعُ المَيِّتُ
This stands for يُخْلَعُ الكَفَنُ عَنِ المَيِّتِ, as خَلَعَ الدَّابَّةَ (mentioned above) stands for خَلَعَ قَيْدَ الدَّابَّةِ.
1.1.12figurative · مجاز — inferredI removed the ruler, or governor, from his office; I deposed him—خَلَعْتُ الوَالِى عَنْ عَمَلِهِ
the ruler, or governor, was divested of his authority, removed from his office, or deposed—خُلِعَ الوَالِى
the agent, or the exactor of the poor-rates, was removed from his office—العَامِلُ
the Khaleefeh was removed from his office, or deposed—الخَلِيفَةُ
he divested his leader of his authority, removed him from his office, or dismissed him—خَلَعَ قَائِدَهُ
IF says this is scarcely, or never, said except of an inferior who forsakes his superior; so خَلَعَهُ means, in such a case, he threw off his allegiance to him, or forsook obedience to him, like the other phrase mentioned above. One does not say, or seldom says, خَلَعَ الأَمِيرُ وَالِيَهُ عَلَى بَلَدِ كَذَا, meaning the prince deposed his ruler over such a province or the like, but rather عَزَلَهُ.
1.1.13figurative · مجازhe divorced his wife for a ransom, or a compensation, given by her—خَلَعَ ٱمْرَأَتَهُ
with damm — or this is a simple noun and the maṣdar is خَلْعٌ; some add خِلَاعٌ.
he divorced his wife for a ransom, or a compensation, given by her—خالعها
and خِلَاعٌ seems to be another maṣdar of this second verb rather than of the first.
The ransom may be her property given to release herself from him, or a gift or compensation from her, or from another. (K, according to different copies; some having بِبَذْلٍ, others بِبَبَدَلٍ.) This is because the wife is like a garment to the husband, and the husband to the wife, as is said in the Qur'ān 2:183.
It is also said that تَخَالُعٌ is synonymous with خُلْعٌ; but see form 6.
divorce her and leave her—اِخْلَعْهَا
This occurs in a tradition.
Qur’ān 2:187 matched to Lane’s own quotation of it Lane cites “Kur ii. 183”
1.1.14figurative · مجازhis family cast him off, repudiated him, or renounced him—خَلَعَهُ أَهْلُهُ
O men, this, my son — I cast him off and declare myself clear of him—يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ هٰذَا ٱبْنَى قَدْ خَلَعْتُهُ
[We do indeed cast off, or renounce, such a one]—إِنَّا قَدْ خَلَعْنَا فُلَانًا
they cast him off, repudiated him, or declared themselves clear of him—خَلَعُوهُ
So that if he committed a crime, or an offence making him liable to punishment, they should not be prosecuted for it.
In the Time of Ignorance a man would proclaim this in the fair, or festival: so that if his son committed a crime, or an offence making him liable to punishment, the father was not responsible; and if such an offence was committed against the son, the father would not pursue it for redress or retaliation. After that the son was not punished for any such act of his. This was done when the man feared some foul action or treachery from his son.
. Said of a confederate: so that they should not be punished for a crime, or an offence making them liable to punishment, committed by him, nor he for such an act committed by them.
we repudiate, and declare ourselves clear of, and forsake, whoever disobeys or opposes You—نَخْلَعُ وَنَتْرُكُ مَنْ يَفْجُرُكَ
Or نَخْلَعُ وَنَهْجُرُ مَنْ يَكْفُرُكَ: we hate, and repudiate, and declare ourselves clear of, and forsake, whoever denies Your favour, or is ungrateful for it.
1.2figurative · مجازhe became cast off, repudiated, or renounced, by his family—خَلُعَ
.
Explained as صَارَ خَلِيعًا, that is, خَلَعَهُ أَهْلُهُ; so that if he committed a crime, or an offence making him liable to punishment, they were not prosecuted for it.
He became alienated or estranged from his family; synonym تَبَاعَدَ: he became vicious, or immoral, notorious for drinking and play, a gambler, or the like. See خَلَاعَةٌ below, and see خَلِيعٌ.
1.3he became affected with what is termed خَالِعٌ—خُلِعَ
That is, a twisting of the عُرْقُوبٌ [or hock-tendon].

(IAth, TA.) يُخْلَعُ المَيِّتُ [for يُخْلَعُ الكَفَنُ عَنِ المَيِّتِ , like خَلَعَ الدَّابَّةَ (mentioned above) for خَلَعَ قَيْدَ الدَّابَّةِ ,] The corpse shall have its grave-clothes pulled off from it. (Mgh.) [In like manner you say,] خَلَعْتُ الوَالِى عَنْ عَمَلِهِ I removed the ruler, or governor, or the like, from his office; or deposed him. (Msb.) (TA.) خَلَعَ ٱمْرَأَتَهُ , (Az, S, Mgh, Msb,) inf. n. خُلْعٌ , with damm, (S, K, *) or this is a simple subst., (Az, Mgh, Msb,) and the inf. n. is خَلْعٌ , (Az, Msb, TA,) and some add خِلَاعٌ ; (TA;) and خالعها , (Az, TA,) inf. n. مُخَالَعَةٌ ; (K;) [and خِلَاعٌ seems to be another inf. n. of this latter verb, rather than of the former;] He divorced his wife (Az, Mgh, Msb, K) for a ransom given by her, (Msb,) or for her property given by her as a ransom to release herself from him, (Az, Mgh, TA,) or for a gift, or a compensation, from her, (K, accord. to different copies; some having بِبَذْلٍ ; and others, بِبَبَدَلٍ ;) or from another: (K:) because the wife is [as] a garment to the husband, and the husband to the wife, (Az, Mgh, Msb, TA,) as is said in the Kur ii. 183: (Az, TA:) [it is also said that] تَخَالُعٌ is syn. with خُلْعٌ : (K:) [but see 6, below:] and اِخْلَعْهَا , occurring in a trad., is explained as signifying Divorce thou her, and quit her. In the same sense the verb is used in the saying, نَخْلَعُ وَنَتْرُكُ مَنْ يَفْجُرُكَ [We repudiate, or renounce, or] we declare ourselves clear of, and forsake, him who disobeys, or opposes, Thee: (Mgh, TA:) or نَخْلَعُ وَنَهْجُرُ مَنْ يَكْفُرُكَ we hate, and [repudiate, or renounce, or] declare ourselves clear of, [and forsake,] him who denies, or disacknowledges, thy favour, or who is ungrateful, or unthankful, for it.
